It was a silly comment to make, particularly about a team that he's supposed to lead into the Euros this summer. Their mentality got them results against higher ranked opponents to even qualify. Most of their players were amateurs or part timers playing for amateur teams until a couple of months ago - though the national team have now been given full-time contracts to prepare for the Euros.
Last night they played against a team of full-time professionals, who all play for the top handful of teams in professional Leagues. England beat NI 5-0, goals scored at 26, 52, 60, 70, 79 minutes. They didn't concede from the kickoff, or because they were still in tears over the last mistake. They got cracked open slowly by a much stronger team and yes, probably lost some of their self belief and drive as tiredness set in.
Of course emotion plays a part in football. Plus some teams are good at damage limitation, at hunkering down at 3-0 to avoid the 4/5/6 goal defeat, but that can be a matter of experience and culture. Some teams can't do it. Brazil lost a WC SF 7-1.
Sometimes a team knows they're massive underdogs and gives up, but more common are the teams who prepared themselves for a personal cup final, and try too hard to score - even if it's only a consolation goal for the fans to cheer. It's one of the thing that makes football mad at times, but it's not about women getting more emotional.
