Spring training has started, so lets get some predictions and discussion!

Are the Red Sox going to be less crap? Are the Mets finally going to stop wasting de Grom's talent and actually hit some balls?

By this point United have always strarted to disapoint, so the baseball season starting is the perfect distraction, this year seems to be no different, so thank god its back.

Don't see the Yankees doing anything this year. Dodgers the team to beat.

Yeah don't think the Yankees have done enough, the rotation could fall apart at any time, Cashman is starting to be on borrowed time.

Padres will be interesting, see if they can actually turn that talent into a winner.

Opening Day was yesterday. Anyone see that bizarre play where Bellinger hit a long fly that the LF caught but crashed into the fence and lost the ball over the fence? Technically, a homerun per rule, however, Turner was on first and thought the ball had been caught, and instantly rounded second back to first. In doing so, he passed Bellinger and thus a weird rule meant this was an rbi single credited to Bellinger who was also counted out.

Also, anyone hear about the Rays splitting their home season in the coming years? Believe it's been shot down before but seems to be more likely going forward.

Watched the Astros-A's game last night. Must admit I had no idea about the rules but the slow paced action was a nice change from the other high octane sports I usually watch.

The Astros won the game comfortably in the end. Are they one of the better teams in the league?

The Astros are one of the better teams a lot of people are picking them to win the AL West this year. They went deep into the playoffs last year and of course 'won' the World Series a few years ago. Most hated team in baseball, if you're going to follow a team I wouldn't recommend them.

I gravitate towards the Astros because the Rockets fans I interact with are also Astros fans. Will follow the season as a neutral to see who and what team strikes a cord, or I might just follow the sport generally as a neutral. I'm mostly familiar with the Astros at the moment though :D

Ohtani just pitched the first innings throwing 101mph fast ball and then batted in the bottom of the first hitting the first pitch he faced for a 450 feet HR. Unreal shit

Unbelievable talent. Let's hope he can stay healthy.

I suppose this will be a regular thing whenever the Astros go on the road?

So you can only score runs when your team is batting. Is the pitcher like a specialised position or does every get a go qt pitching and batting?

In the national league there are 9 defensive positions and 9 spots in the lineup filled by the same players, so the pitchers take a turn hitting.

In the American league, the pitchers don't hit and instead there is a designated hitter who takes their spot and only hits but doesn't play defense.

Pitchers are very bad at hitting so the American league has more offense than the national league.

Thanks mate.

I'm going through the initial excitement people get when getting into something new. I've spent most of the morning reading about baseball, the Astros and watching all the highlights from last night.

How long does the attacking team stay attacking? Until there are no more players left to bat?

Till they make 3 outs. The visitors get 3 ours in the top half of each inning. The home team gets 3 outs in the bottom half of each inning. A standard game is 9 innings and if they are tied they keep adding innings until someone wins.

Sorry for the 21 questions mate, but is it like the NFL where they swap between the defensive and offensive teams. Would someone like Altuve take up a defensive position when the other team is batting?

All 9 players play both offense and defense except for the pitcher / designated hitter in the American league as stated above

BJ’s started a lot slower than I had hoped.

Starting pitching is as much as a problem as EVERYONE knew it would be.

It's so fascinating how pro sports clubs in the US can hold cities/municipalities hostage for lavish ballparks/stadiums, mostly if not fully funded by taxpayers.

And taxpayers rarely get to know how much they’re on the hook for in these deals.

Tbf though some investments work out; the DC Chinatown area used to be a dodgy spot back in the early 90s but they they built the arena down there for the Bullets and the Capitals and soon after the area was transformed with some really nice pubs, restaurants and hotels. The tax revenues have skyrocketed for that area.

I always thought the NBA having an 82 game season somewhat dilutes the intensity and importance of each game, but 162 games. Big yikes. That's a lot of baseball to watch.

I'm going to completely forget about football tonight and enjoy the Astros demolish the Rangers.

Top quality tantrum, that.

Have been watching quite a bit of baseball lately despite not having the first clue about it until very recently and learning the little I do know from OOTP (baseball FM). It definitely shares that oddly captivating/soothing quality of other sports that ought to be objectively boring, like snooker and test cricket.

Join the club haha. I started following it about three weeks ago after getting into MLB The Show.

It does seem quite pleasant doesn't it.

It's unexplainable, I don't think that I could refuse to watch a baseball game. You don't even have to focus on it full time.

I have it on in the background most days while I'm studying or doing other things tbh, unless the Astros are playing. I never thought anything of that habit until just now.

In the original ballpark in Arlington, the one before the current and prior versions, we would take binoculars and look over the freeway to the big water park and barely watch the game.
