Messi is better than maradona....

Finally, at least this thread has a chance of a even battle. Ronaldo one was too one-sided imo.

Messi is still only 23...frightening.

My belief is that Messi will eventually be a clearly better play than Maradona, if he isn't already that is.

Done this a million times. 1) win world cup, preferably single handedly and 2) go to an equivalent club like Napoli and do wonders for them. Not rocket mathematics.

Never saw Maradonna, but my mind genuinely cant comprehend him being anywhere near as good as Messi.

Messi is as good as Maradona for sure.

2-3 years more.I am sure he will surpass Maradona.

Then take it from oldies that watched him during their teens. Messi can be as good as Maradona (he isn't yet) since he has all the attributes. But honestly Maradona would do things that would make you weep. Messi is nearly there but not yet.

Are you serious? If not, this is bullshit. Why should Messi go to a shit team just to prove himself that he's the best? Should he come to England as well just to dispel the myth that he could'nt handle a wintry night at the Brittania. Win the World Cup single handedly? Erm, with a team that consists of Ageuro, Tevez, Mascherano, Pastore...Are you expecting the coach to drop all of his best players just for the fun of it? My point being that if Messi does win a World Cup, he wont be able to do it single handedly because he's playing in such a good team. He would never get the credit for it that Maradonna did.

Maradona has to be some kind of superhero to be better than this guy. Also that Napoli thing is very strange, why should Messi go to a smaller club and then lead them to a trophy to be hailed as better than Maradona?

I feel old when I read stuff like this, I can't believe many who say it have seen much of Maradona in his prime, and he never ever had the machine around him that Messi has at Barcelona.

Mate, them are the hands that get dealt. And those are the legacies that will be left.

He has to do it at international level before he can be compared to Maradona. Maradona's achievements with napoli were phenomenal, given that he was up against a world class Milan side, but there's no way Messi can be criticised for not playing for a weaker club team. At domestic level he's reached Maradona's level, but at international level he's still got a way to go.

Yep. I'd love to see Messi play in a lesser side... actually he does - Argentina.

All I am comparing is maradona's play against united, vs. messi's play against united.

And there is only one winner in this, and it isn't the cokehead.

That I can agree with, growth-hormone-head is the clear winner here.

At least Messi's put this stupid, he'd struggle on a wintry night at the Brittania to bed. He's physically a beast on the ball, not often does Carrick look helpless once someones ran past him, his balance is truly incredible.

Hmmmm , why doesnt he shine for Argentina ?? Sofar he only shines for Barca , surounded by superstars .

I think at the end of his career it will be Messi hands down.

Right now I think it's a matter of preference.

For me Messi's the greatest of all time even if he retired last season.

Don't think he got past Rio mind you:devil:

Vidic was another story:(

Has he really though!? :smirk:

i think messi has done at 23 more things that maradona did at that age

but messi still needs to do a couple of things before they can be compared

messis dribbling technique is as good as maradona, but maradona had a couple of things that messi still don't have, the passing habilitie and the free kicks

don't get me wrong, messi is very good at that too, but still not in the same league as maradona

We are witnessing the greatest player ever

What I would give to see him in a United shirt

Messi is a beautiful thought machine. How he thinks 3 steps ahead of anyone else on the pitch is just an exercise in motion. He's certainly the most intelligent player I've ever witnessed, there's a case for his intelligence even surpassing his ability (which is unmatched certainly in the modern era).

That's fair enough. Others would say Best, Cruyff, Puskas were better than Maradona too. Its all about opinions.

Right or wrong.

Messi's passing ability is absolutely magical and inventive at the same time. Don't know what you're implying here, but his vision is easily on Maradona's level.

What's his status like in Argentina? Tremendous player without question, but is he as much of a star there?

I actually couldn't care less who is described as "the better player" in someone/the minority/the majority's opinion.

Neither player ever played again the same opponent so it is completely pointless.

By all means compare Messi and Ronaldo but comparing a players from different eras is pointless.

that is the reason you cannot comprehend him being better than Messi.

btw, Best was better too and at a younger age.

I've heard my relatives say Best was better too, which just leaves my head spinning tbh. I dont know, its way too difficult to compare players from different eras and thats the truth, because its impossible to find an answer; too many varying factors.

as i said, he is a very good passer, but not in the level of maradona,

remember 1986 final game against germany? maradona pass to burruchaga was magical, and it took him a split second to watch burruchaga and pass him the ball

the same against brazil in 1990 world cup, he's pass to caniggia was out of this world, and he did it while he was being fouled

he is

the difference is that he hasn't play for an argentinian side, so he doesn'¡t have the back up of a set of fans,

that can be a plus in the long run because if he had played for river, boca fans will look him suspiciously

He will go down as the greatest ever.

10 years from now even the numpites will admit that.

No contest

from old matches i've seen, whilst the tackling was rougher...the team defense was atrocious in the 50's and 60's. so much 1v1......defenses never rotated as fast and closed down space nearly as quick as they do in modern (after 1985) football.

I think someone like messi, whilst would've been kicked more, also would've gotten so much more 1v1 opportunities in 'old' football and consequently roasted teams even worse.

Maradona was a better playmaker than Messi, Messi is a better forward than Maradona.

All in all, Messi is probably the better player. He has scored, what, 53 goals this season? And he did it while playing more as a No 10 than a striker. Out of this world.

Heavier balls and footballing equipment...refs less likely to blow the whistle. You can't compare eras to be fair....but he's clearly the best player of his generation. And that should be enough.

all these people saying Messi is better never saw Maradona and Best being kicked left right and center. Remember they did not have the protection players have now.

and some saying better than Pele as well

those 3 stand above all others who played the game...end off...with one proviso. Duncan Edwards.

others who did see Edwards would say he would be the 4th man.

he would score 80+ 30-40 years ago
