non story, desperately trying to stay relevant.
Spurs were bottom of the league six months after that league cup win and aswell as sacking Ramos they also ripped up the whole football infastructure by sacking Comolli aswell.Trophies are great, but it doesn't guarantee people look back on that manager's time fondly. Are Spurs fans looking back at the glory years under Juande Ramos because he won a league cup? Are Birmingham fans worshiping Alex Mcleish for the league cup win?
I also don't buy the idea that winning a trophy is a springboard to greater things, and it somehow breeds this mythical "winning mentality" that leads to future success. Birmingham, Wigan, Portsmouth, Spurs have all won trophies that amounted to no further success. Arsenal's recent FA cup wins have done nothing for their progression towards competing for the league/CL again and they've just got worse since they broke that trophy drought under Wenger a few years ago. Mourinho's time at United could have ended in a bottom half finish just a short time after the league cup and Europa double.
didnt they get a bye as wellSpurs were bottom of the league six months after that league cup win and aswell as sacking Ramos they also ripped up the whole football infastructure by sacking Comolli aswell.
Of course it worked out well in the end with getting Redknapp in but league cup certainly didn't push them on the next season.
I think Mourinho is just thinking it will given he won the league title in both seasons at Chelsea and europa at Man. United after winning league cup in each of those seasons.
Chuckling at how little Spurs will have done to make the final. Fair enough Chelsea was a pretty good win but all they've had since is Stoke and Brentford at home. Reminds me of us last season when we played Wolves and Liverpool under 12s in successive rounds but we at least had to get past a decent Leicester team over two legs in SF.
At least they'll be made to sweat against one of the Manchester clubs in the final.
Would you take winning the league cup if it mean finishing 5th. And not winning the europa. We're also talking a team which hasn't won a trophy in over a decade and a slightly (to put it mildly) narcissistic man who has a hard fought and totally justifiable reputation of winning trophies, which he has done at every club. And if you want to count the EL as a big trophy, a big trophy at every club he's been at.
Yes we stagnated under Poch in the end but let's be frank, Jose has been brought in to win something. It may be 1 or 2 trophies only, they may only be league cups but if he leaves after 3 seasons, having only finished in the top 4 each season, I would count that as a relative failure tbh, unless he had really revolutionised the squad and it looked ready to take off.
This is his biggest game so far at the club and if we get through, the final will be bigger still. If we progress through the FA cup and EL or even manage to keep pace with the leaders in the league, then other games from those competitions will be much bigger.
They'd have smashed Orient 5-0 or something. Luck of the draw sometimes I guess.didnt they get a bye as well
no one knows that do they. Was a nice freebie to get through without even playing. They'd have smashed Orient 5-0 or something. Luck of the draw sometimes I guess.
That would be Moyes.Jose really did a number on you guys didnt he? Most disliked ex-manager you've had since Big Ron?
yeah, not even close. That would be Moyes.
I personally like Jose, I like his trolling and meltdowns.
Same here. Despite all the shit LVG and Mou put us through I'm still fond of their time here. Moyes on the other hand, total disaster. The only season I will never want to look back on or have any memories of it whatsoever.yeah, not even close.
Jose is like a pantomime villain.
Jose went full Jose at United, and he was 100% toxic at the end, and needed to go. However, he’s still charismatic and a great personality to have in the game. I just wouldn’t want him at United.
Moyes on the other hard... I actually despise him, and he’s a stain on our club history.
I didn't say they were. But they improved hugely under him under a small budget. Even reached a CL final. Everyone knows he did a really good job at Spurs even if he failed at winning a trophy. They weren't relegation candidates, Spurs finished 6th, 5th, 4th, 5th, 4th in the 5 season before Poch arrived.
Spent close to 350 million on transfers which I wouldn't call a small budget. His European record outside of that CL final appearance was average at best which included a few early exits from the Europa league.I didn't say they were. Sounds like you know him very well!Yet another thread on what Jose says.
I am not sure if people don't get it. Jose says whatever things he believes will fire-up his players to bring their ace game.
It can be things like this or abuse some of his players in public or criticize his club.
It may not make sense. Maybe ridiculous. Cheap, dirty, whatever. He doesn't care as long as it brings the intended consequence.
That is textbook Jose.
Why look outside of a CL final appearance? For a club like Spurs reaching a final is unimaginable. They spent very little considering sales and improvement made under him. Much of their spending was done in the last year anyway and he had done a terrific job before that.Spent close to 350 million on transfers which I wouldn't call a small budget. Because that CL final appearance was a once off and Poch got the rub of the green in the group stages and against both Ajax and City on route to that final. Plenty of that money spent was in his first 3 season at the club. Why look outside of a CL final appearance? For a club like Spurs reaching a final is unimaginable. I don't know why people are unable to give other teams/managers credit. Our own ex players like Neville and co are able to.
