Trying to figure out who should win an individual award by analysing mainly their teams. What a fraud of an award.

Messi will always be the GOAT. W

When Ronaldo retires no one will miss him. He's a glorified goal poacher, nothing more. Goal poachers don't get regarded in the GOAT list because they're so depedant of other people setting them up. That's why we never talk about Muller in the GOAT list.

Ronaldo has no aura of amazement in football. He doesn't have what Messi, Zidane, Ronaldinho. Maradona, Cryuff, Ronaldo Luis have / had.

Reading the difference in their performances thread after Ronaldo's game against PSG and Messi's against Chelsea is bonkers.

What do you mean?

The usual.

One was poor, the other was the best player on his team by a mile.

One had incredible players around him, the other was playing by himself.

One scored a jammy goal, the other brilliantly wrongfooted the keeper.

Etc.

It's not a surprise to see people prefer the aesthetics over effectiveness. It's pretty natural.

You must not notice the hyperbole that surrounds Ronaldo whenever he does something then? For every post about better teammates or jammy goals there's lots of positive shit posted too.

I didn't think either player were that good in the games tbh. Messi controlled the game possession wise but had little end product and Ronaldo didn't do anything besides score a penalty and a tap in (a standard Ronaldo game tbh). Played through one on one and blasts it right at the keeper. Few chances/free kicks skied over the bar etc.

Marcelo and Busquets were the best players in the first leg.

The positive is warranted and happens equally to both players, the negative is a completely different story since noone dislikes Messi. But let's not get into that.

Most people here regards Possession > Goals

Welcome to Louis Van Gaal football school of excellence.

But surely the quality of the goals counts for something?

If all you do is play on the shoulder of the last defender and score goals put on a plate for you then it surely matters. I'm not saying that's all Ronaldo does but it's a huge part of his game.

And you're talking like Messi didn't also score in the first leg. So, what we have is a guy who controls the game and whose team is dependent on him to create and score everything and a poacher. I know which is more impressive and if that's from the LVG school of excellence I'm surprised United were so shit under him.

Funny thing is Ronaldo was rated 9/10 in his match against PSG, whereas Messi was only rated 7/10 against Chelsea, both by soccernet.

Anyway I have no question on Messi being the better player in general, but sometimes the perceived opinions of fans will distort the actual performances and contributions of both players.

They're not put on a plate for him, he gets the chances because he works to get them off the ball and playing on the shoulder of the last defender isn't an easy skill that anyone can do. How many times did Barcelona get space through the flanks but created no danger at all because there's no big threat in the box? How many times were Barcelona players in good positions only for Messi to be standing still instead of trying to get behind the defense?

Creating chances is as much about moving off the ball as it is about being able to have the vision and passing ability to actually find those runs. The difference is the player making the run only gets credit if the ball actually gets there and he puts it in the back of the net.

This is not me criticizing Messi or saying he doesn't move without the ball, he had a good game and scored a huge goal. It's just that they create problems for defenses in very different ways.

I wonder why no other player or coach ever came up with this innovative way of playing the game.

That's simply because cRonaldo is not a genius like those listed above. He's a goalscoring machine, and a player who plays by instinct. Of course he's one of the best ever in this aspect.

But geniuses are on another level. Messi is 2 seconds ahead of the rest and has the field on his mind, he's always scanning the pitch to se where the other players are. He's always aware of time and space, and managesto find the way to receive the ball alone almost all the time, like happened yesterday, or like happened at the Bernabeu when they beat Madrid 3-2.

Ronaldo gets quickly to score goals by instinct. Is more about that, and power. You watch him shot and you know he can score, hit the keeper or something, he doesn't control it that much. You see how messi finishes, he always aim and tries to make it hard to the keeper by curling the shots. Messi is about precision.

In fact, in the goal Messi scored yesterday you'd guess Ronaldo would shot that strongly and probably to the same spot. While Messi attempted to shoot with precision far from the keeper.

Of course, if we are talking about sports, there arguments are normally based around accomplishments. But the argument cannot be quantitative, it is qualitative. There is an transcendental aura around Messi. There is something intangible. Messi is the sublime.
All that you say about Messi can be said about Ronaldo it has been their Era but if they both were to retire today it would be Ronaldo with the edge. He just has that THING. When the going gets tuff he is always there he would never had retired after losing a penalty shootout for his country where HE missed the penalty. Stuff like that count just as much as the talent.
Almost all of Ronaldos assists are square passes after cleraring the defence. Gerd Muller also had the highest assist for Bayern in his prime but noone here will say he is a creative genius.

This is why stats tell littlr. Watch the gamees and its obvious. Ronaldo waits around the box, gets a defence splitting pass then squares the ball or crosses.

Messi takes out 3 lines with one pass.
But in the end both count for the same do they not? they still take the awareness to do it but we are not just talking about talent but the whole package. Say the game is on the line last kick of the game the scenario is the same for both Ronaldo and Messi Ronaldo wins it every time.

Interesting, where was the cluthc the whole season where Madrid are out of the title race?

Where was he in the last classico? Messi demolished Madrid, won against Atletico by himself. Ronaldo is 'clutch' because he gets fed balls. Messi has to initiate attacks and also get on the end.

When Messi had the service and played closer to the box he was scoring 60+ and 70+ goals a year.

Where has Ronaldo's clutchness been when Madrid have 2 league titles in 9 years...
Ronaldo has the record for most goals scored consecutive vs Barca my friend they are his playground. I understand that too many Messi is the golden boy the good boy and its hard to face reality. But yet again I emphasize how close it is they are two of the greats.

Third time of asking. Use the correct thread please. All comparisons go in the Messi/Ronaldo thread.

yea, Messi already did that when Barcelona won 3-2 and Ronaldo was anonymous.

