Lisandro Martinez | Signs for United

Let’s be honest - the ETH experiment is either going to go swimmingly or be a total fecking disaster. When we inevitably get Antony too we’ll have spent around 160m quid on targets I don’t think would be here if it wasn’t for him - I don’t want to see anyone saying he hasn’t been backed.
Look we have spend over 800m under Ole and Mourinho, and its complete disaster too. 160m is nothing in comparison.

Martinez is comfortably better and is left footed, and can also play DM.
For a posession team, ability on the ball he is comfortably better than anyone in the squad who plays his positions.
He is also an aggressive defender which we need

Hope you are right. It's all very well and good being good on the ball but you have to be able to defend well in the PL.

But I guess we either do it ETHs way and back him or not so if it's Martinez he wants it's Martinez he should get.

Given how we've operated in the window so far, I would not be surprised if we waited out Ajax on Antony. He clearly wants to leave, and the closer we get to the transfer window, the more pressure he might put on Ajax to let him for for a more sensible fee. It might end up not happening anyway, but I'm not so sure the deal is dead. It certainly won't be completed at the quoted price though, not with the way we're handling negotiations right now.

The problem is Ajax. Will they allow half of their starting 11 from last season to be decimated? Assume they are targeting to win the league and go as deep as possible in the CL this coming season.
That will be in jeopardy if they sell or lose half last year's champions.

I get backing the manager, and of course he'll know what kind of players he wants, but like you said we're in the same situation we've been the last decade if it goes sour. A ton of players any new manager may not fancy. Exactly the kind of thing you try to avoid by having a DoF.

So it's funny, people screaming about backing the manager and having a DoF at the same time

There is not a chance we’d be signing Malacia if ETH wasn’t here and I doubt FDJ would come. I’m not criticising any of the signings individually - just saying if you look at all of them as a package along with ETH we’ve gone all in and the potential for it to be a proper disaster is high. All summer we’re going to hear pundits say we’ve signed from the Dutch league with a manager who has done nothing outside of Holland - “BUT THIS IS THE PREMIER LEAGUE JEFF!!!” Let’s hope they’re wrong but any talk of us having club targets and getting a manager to fit a DOF structure with data driven recruitment has proven to be utter bollocks. There’s no club scouting here - it’s a manager yet again dictating who we sign.

It's clear now that one of his demands to come was full autonomy over transfers, hopefully he knows what he's doing.

For me the absolute key trait that he has that makes me excited is his pass accuracy.

He had around an 89% pass accuracy percentage last season. This is despite the fact that he attempted around 10 long passes per game and 40 forward passes.

No. Ole wasn’t a complete disaster. He finished 3rd and 2nd and got to a EL semi and final. Jose finished 2nd, won a EL and a LC. By any measure they weren’t disasters.
It was a disaster in the end. Point is, we have spent huge, and we end up worst.

There's another part to that tweet that's saying it's likely to be rejected as they want 50 million euros guaranteed.

While I agree in principle, I think even at a "modest" fee of €40-50M it would eventually be too much for them to pass on given they've lost Gravenberch for €19M, Mazraoui for free and Onana for free. €40M for Martinez and €40-50M for Antony gives them a solid budget to bring in replacements. They've already lost some pretty key players for next to nothing, so I imagine getting a decent fee for two of their players is quite the attractive proposition. While you never know with Ajax, they will probably need a bit more cash to get their team back in shape.

Any examples of CBs as tall as him that have been a success in the PL, playing in a back 4?

Considering his completion rate, I would assume it is a result of the amount of passes he makes.

What do you make of the defensive stats? (see below)

Seems like our most likely CB signing at this point. I'm excited. Heres some of my posts about Lisandro Martinez as I've kept an eye on him and first saw him breakthrough in the Argentine league as an outstanding player
..
So if we do sign him and he turns out to be rubbish, I'll fully accept responsibility  On the other hand...

Nice call!

This was in my youtube recconmendeds, thought it would be good because Nunez is a physical striker who is good in the air

That was fantastic, I'm more confident that he can make it here after watching that. I thought he was weak physically (not just short) but he likes to get into those duels.

What do you make of the defensive stats on fbref? (Only CL games from last season, was unable to find Eredivisie data)

36th percentile in successful pressures
1st percentile in successful pressure %
1st percentile in blocks
38th percentile in Interceptions

It's possible that we do poorly at first while the squad adapts and well after that. I'm prepared to back the manager even if it's a total disaster initially.

People focus too much on individual games and scorelines. We might lose the friendly to Pool 4-0. That might build a narrative, who knows? We might lose 4-0 again and the Ole in brigade will come out with their pitchforks. But in my book he has proved himself as a great tactician, all his former players / assistants love him (same can't be said about Ralf) and it's time to back him like we've backed Ole.

Dont think so. But Roberto Ayala was 1.77 instead of 1.75 and was a top CB in Spain noted for his aerial ability because of his huge leap, played for Valencia as captain

FDJ probably wouldn't come without ETH but that certainly doesn't mean we wouldn't want to sign him.

Agree though with your overall point but with all the change this summer in scouting and structure we are not really in a position to dictate to ETH who we should be signing, we are a mess and need immediate direction. The mass exodus of players this summer also doesn't leave us with much wriggle room.

It's all or nothing and I think that's how it has to be for the moment, definitely a gamble, let's hope it works.

I fully expect Arsenal to come up with a higher bid now. Lets see.

What position do we think he'll play? Centre back or midfield?

This makes a lot of sense and I am pleased with this signing. He has an amazing attitude and is the kind of player that will run through walls for the team and manager, exactly what we need.
It also makes sense because ETH doesn’t have an unlimited budget and won’t necessarily know who is going to take to his ideas and who won’t - so bring in the guy you know can play in multiple positions - CB, LB and DM. Hell I’m sure he could probably play right back too if needed.
This is very much the Daly Blind signing of Ten Hag’s reign

I agree with this. The initial narrative when ETH went to Ajax and struggled for form initially was that he signed players from FC Utrecht (Labyad and someone else) that he knew were not good enough.

They never ended up being good enough really but he was able to turn around Ajax's fortunes, so all was forgiven.

FdJ is objectively a good signing. I'm not concerned about that. Martinez, Antony, Timber, Malacia etc. are all from Ten Hag, I'm disappointed that we don't have alternatives lined up there.

Looks like with Woodward gone, so are the days of doing nothing on weekends.

CB, ETH has already been quoted from when he was at ajax on whether he prefers martinez in dm or cb position and it was the latter.

Argentine journalists who have followed his career and his break into the national team also say his best position is CB.

He will end up partnering Varane at the back. Martinez isnt slow but he doesnt have Varane recovery pace and pairing him and Maguire together would leave you open to balls played in behind the CBs in a high block. As neither has the pace that varane does.

He reached the UCL semi in his first full season so it didn't take him long to get going though.
