kept out of the team by Jack Cork and Steven Davis in the last match

that being said, I do rate him. Wouldnt buy him on his own though, we need more power in the centre of the park. Its crazy to suggest getting him ahead of the likes of Carvalho. We need to compete in the centre of the park again, not stay passive.

He was injured on the 15th of March and is being eased back, coming on against Newcastle was his first game. Crazy to suggest he'd ever be left out for any other reason

Well Carvalho is a lot younger for a start. There are also very few of us that have seen him play much and certainly not over an extended period of time. Only the Portuguese league watching posters could tell you if and how much better he is right now.

Really like this guy. It wouldn't be a popular target probably, because everyone seems to want top level-proven players this summer (which is funny considering Shaw and Carvalho seem to be popular targets) but I'd be happy for a signing like this alongside a more creative centre-midfielder with goal threat, if Gundogan was deemed too much of a risk.

In terms of proper footballers - footballers who are good at the ball-playing part of football - he's right up there in the Premier League.
He's not the quickest around (not the slowest either), but he can move with the ball, he's very calm and composed, has a great passing range, and a bit of steel to him.
The brain is there alongside the technique. Pretty similar to Carrick, with added mobility and more ability to dribble.
He's had time playing under Pochettino's pressing game, so he's got that to his game too.

Some don't like these videos, and it's only the one, but here we are:

I've heard we are in for Lars Bender again this summer but if that doesn't materialise this guy should without a doubt be our next target. Some gooners would even prefer Schneiderlin because you know he is ready for this league and you know what you are getting. With Bender he'll have to adapt to the league and play in a different role to what he is used to but a role he can probably excel in.

It's a shame he plays for a club that isn't known that much in France. After the PSG duo and Pogba, I think he's the best french CM available. Deschamps prefers to call up an average player like Guilavogui

Lovren used to play for Lyon, in the CL and for his national team. Not much of a discovery tbh, his performances have been surprising tbh. He was a bit of wreck in his last season in France.

Bumped a thread not long back on Schneiderlin.

Instead of taking a gamble on an unproven 37M player from the Portuguese league in Carvalho, i'd go in for this guy in the Summer. In my opinion, he's someone we could do with. He's a great tackler, reads the game well, quick across the ground, presses well and is decent on the ball. He'd be great in a double pivot with a more creative player like Gundogan or Rakitic, in my opinion.
I like him I do. I'd definitely have him.

He's probably not good enough for us under the Cabaye ruling because he doesn't play for a top club.

Yeah, it wouldn't be a popular target more than likely.

I'd say Cabaye wasn't right for us because (a) his technique has never fully convinced me, personally (b) he's in that weird 'not quite an AM; not quite a CM' bracket of midfielders, which is fine for a certain system (like Liverpool's and Newcastle's) - but we already have Mata as a proper AM.

Schneiderlin is just a pure centre midfielder.
It's always about getting the right player, not the player with the right name.
Who'd have expected Dante to have such a big impact at Bayern? He came from a lower team - he was the right player though.

Yeah but he plays for a foreign club. So he's automatically better. For the record I really rate Schneiderlin too and would be happy to see us get him.
You're always looking at PL players to poach. Before this season I though Nzonzi and Schneiderlein were close but no cigar for a physical presence in CM (better than Wanayama mind you).

Yes please. I think it was the Sunday's Gossip thread, where I was saying how I think he'd be a really good signing for us.

I wont be surprised if we get two DMs. If we're sticking to 4-2-3-1 (which would make sense considering we've got a team of no 10s), we would need at least 4 DMs. Fellaini is pretty average in that role, Carrick is in decline, Fletcher has his chronic illness and Clev is not a DM.

4 out and out defensive midfielders is complete overkill. What you need is midfielders capable of defending but who bring different aspects to the table.

For example, we clearly lack pace and drive to our midfield, as well as technical ability. Heck we even need a tackler given our options tick so few boxes. So there's all those considerations. Simply having 4 "numbers" there withnot enough qualities covered isn't good enough. For me, we've got loads of midfield options with barely anyone who does anything superbly. They're all decent too good players who keep things ticking but nothing stands out about their game. Carrick in top form has positioning and can pick out a pass but he's been terrible this season and is ageing anyway.

I would love to see compelled overhaul the midfield the next 2 years.

I am not saying that we should bring 4 Tiotes. What I am suggesting is 4 players who are more specialised in defending then attacking and who would provide us with the necessary composure and steel to be able to play with 4 forwards. A young version of Carrick (with more pace) would be greatly appreciated.

Good player and he has kept on improving since Southampton have won promotion. He is good on the ball, makes intelligent runs and isn't afraid of the tackling aspect of the game.