Messi takes less shots, has better shot selection and is more accurate with his finishing. Ronaldo has taken the most shots every season for like the last decade since Opta started recording stats.

In the end you want to know what I know? Messi quit on his country after HE choked he did the same vs Chelsea in 2012 and vs Germany in 2014. It is not just about talent which Ronaldo has bags of. It seems people think Ronaldo is a better form of Javier Hernandez. I understand he is your favorite player but if you want a big game player look no further Ronaldo is THAT guy.

Was lucky enough to be at the Camp Nou on Sunday to watch the game vs Athletico.I have seen Ronaldo live about 20 times but this was the first time I saw Messi live.

Messi is the greatest player I have ever seen live. He seemed to be unplayable and his free kick for the goal was a peach.

That's like saying Ronaldo quit on his country by choosing to shoot the 5th penalty vs Spain, which eventually he couldn't take, just for the ego of being the face of victory, instead of scoring the first one and put pressure on the enemy players.

But it's never that simple, Messi quit Argentina because he was giving 101% for a donkey team with a corrupt federation, and instead of being praised for leading such a circus to 3 international finals in 3 years, he was the target that half of Argentina aimed at to keep spinning news and feed the Diego vs Leo feud.

29 goals in 40 finals*, and yet he chokes at important matchs. Because he missed two penalties?. Like Ronaldo never failed one in a UCL final shoutout.

Its easy, Ronaldo is worldclass in scoring goals - Messi is worldclass everywhere (ok ,except the defensive game).

He did miss of course they all do its the name of the game but that Spain game at that time Ronaldo was always the last to kick you can not compare that as he always did it just as he did vs athletic in the final. Messi took it missed ( which is fine it happens to the best) and then quit when he is the leader of that team and the "face" of soccer the "golden boy" Ronaldo record in the CL speaks for itself and I am not talking about the group stage but rather the knockouts where he absolutely obliterated every team up into and including the finals last year. As I said if Ronaldo is a 10 on the scale Messi is a 9.9 its that close but I'm taking Ronaldo all day he has that "aura" with him in your side you are that much closer to winning. As I said before in an era where people say Messi compares to the Peles and Maradonas of the world Ronaldo has been neck and neck with him the whole way through and as of right now? he is just that bit above. I will say again if Ronaldo wins the Champions league for the third time in a row adding to his Euro 2016 win this debate is well and truly buried. Messi would need a Monster World Cup to eclipse him.

That's because you're talking about stats, not football.

Ronaldo was a way better player 10, 8, 6 or even 4 years ago than what he is now, what did he had to show in silverware with Real Madrid?. Nothing close to what Messi had in the same era.

As I said and showed weeks ago, Ronaldo's stats in the KO round have gone ballistic in the last year, if you were to compare Leo at his age, against Cristiano at the same age, they were basically even in goals in the KO round. What happened is that one lost a generational midfield wonder duo in Xavi-Iniesta, and the other won it in Modric-Kroos, that's how Cristiano has been able to rack the amount of goals he has now while being less involved in his team game than in 2010 or 2012, he can delegate more, like Messi could do before.

But there's other things to the game, and midfield has always been important too (I'd even say the key part), the fact that Messi has kept his record in check with a top 3 all-time goalscorer while also being a much better midfield player is why he has layed grounds for the GOAT talk for almost a decade.

Anyone ever argued that Eto' was on the same level as Messi when he fell 2 goals behind in the treble season?, or that Suarez was a better player because he outscored Leo in 2016? RVN outscored Ronaldo, yet when the time of choosing between Cris and Ruud came, RVN had to take his bucket of goals and leave to Real Madrid, because even if no one at that time had realist expectations that Ronaldo would become a better scorer than Ruud, everyone could see that Ronaldo was already the better football player.

You can personally bury the debate anytime you want, but you're never going to bury the notion in most people minds that Messi is a better player than Cristiano, when it was the era of letting other players take care of the engine and be there to score, he did it at a rate better than Ronaldo, and when the era of taking the reins in midfield has come, Messi has done it seamlessly, he can keep banging goals at an absurd rate, on par with the best strikers in the world, while driving his team like a generational talent would do.

If you think that what settles the rivalry is that in their 30's Ronaldo ends up playing as a positional striker, Hugo Sanchez style, and Messi starts playing deeper in a Iniesta/Modric fashion, widening the gap in stats, not football, then that's your opinion, and your (and a big bunch of other people) agenda, but it's nothing definite.

Its easy, Ronaldo is worldclass in scoring goals - Messi is worldclass everywhere (ok ,except the defensive game).

I’ve always said this even as a CR7 fan. It’s obvious he’s the better goal scorer and Messi is the better all around player.

But one thing you can say about Ronaldo is he’s unequivocally the greatest goal scorer in footballing history - that’s how relentless he’s been, that he’s left everyone else that’s touched a football in his rear view mirror by surpassing them in terms of goal scoring and there’s no arguement to be had...that’s one thing Cristiano will always have over Messi. He can without a doubt say he’s the greatest scorer of all time while Messi can’t say he’s unequivocally the greatest player or greatest in whatever category ever, since he hasn’t widened the gap to the point where CR7 has with goal scoring.

Unbelievable achievement. However, the thing about Ron being the fastest to reach 300 La Liga goals is misleading. Ronaldo arrived in La Liga as he was entering his prime at 23 years old. Messi was in La Liga from a teenager and not in his prime.

This is not correct, it is an opinion. Not an exact figure but I researched it a while ago, Messi is only about 40 career goals behind Ronaldo in about 150 less games. So how is Ron the better goal scorer? Especially as he plays closer to goal and has about 20 shots a game. Messi has a better shots per goal ratio, and a better goals per game ratio.
