Great servant and I hope he enjoys a well earned break from the pressure.

Loved him as a player and if he's got designs to be a manager he needs to get in with a good coach for a few years

Yeah but then why should we believe any of it? It seems just as likely that Carrick was sacked and all this stuff about wanting to keep him and him wanting to 'spend time with his family' was just PR.

I personally find it impossible to believe he would just walk away from a large 3 year compensation package by resigning voluntarily. It smells of bullshit.

Ralf wouldn't come out saying he tried to get Carrick to stay then, he would have just said good luck to Carrick.

Carrick did also say he wanted to go when Ole went. Why can't Carrick leave voluntarily? His compensation package is probably not as big as you think, he was a first team coach.

The way it has come out, it was clear that the decision was made a while back and they were waiting for Ralf to take charge.

Sure he would if that's what Carrick wanted. It enhances Carrick's reputation if he wasn't sacked.

You can believe what you like but I don't buy a word of it. There's too much conflicting subtext.

That's fine, you can believe what you want.

The way I see it, if he was getting sacked, Phelan and Mkenna would have gone too.

Secondly, they wouldn't sack someone and let them take charge of the team, you think they said Carrick you are sacked but you need to work for 3 more days.

The club put him in charge. Carrick left because he then realised he had no role under Rangnick. What do you think they talked about for two hours. Ralf begging Carrick to stay?

I think the club would still have kept him around as a mascot ambassador type if he had refused to go. But anyone can see Ralf had zero point zero uses for a coach who doesn't understand Gegenpress. He would just be in the way, let's be honest.

To my ears Carrick's aside in his interview about too much being made of pressing versus counter attack was like Carrick yelling through a loudhailer telling Ralf to shove his system up his ass.

Okay, so you know what Rangnick is thinking? He has no coaching staff with him at the moment. If he didn't want him, he would have got his coaching staff before sacking Carrick.

So what do you think Rangnick and Ole talked about? Bring him back? Ofcourse not, I can talk to someone for 2 hours about the squad let alone the coaches who work with them everyday.
 
I like Carrick but I am glad he has gone. I`m hoping to see experienced coaches working with the players and for once agree with Scholes where he says we don`t need people learning on the job at United but need the very best. Fingers crossed it all goes well and so far Rangnick comes across well.

It just all contradicts and smacks of a PR operation. So let's just judge them by their actions and basic political positions and not their words. Carrick has no value as a Gegenpress coach. That's why he is going. Was Rangnick saying 'Please stay for a long time and I will teach you my ways'? I guess not.

And yes I imagine Ralf would have liked to keep Carrick around for a few weeks as a transitional figure till he got the right people in, but that would have been quite humiliating for Carrick. This way he has gone with dignity.

How do you know a young coach has no value? Carrick is not a vetran, he is only 3/4 years into his coaching, its not like he has one way of coaching.

No but as most young coaches, they learn from the manager.

If it was a sacking and they cared about his reputation, the most common way is mutual consent. You wouldn't see Carrick coming out after the game doing the interview, you wouldn't see the story come out straight out after the game either.
 
Legend and one of my favourite players from the CL winning team, always the coolest man in possesion! Hoping he tries his hand at management in the future, will follow with a huge interest!

Ralf could have just said, I didn't speak to him and respect his decision. The club briefed very recently that Carrick and McKenna were going to stay on and be assessed over the next 6 months.

I think its a mixture of Carrick wanting to spend time with his family and his loyalty to Ole. Ole nearly cried when he spoke about Carrick and Carrick came out in defence of Ole after he was sacked. I'm convinced they were having an affair.

Mummy and daddy love each other very much. They just won't be living in the same house anymore. Happy?

It doesn't really matter anyway. We can all believe what we like. Like some people believe Ole was a good coach and the Glazers are good owners. That's the essence of PR.

Shrug.. maybe.. oh well... maybe carrick found out that coaching wasnt his cup of tea.
People can lose interest when they're not doing well

Thank you MC. The way he set the team up for the last three games at least showed he saw the problems many of us saw with Ole set up. Hope he goes on to have a great career as a manager.
 
never know... he may come back to coach in like 10-15 years with mucho experience. The world works in funny ways like that.
 
In the end he had to go but unlike Ole he did it on his own terms.

Extremely good player but as a coach I was never convinced he deserves a break now
 
I think he's got the makings of a top manager. He needs to go away and get a few years experience at lower clubs, then who knows he might be back.
 
Respect to Carrick, he got us through 3 tough almost season defining matches to could have written off almost our entire season in terms of progressing in champions league and trying to get a top 4 spot.

No he doesnt.

Need to stop giving marking of a great manager label to anyone easilly.

He's been a coach and assistant manager for 3 years, and even if he's not the main man he will surely have inputs and directly coaching his players, and it all turns to turd tactically and individually. Most of our players regressed. Almost all are worse now than they were 3 years ago.

So no. Unless he took a sabatical and learn something new he's not a good manager.

I swear united fans are the only sets of fans who sees SAF in any one. Fletcher, ole is dubbed as genius, Carrick the mastermind, mckenna, need to stop, it's cringey.

His 3 matches are average at best, nick a result but hardly a masterpiece. Defending for dear life against chelsea.

By all means, classy player, respect his decision to step down voluntarily. But never in a million years a good manager
 
Sounds like Rangnick spoke to Carrick afterwards and tried to convince him to stay. Rangnick also said he'll have to work with the coaches here and it will be difficult to get others in so I really do feel he would've wanted Carrick to stay and help with the transition but Carrick explained his stance to him and knows when to go.

It's also going to be tough for Ralf to entice people in for 6 months to drop their current positions. We see the appeal and opportunity for Ralf but not so much for his potential staff, could be a real short spell for them if Ralf ends up in his advisory role.

During his short stint, he has shown himself to be an excellent head coach. I wish Rangnick would bring him back soon.
 
I wish ole had the humility as carrick to know when to step away from the club, rather than just trying to prop up his woeful managerial career over what was actually good for the club

They clearly spoke.

The question is whether they spoke about selections/tactics or his future, i reckon its the latter.

If ole left after the europa league final, he might have gotten a pl team to manage by now.

always felt it a bit strange that both seemed desperate to leave. Carrick in particular seeing as he hadnt anything lined up.

Perhaps suggests he was done with this squad particularly after Ole's protection of them

It's more the case he was done with all the abuse he was getting from our loyal fanbase.

Him & McKenna were the ones getting all the blame for Ole's failures.

I think the whole situation had been toxic for a little while. The press/fans etc - many of us blamed them just as much as Ole for the mess.

He did the right thing really, got off a sinking ship with his reputation intact. Now if anything it's been enhanced. He certainly did a decent interim job for us.

There does seem to be a toxic culture among the squad, some are happy to let their agents stir the pot, others think they have an entitlement to be in the starting 11 etc, Carrick will probably have witnessed that first hand and he doesn't seem like the type to just 'let it go' in return for friendship like the Norwegian One.
 
Imagine the blame/hate he would be getting by now had we stayed on. Or maybe we would have more points by now had he remained on.
