That's a bit harsh. He could sell pies in the stands. The only correct position for lingard is sat at home watching united games from the settee.

Too cruelI'd prefer to see him left back...in the dressing room
Two people beat you to that joke already I thinkRight back on the bench?

C'mon guys. However, he lacks the size and physicality for a typical outright full back so I am yet to be convinced that he could be anything more than a stop gap there. Wing back is a viable option though.
Next we'll have Lingard for centre back and then Lingard for goalkeeper - after all he must be good at something, mustn't he? Maybe not.
Hard worker =/= Can defendNot as a permanent figure, but considering he's a fairly hard worker he could be used for filling in there when Valencia's out.
I'm not arguing he's a particularly good defender, I'm saying that if our squad was incredibly thin due to injuries or suspensions then we'd maybe be able to slot him back there for a game or two. It's not something I'd really want to see, as such, but if we had to do it then he'd potentially do okay.Hard worker =/= Can defend
Here's a quick list of players that I'd play ahead of Lingard at RB when Valencia's out...off the top of my head.I'm not arguing he's a particularly good defender, I'm saying that if our squad was incredibly thin due to injuries or suspensions then we'd maybe be able to slot him back there for a game or two. If he can do all of this we won't have been thinking of removing him from the right wing !It's funny as I was thinking this exact same thing the other day and even started retraining Lingard as a right back on Football Manager ha ha.
In all seriousness though Lingard has a great engine, can beat a man, can cross and can basically do all of the things you'd want to see from an attacking right back although I have no idea on how he'd fare defensively.
You do have to think though that Dani Alves, Zambrotta, Valencia and Jordi Alba just to name a few were all wingers who became or are exceptional full backs and their natural attacking instincts were/are of great benefit.
I think as long as you have two centre backs and an out and out defensive midfielder in your team that allows for two attacking full backs, I personally don't see Lingard ever being a first choice player up the other end of the pitch so I don't see a problem with experimenting with him at right back against smaller teams.
Spot on. best post of this thread.C'mon guys.
He's not a good crosser of the ball. He can't dribble past players either because he's too weak and gets easily out-muscled. He doesn't have any balance, the second he gets touched during a run he goes down. Whenever he's played on the wing he drifts centrally as much as Mkhi and Mata do. He's not suited to provide natural width, which is the main requirement for a wing back.
Defensively, the less that's said the better. Closing down people and covering space is not the same as being able to tackle, win aerial and ground duels, man-mark players etc. In fact we tried it against Real Madrid (of all teams!) in the super cup final and Carvajal was having a field day out there. Lingard had to be hauled off at half time.
I don't see any attributes that would mark him as a good wing back or full back. Running is not an attribute for a wing back. It's a basic attribute for an outfield footballer.
His best attributes are moving into space, usually centrally, and linking up with one-twos. He's got a good shot/finish on him too. His best position is as CAM though he'll never be the main man for Man Utd in that position.
AgreeHis future is at West Ham or a club of that level.
West Ham kind of have their workhorse type of player that can play a-few positions, in Antonio. Thing is, Antonio is a better player. His future is at West Ham or a club of that level.

Mensah plays RCB as part of a back three.I'm not one to see Lingard as whipping boy... He did play a major role in us winning the FA and League cups, and seems to play his butt off for the team, which is more than can be said for some of the much more talented players to come through United in recent years.
That being said, I in no way want to see him converted to RB or RWB. He's a squad level player who can cover both wings and the attacking midfield, and that is just fine. No reason to try and turn him into something he doesn't have the physicality for.
On top of that, we've got Fosu-Mensah out on loan learning the RB/RWB trade at Palace right now. If he can prove his worth in the Premier League in this loan season, I see no reason to think he cannot be the eventual successor to Valencia.
His movement off the ball when he walks away is superb for a local lad.
Can't see it. He just walks away when someone embarrasses him, and you can't have that in defense.
