Simple premise, I’ve seen maybe 3 or 4 of these films and we’ve decided to watch the whole lot.

What is the best order and why?

Go.

I am nowhere near running out of things to watch it will be years before I revisit these.

I still have The Wire and Breaking Bad to watch and people look at me funny when I tell them.

And Peaky Blinders plus a lot more.

I can say Captain Marvel is comfortably the worst. And for me I loved Black Panther and Guardians 1 most (with Guardians edging it).

Different people will have their own features they appreciate in films more than others. For me, I thoroughly enjoyed both Guardians films, Iron Man trilogy was good but ultimately just a comedy that depends solely on Ironman himself. Thor III was great, Thor 1 was decent, Thor II was shite but not as shite as Captain Marvel.

Captain America was a bit more boring because Steve Rodgers is a plane jane boring character. Still enjoyed the standalone films though. The Spiderman ones I felt were most lazy in terms of writing and plot holes, but they're very funny so it's a hit for me.

But yeah, we could have done without Captian Marvel in the whole franchise tbh.

I'd take this list and cut out 2/3rds of them. Watching them over 15 years was a bit exhausting, trying to get through all in one go would be awful.
My list:
Iron Man
The Avengers
Captain America: Winter Solder
Guardians 1 & 2
Avengers 2 (possible to skip its not great)
Civil War
Spiderman
... and i'd probably watch the rest except Ant Man because it brings you up to date and you know whats happening in Doctor Strange 2, Black Panther 2 etc.

Of the more recent ones Thor Ragnarok and maybe Infinity War would be the only ones i can see myself recommending in 10 years time though.

Thor Ragnorak and the first Guardians are both awesome films in their own right, all the other ones are fine if forgettable. Just watch them two at all costs.

So chronological over release date?
She gave the chronological order which kind of works well, but also by release date it perfectly wall. The main difference is that Captain America was released after the first (and maybe second) Iron Man (but the movies do not interfere with each other), and Captain Marvel was one of the last released movies though chronologically it is very early (however, again it makes no difference).

If you want to skip some of them, I would say a good list might be:

Iron Man
Thor 1
Captain America Winter Soldier
The Avengers
The Avengers 2 (you can skip it, if you want)
Guardians of the Galaxy
Black Panther (IMO, it is quite skippable)
Captain America: Civil War
Thor Ragnarok (not relevant to the main story, but genuinely hilarious)
The Avengers: Infinity War
The Avengers: Endgame

Oh, Spiderman 2 is hilarious too (together with Ragnarok, the funniest Marvel movie). I think other than those I mentioned, the rest are from poor to ok.

Phase 1
  • Iron Man (the start)
  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Iron Man 2 (almost skipped this but felt Fury and Black Widow were to important)
  • Thor
  • The Avengers
Phase 2
  • Iron Man 3 (deals with fallout from IW)
  • Captain America: Winter Soldier
  • Guardiansof the Galaxy (could go anywhere)
  • Ant-Man
  • Captain America: Civil War (the real blockbuster of Phase 2)

Phase 3 part 1
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming (leads from CW)
  • Doctor Strange
  • Black Panther
  • Thor: Ragnarok
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
  • Avengers: Infinity War
Phase 3 part 2

  • Captain Marvel
  • Ant-Man and The Wasp
  • Avengers: Endgame
Phase 4 tbc
  • Spider-Man: Far From Home (post-Endgame)
Skipped a few crap movies. You miss Vision and Scarlet Witch being introduced but they are crap anyway and SWs voice changes anyway so you may as well miss that.

@Rado_N if this is your feeling on the marvel universe then like Donaldo says just do these and obviously don't miss the Thanos ones, duh.

But if unlike Donaldo you do like sci fi comics and action films then watch them all ffs. It's like saying if you're a gangster movie buff watch the Godfather up to part two and don't bother about the third one cos it's not as good. :houllier:

Yea the idea came up as a way of filling some time so we may as well watch them all. I’m sure some will suck but feck it.

Chronological order sounds best (I'll watch them all again that way when get chance). You just have to power past stuff like Iron Man 2 and 3, and know there's better to come.

Chuck Deadpool in near the end too if not seen

As the “second” movie in the order I’m watching, Captain Marvel is confusing as feck. I feel like there’s an assumption of a lot of prior knowledge that I don’t have.

It was the 3rd most recently released of them. So it probably is assuming a level of prior knowledge. It'd probably be better placed after Infinity War for a first time viewer regardless of chronological order. Then again it was kind of a messy, disordered story in the first place so maybe its just the movie.

Should watch it after Infinity War or it'll just not work.

yeah. I agree with the post you quoted. Just be aware that captain marvel is one of the weakest of the bunch (Hulk and Thor 2 being the others. I would even argue Hulk should be skipped. Different actor for Hulk, different studio, and only a very mild link to the rest). Phase 1 is decent but once you reach Guardians of the Galaxy, they are all very good in my opinion

I think I grasped enough as it went along to follow it. Some things are making sense now. Definitely a bit of a mess, though, agree there.

I’m pretty much locked in to the order above now!

Once you've seen 3-4 you've kind of seen them all.
Watching them over 15 years was a bit exhausting, trying to get through all in one go would be awful.
Only after reading those 2 comments I've realised how truly awful a MCU marathon would feel like. I guess I never thought about it before — even when you watch them as per release date, the trops become repetitive, watching them movie after movie would feel like you're watching the same thing over an over again with some randomizer changing character's names every 3 hours.

I definitely wouldn't recommend watching them all, just take 4 or 5 good/outstanding ones (Ragnarök ) and watch only them instead.

As for the order, every movie is an ad for an incoming movies, even if they technically happen earlier in the universe, I doubt that the "chronological" order would be better than the one based on release dates.

Go.
Start with 1998's Nick Fury: Agent Of Shield.

Release order isnt much different to chronological order. Main shifting I can think of is Captain Marvel mostly (and im trying to remember if the post credit scenes would confuse much). Otherwise Phase 1 movies can be seen around each other. Do think Ironman was a great starting point for the franchise.

Regardless, I think if youre a comic book fan, it would be a good marathon to go through especially after the characters are introduced. Most of the origin movies are similar, but the teamup ones later become loads of fun esp once youre in phase3.

You should watch the one where everything is at stake and 'this time' their enemy is almost beyond their combined powers but, after loads of explosions, they save the world. But victory comes at a moral cost and they learn something about themselves. That one was great.

Doesn't it (Ant-Man and The Wasp) happened before Infinity War?

Only its ending happened just as soon as IW ended.
Id say the same time, but due to the ending you wanna watch it after IW.