They usually are? Rub of the green. Everyone needs that.Because that CL final appearance was a once off and Poch got the rub of the green in the group stages and against both Ajax and City on route to that final. Plenty of that money spent was in his first 3 season at the club.
His domestic cup record was 1 final appearance in 11 attempts, Jose can equal that by winning this evening.
Indeed but the problem was they used up all of that rub of the green before the final. They usually are? Rub of the green. Everyone needs that.
League cup final and CL final are not the same thing.
Come on. Let’s not trying to be harsh here. The reason why they hired Jose is to win this trophy or EL. Something that Poch couldn’t do it. Big trophies like PL & CL were never their expectation.Mickey Mouse cup. Can’t see the Spurs fans getting over excited about that.
Agreed they haven’t won any silverware in 13yrs but that statement is surely over the top?
Is this another one of his attempts to draw attention to himself? Is it genuine? Tactical reasons?
Spot on. Sensible post.He is right, this is a chance to win a trophy. This is the only trophy Tottenham stand a chance of winning, so it would be huge for them. The same as United winning the Champions League. For Spurs, Villa, Everton et al, the League Cup is as mighty as it gets (objectively). We all know any team can win any competition they enter (Leicester bloody went and won the league), but as mentioned, objectively speaking. Mourinho will be gone in 1-2 years tops, so if he wants to bolster his trophy cabinet this is the chance. With that being said, they will play a better team in the final and most likely lose.
Moyes is the most hated manager since Atkinson by far. As much as Mourinho is u likable and gets laughed at on here, I think he's seen as a nuisance and narcissistic. With Moyes, there seems to be visceral hatred.Jose really did a number on you guys didnt he? Most disliked ex-manager you've had since Big Ron?
Pochettino got to the league cup final in his first full season in charge of Spurs aswell.Because that CL final appearance was a once off and Poch got the rub of the green in the group stages and against both Ajax and City on route to that final. If I saw Moyes in the street, I’d actually tell him how much of a complete tool he is, how hated he is and how he needs to apologise for what he did.Moyes is the most hated manager since Atkinson by far. It's the internet. If someone makes the most sensible point in the history of the world you'll find someone online reacting with mockery, outrage or anger. Not that Mourinho's point was quite as sensible as that.I don’t understand the problem with what he said. I remember he prioritised winning the league cup with both us and Chelsea. It’s important, and especially so considering Spurs usually win the square root of feck all.
I think you represent the general consensus around hereIf I saw Moyes in the street, I’d actually tell him how much of a complete tool he is, how hated he is and how he needs to apologise for what he did.
With Jose, I’d love to have a proper chat with him, he’s very charismatic and knowledgable.
I’d probably steer clear from LVG as he’s clearly nuts. I certainly don’t dislike him at all. Massive personality, even though his football will send you to sleep.
His one and only domestic cup final appearance and losing it to Jose.Pochettino got to the league cup final in his first full season in charge of Spurs aswell.
That's definitely it. And when they beat Brentford (against all odds of course) it will be all because of "the special one". This will obviously be a bigger achievement than Poch getting to the Champions League final. In fact, beating Brentford will now trump Mourinho's greatest ever achievement before of leading United to a 2nd place finish in the league...Mickey Mouse cup. Can’t see the Spurs fans getting over excited about that.

I mean, for most of us, our opinion on José is the same as it was before he came here. That's why some of us never wanted him in the first place.Jose really did a number on you guys didnt he? Most disliked ex-manager you've had since Big Ron?
Personally, I don't look down on any competition, really. I want to win whatever we can. Winning the league cup in 2017 was nice, and the final itself against Southampton was fun.I think as a United fan it’s easy to overlook the importance of trophies like this to most clubs. It’s easy to write it off as “mickey mouse” with 20 league titles, most of which are in fairly recent memory , 3 European Cups etc but for fans of clubs who haven’t won a trophy in decades, it’s a chance to make history. Mou is bang on and I can’t imagine many Spurs fans will disagree.
Although what he said is true but you'd just have to wonder if he will say the same thing if Spurs are up against a much tougher opposition tonight. It's his first semi final since being at Spurs, of course it's his biggest. Then if they get to the final that will be the biggest.
Not sure what he is meant to have said that's controversial?
