This is the second time in a few days I'm making a thread about a young player rumoured to go to Arsenal on the cheap. I can't believe they have no competition for Tierney and likely to buy him for a measly 25m.

Yes, we have Shaw, but we also have Dalot and that's not stopping us from breaking a world record for a full back purchase for another youngster. Why can't we go into these sensible deals like a top prospect for 25m?

If they buy Saliba and Tierney for 50-60m then they are playing a blinder in the market. I hope we take note of what is actually possible.

And yes, we can have two top left backs. It's good to have competition last I checked.

Has anybody actually seen him play or does the caf just love him because he's great on FM?

Yeah from what I read on here, he is highly rated. I don’t watch enough of him or Celtic to have an opinion, though it also seems some of us actively look for things to find to have a go at the club. There’s no guarantee he’d be a success and left back is possibly one of the last positions we need to strengthen - considering the needs of other positions and the prices being quoted (vs budget).

Now he could obviously be such a talent that if he were to become available, you’d sign him no matter what other priorities you have, but with Arsenal seemingly the only club interested at the moment, he probably isn’t.

Mind you, like I said, I haven’t watched enough of him to know anything & if we had a stable, performing team, it would seemingly be a good signing to keep competition strong and freshen up, but we don’t have a stable or performing team.

I've only seen highlights, looks ok though hard to tell given nature of Scottish League (no offence Scotland) and lack of competition for Celtic. Would be interested to hear from someone with a better idea... @Gio ?

PS. I wouldn't say Shaw impresses me that much. Ok, nothing to write home about and whether Tierney or someone else, would welcome competition (and squad depth).

Shaw is a nailed on first team player, Dalot is far from a starter, so the situations in the right and left are different. Right back needs to be a priority.

Having said that we need someone else to push Shaw and give him competition. The only players to play left back last season aside from Shaw were Young, Rojo, Darmian and Dalot - all poor options and hopefully Rojo and Darmian will be gone this summer.

I imagine when Tierney wants to step up and go to the PL he would want to be a first choice player - I’m not sure we would want to come to Utd for that reason.

Given the no of other issues we have got, we can cope with Young as back up to Shaw for next season as long as he’s not first choice RB.
 
Seems odd. If he is that highly rated and cheap, why won't Brendan Rodgers make a move for him?

He could be the signing Leicester make at 25 mil, make him near world class and sell for 60 mil in the future.

There is something Brendan knows that we don't...

Leicester have got probably the best young left back in England.
 
Shaw is on 200k a week!
Best paid LB for a reason ya know!
That reason being we let his contract run down so he held all the cards....Just like Martial, Just like De Gea, Just like Mata
 
I´ve followed Tierney 2-3 seasons at Celtic, and he had a brilliant breakthrough season under Ronny Deila just 18 years old, and concealed his position in the team the season after. But my feeling is he hasn´t developed much since then. He´s good in all phases of the game, but not really brilliant at anything. I´d imagine Rodgers would like to have him at Leicester, but maybe not a player for any of the top 6 teams. Last season we was injured for longer spells though, which probable set him back a bit. If I were looking at Celtic players, I´d rather sign Kristoffer Ajer (CD) - I actually see him as a greater prospect than Tierney.
 
I don't know him well. But with his hype, he should be at least better than Luke Shaw the fraud.
 
He’d be valued at £50m if he was playing in the PL. No brainier to snap him up for £25m.
 
Don't know anything about him but I'm fine with passing him up. I still rate Shaw very highly.

The only other one I can think of is Wanyama.
 
The Celtic fans absolutely adore him and feel the fee reported is far too low. Whether their feelings are local boy sentimentality, based on quality or somewhere between the two, I'm not sure. From what I've seen, he looks decent. I'm not sure he's got the cutting edge that many of us feel Shaw lacks. If we do sign a LB this Summer, I'd possibly prefer someone better going forward who can develop defensively such as Junior Firpo. I don't think we will though; in Shaw's absence, I see us using Young or Dalot at LB.
 
Cracking player that I'd be advocating we sign in normal circumstances. We have much bigger priories this summer though.
 
We should be all over this if the price quoted is true. We should be aiming for 2 top players in every position if we're to ever challenge city again.
 
We can't be buying backups for 25m when we already need without any question at all, a starting centre mid, and right sided attacker.
Then we need a top centre back.

Those 3 have to be first priorities.

Surely a combination. Homegrown, thrown into the team at young age and a likeable, humble bloke as well. In my option, United already has a better player in Shaw.
 
WTF. If we were after him, he'd be minimum £30m starting price. He'd be a fantastic player for any PL club.
 
Tierney is talented but he's overrated by the media in Scotland and especially Celtic fans. Also real concerns over his hip.

I remember regularly being told he was better than Robertson!

Struggled in Europe but then so did Van Dijk. Wouldn't pay over 20m for him but the EPL market is crazy.
 
Our LB position is already locked down.

Shaw is the perfect complement to Pogba and Martial.

If we brought in a different LB, they'd have to adapt to the role and end up being inferior for it. Check out how differently Young/Dalot play on the left versus the right. Shaw is, to all intents and purposes, the best left back in the world for the United set up.

None of which is not to say our setup should be unchangable. The left/right imbalance is far from ideal. But until Martial or Pogba get dropped, Lingard will continue to be the "RW" and a physivally dominant RB will continue to take the responsibility for the right flank. And left back will continue to be the home of a player with fantastic postioning, passing, pace and ball shielding skills. Nobody does that better than Shaw.

We'd need to sign around 15 players to do that. It's not going to happen in 1 Summer.

We've got 6 centre backs, 4 midfielders (not counting Pereira), 4 forwards (including Sanchez) 2 full backs and one winger (James). Then we've got the youth, Garner, Chong, Gomes and Greenwood.

If we want to sing a centre back, we have to get rid of at least 2. If none, we need to get rid of at least one. We obviously need to address the midfield.

At this price I just can't see how he wouldn't be a great signing. Fair enough @duffer made this point in more than one thread that "many people seem to be watching the SPL" and yes, I'm not a regular follower of the Scottish Premier League, but I've watched Tierney quite a few times and he's always looked very promising. I like his character and I think it would be greatly beneficial for Shaw to be pushed perpetually. They could both get plenty of games.

Seen alot of him, perhaps better than Shaw, but not by much. People talk about Our left side as its golden, but as long as Shaw Plays there it never will be. If we're gonna play attacking football With fast pace, we need fullbacks thats offer more than Shaw in attack.

But, then again, we got nothing on our right either. Shaw is still pretty good 1v1 defensively.

There are many left backs currently better than Shaw, and Tierny is one of them, for that price we should get him. We need Upgrades in almost every position. If the price quoted is correct its a cheap one as well.
 
Very similar to what people were saying about Sadio Mane whilst he was at Southampton.

Yeah, really is. Arsenal seem to have some competent people overseeing their tiny budget .
 
Shaw is not very good but Ole is a nice guy, he won't bin his player of the season.
