Liam Delap | £30m release clause?

Darren bent had better numbers in his first premier league season then went to fail at Tottenham. This season proves nothing.

Darren Bent was nothing like Delap as a player!

With Delap at £30m and relatively low wages is almost a no lose situation. Even if he doesn't quite make it here we could sell him to an Everton or West Ham in two years for a similar amount.

Yeah that's laughable isn't it, remember the days when we called the shots in this kind of scenario
We might get him if we get into the champions league

We’re being dictated to by fecking championship players
Or it could be a journalist just twisting the truth to get a few more clicks.

Even so, why would a player make a hasty decision before the season is over? To me it just seems like a very normal thing to do.

I have a gut feeling that this will be an amazing signing for us. He’s at the age where he could have a major breakthrough. Got lots to like about his game- great workrate, good touch, powerful runner and deadly finisher. Too good an opportunity to pass by

Agreed.

My biggest worry is that Liverpool will make a move for him. He's got the potential to be England's next top striker.

It's clear he loves this club too as he mentioned Ronaldo and Zlatan when building his ultimate striker.

or he could crumble under the gargantuan pressure at this club like many others before him

if our plan is for another talented young player to be the saviour.. good lord

I'd take Delap if it meant we sign Cunha and Mbeumo too.

Unrealistic I know but yeh...

I think the plan is Cunha as the main striker at first, and then to ease Delap in. Cunha is the main signing up front for us this year I reckon. This lad is backup/development/rotation, and is a better option than retaining useless Hojlund for that.

I do not agree with the claims we need someone experienced. For example, Weghorst and Ighalo were useless. We need someone that can score goals. It is pointless to buy a 30 year old just for the sake of “he has experience” if that player does not score many goals. So goal scoring ability should be the criteria and not simply age.

Would be absolutely crazy buying a player that has been so productive as an attacking left sided attacker and moving him to a position which he has struggled in at previous clubs . Not going to happen- I hope

Why is that a bad thing?

The lad is ambitious and wants to play at the very highest level.

I'd say it's a really good sign as he's clearly not just motivated by money.

I honestly can't understand why so many people are turning their noses up at Delap?

We'd be very lucky to get him and I think he'll turn out to be a hidden gem.

A lot of people need to face the reality of where we are at in 2025 and stop living in the past. We finished 8th in the league last season and are currently 16th! 16th!!! Yet people still think that we can attract the top players in world football!
I get it from his point of view, it’s just a sad state of affairs. In years gone by these players would’ve been climbing over each other to get here.

Yeah it's just the reality of where we are right now. 8th last season and 16th this season! We don't have quite the same pull factor anymore sadly!

I think they mean 'has experience of scoring goals'. Which Wout sadly lacked, despite his age.

Napoli apparently are close to a deal with David, I totally agree, I am happy to sign no strikers in this window rather than waste money. We don't have it to waste and we can still significantly strengthen other areas and wait for better options to be available for the striker position in another year if we have to. Short termism will just see us spinning our wheels and going nowhere for the next few years, better to build over a series of windows to an actual plan and only sign players that will raise the level of the squad.
Yeah but that unfortunately means another year of Hojlund which I can't bear to think about. Zirkzee clearly isn't a number 9 and like our resident Wolves fan said Cunha isn't the guy to lead line either. So in that case how are you going to deal with the situation next season?

Cunha isn’t a striker and the wolves fans here confirmed he’s not good as a striker. He plays where Rashford did, off the left

Vlahovic has had a shit season now. We shouldn't take him regardless of the Abraham comparison.
His stats per 90 are still better than Delap’s. I’m not claiming he would set the world alight but we need someone with more experience leading the line FFS. I don’t know why we don’t have Jonathan David wrapped up already in all honesty. We really need two strikers. In which case this signing would make a lot more sense.

He plays for Juventus in Serie A and Delap plays for relegated side. Delap is also 21 and made his debut in the league this year. Frankly his ceiling is higher and his output given that context is more impressive.

The point is it shouldn’t be either/or. We need a more experienced striker whoever it is even if Delap comes in. Or do you think Delap and Højlund as our options next season is sufficient ?

I think he'll be a good signing. I'm talking a 20 goal a season signing. People tend to overlook his qualities, but he is a good all-round player both the ball and off the ball. Will fit in quite a lot better than our current lot.

As you say, worse case we sell him to Everton, but I genuinely think he will surprise the fans here. Watch this space

Not sure about Arnautovic, the racist stuff made him pretty unpalatable last time we looked at him under ETH. We should have been in for Jiminez back when we got Hojlund, moved for a 5M fee to Fulham in that window and he would have been the ideal veteran to start games and develop someone behind. I have been looking to see if anyone comparable is available in this window for such a bargain price but am coming up empty at the moment.
Yeah no chance we would ever go for him after all the furore when Ten Hag tried a couple of summers ago

The fee might be "pennies" but his contract won't be, espeically if there are a number of teams after him
That will be true for most of the options we'd be looking to sign; nature of the beast. He'll be much cheaper in terms of wages than someone like Oshimen, or even Jonathan David, who would be coming on a free.

I'm not against the signing just the fact he would be the guy leading the line which is far too much pressure