I would take Schneiderlin over Carvalho, he is a bit more smooth on the ball and has better passing. I see a lot of Carrick in Schneiderlin. He is only 24 and proven in the PL.

The better player, for half the price.

The player we should've went for instead of Fellaini. Not too expensive and could become a great asset to this squad. Don't know if he is good enough to be our starting DM. Honestly right now he'd be probably our best CM/DM.

Don't think that Schneiderlin is better than Carvalho. Carvalho is 22 years old and shows so much promise and improvement this season. For a reasonable price I'd much rather have Carvalho

Well if Sporting insist on the full buyout clause then his price becomes highly unreasonable . Getting Schneiderlin for £15m less will represent better business since we have other areas we need to strengthen as well . For me it's the guy that plays alongside the DM that we should spend a fortune on ! For our immediate needs Schneiderlin ticks most boxes for the more defensive cm .

Not as good as last season, his value dropped a little. Lyon has struggled a lot this season and as their captain he's been ok but not that good. I think he badly wants to get out of there even if he'll never say it.

They won't, according to the resident sporting fans. The club hope that a bidding war ensues, but if there is none, then we can probably get him for a cut price. We should have gone for Schneiderlin instead of Fellaini, but we didn't. If we go for him now, Southampton will probably ask for ridiculous money unless there is a release clause, just like Everton did. Sporting on the other hand need the money, so as long as a bidding war does not ensue, we could get him for less than his release clause.

"Proven in the PL" doesn't necessarily count for much, does it? Fellaini was certainly PL proven but that doesn't mean he was actually good enough to make the step up here.

I feel the same way about Schneiderlin as I did about Cabaye. He'd be a damn fine addition as long as long as we also have room to sign the real top quality we need. This would probably mean someone like Fletcher leaving though, which would be a bit of a shame.

I agree 'Premier League proven' should rarely enter the discussion.

But the difference between Schneiderlin and Fellaini, and even Cabaye, is that he's a proper, well-rounded footballer.
Fellaini is limited in his technique (not to mention his reading of the game); Cabaye is a goal threat, but he isn't a proper centre midfielder, and I don't rate his technique beyond that of James Milner.

All of the actual ball-playing parts of playing centre midfield- Schneiderlin is beyond both by a distance. And he seems to have a greater reading of the game too.
Having someone like him in the centre, who can confidently control the ball at any height, just means that the team can do so much more and play a more varied game.

I don't even think he'd be just a squad player here.

I don't understand this, first him not being a proper CM when it's only with Pardew's weird system (him playing advanced) that he has never played as a CM his entire career. At Lille, for France and now at PSG he's as much as a CM as they get. His technique is better than Milner's, he has a better passing range. I've never seen Milner make that beautiful long pass Cabaye did last night to Cavani.

I just think Cabaye isn't the most well-rounded midfielder. He's only a real stand out in the role he played for Newcastle. He's most effective when given the freedom to roam (like Fabregas at Arsenal) by two guys behind him.
And because of this, I don't think he'd suit the 2 in a 4-2-3-1 behind Mata for example - Whereas Schneiderlin would.

It wasn't a dig at Cabaye or Milner.
I think Milner at Villa (not the restricted player he is at City) was pretty good, and showed a very similar ability and technique to Cabaye, personally.
I'd probably agree that Cabaye is slightly more technical.

He brings goals and assists to the table, but I don't think he has that smoothness to his game, and I don't know if without the goals (which would be reduced in a deeper role) he's anything special.

Fair enough as it's your opinion. I think Cabaye would have been good for Utd, at PSG he's wasting and stalling his progress.

Either would have been a better signing from both a football and financial perspective . The sad facts in this are :
a) Moyes would have known about them comsidering that he managed in this league
b) he knew all about Fellaini since he'd been his manager
c) what we spent on Fellaini could have gone a long way towards buying thr two of them or we could have bought one of them and a decent leftback with the remainder .

I really didn't want us to sign Cabaye as I thought we should be aiming higher. Unfortunately, if I had the choice, I would have him over Fellaini any day. Cabaye became a-bit of a Caf darling last year and was massively overrated on here, to quite a painful extent actually.

He is very much a CM, though. Just a pretty average one that doesn't really excel at anything in particular.

I've always been in favour of signing Cabaye as he always seemed to step up another gear when playing against the top teams, which is something we've been lacking for quite a while, and as average as people seem to think he is, he was always been linked with Arsenal and eventually made the transfer to PSG, both teams which have better midfield then us, so the question would be, are we overrating him or are we overrating our midfield?

Cabaye was a very well rounded CM in his first seasons at Newcastle. He was their main tackler as well as their passer, chipping in with a few goals. When they moved him forward he scored more goals and did less defending

Exactly, him playing more advanced forced him to be too creative and he's never been that kinda player. You get the best of him as a proper CM.
