Michael Carrick | Sacked by Middlesbrough

4 consecutive loses for him now. What's going on?
He's a dead man walking unfortunately. They sold his best players for big money almost every transfer window (Akpom, Morgan Rogers, now Latte Lath), replacing with loans and hidden gems. With such a constant squad turnover (due to injuries too), he's done remarkably well. This window however their luck with hidden gems ran out, the replacements (mostly loans) for the players they sold are looking unfit and disinterested.

He's definitely too stubborn though. Should have changed the system to fit lesser quality players. Sticking to pretty football when you have unfit and less talented players is suicide. Almost all the goals they concede are self-inflicted from passing out from the back and terrible defending.

Still, he's the longest serving current Championship manager. Everyone's seen his attractive football and what he could do with good players. Everyone's seen how he developed players very quickly to be sold for a big profit. He might do a Kompany and get even a better job after getting the sack.

This is officially the laziest football cliche on the British Isles.

I've watched the highlights of all the Championship games they've played this year (8). In this period they've conceded 12 goals and scored 9 goals. Their W-D-L record is 1-2-5 in this period.

2 goals was due to a defender being cute with the ball at the back
2 goals was due to the ball being lost in possession in midfield, and an attacker winning the offside battle against a high line
8 goals were conceded in regular or dead ball phases of play, some involving keeper error.

Even in their rut, most of their goals are not "self inflicted". And what system can Carrick switch to halfway through a busy season that would improve results?

5 losses in row now? What's the mood around Middlesbrough now? Closer to a sack?

Given they lost their main goalscorer in January for big money (for a Championship team) and his replacement hasn't bedded in fully, I think Carrick has earned some sympathy and time.

Funnily enough, the player who was just sold for a nice fee, was the replacement of Akpom, who they also sold for a good amount to Ajax.

Got a much needed win tonight.

Glad to see him getting another victory. But those 5 successive defeats really hurt Middlesbrough.

in the sense of getting promotion yes, but honestly you only need to look at luton for example. Teams that drop from PL and keep dropping can go into oblivion. Boro have a limited budget, a small squad, and i think hes working a miracle there keeping them remotely competitive and stable

Morgan Whittaker turning up and laying a fat goose egg really did him no favours. Thought he was doing well with them after a few sales of key players from his first year.

He won't be out of work long.

Boro fans have been calling for him to be sacked since last season, not getting play off this year killed him. When you see Luton & Ipswitch even Sunderland who are not far out of the third tier like Ipswitch going up it's understandable, but I do think a lot of championship clubs need to accept at least 2 of the 3 promotion places will go to teams that have been relegated from the PL the year before

He actually had a good win percentage so i'm sure he'll pick up another job pretty easy when it comes around.

United should add him as a coach to work with the midfielders

The problem with adding him as a coach is the same problem Erik had with Ruud on the sidelines. There'll be immediate speculation that he's the contingency plan as soon as things get a tiny bit rocky.

Besides, he's surely looking for another managerial role.

You can't turn turd into gold. Carrick was a great midfielder in his own right but he is not a sorcerer. United need to purchase quality central midfielders. Current ones are simply not good enough.

You mean like we had Ruud working with the strikers at the start of this season?
Well I think it’s been proven that Ruud should do something else. Carrick has actually proven himself
Anyways post was somewhat tongue in cheek as he’s coached here before and people slagged him and McKenna as not knowing what they were doing

Yeah but Ipswich went and got some solid lower PL standard players when they went in to the Championship, they are playing with a bit of money and they had momentum, Middlesbrough on the other hand sold off their best performers from Carrick's first year and didn't build on the playoff finish, infact in terms of squad quality they probably went backwards in what they gave to him.

Basically, Middlesbrough fans are stupid.

My god could we do with a 25 year old Michael Carrick in our midfield now.

I thought that was the case too. Feels like they could be in for a shock next season and regret parting ways.

We loved to shit on him when he first joined
I mean, he was pretty much Roy Keane's replacement. I don't think any player in the world would have been able to fill those shoes adequately. Obviously he won people over with his own qualities over time though.

It took ages for this place to warm to him and he still got shite even when he was good. Fletcher was the same, everyone in hindsight remembers him fondly but I recall boos when his name was announced in a game against Villarreal or Valencia.

I recall Boro fans moaning about him during the season, they don't think he's that good but I thought he did alright overall.

10th in the league despite seeming to sell their best 2 or 3 players every summer. Thought he was doing alright tbh.

It was a weird one with Carrick. I remember loving him after the 7-1 vs Roma, but there was a lack of appreciation from fans including myself for a couple of seasons after that. Hargreaves got more praise than him in 07-08 and that seemed in part due to him running around more.

It was the 09-10 season when Fletcher seemed to finally get his flowers.

Spoke to a Boro fan at work and they said Carrick is slow to respond tactically in matches when stuff isn't working. Apparently they had chances to sign players like Steven Fletcher who might have done well at that level and it was turned down by Carrick.

As in the 38 year old striker?

He might take a break at this point and consider his options. I remember when he left here he was wanting to take some extended time out with his family and he only took the Boro job due to his links to the area. He needs to avoid the Rooney trap of grabbing the first thing he is offered and wait for a good situation to present itself, his reputation is pretty solid as most would agree he has done a decent job of remaining competitive despite losing his best players on a regular basis.
