Interesting. You could definitely feel like the two sports were going in the opposite directions in the last decade or so
Agreed. For a long time MLB was clearly number 2 in the pecking order, and the the NBA number 3. However it was inevitable that the NBA was going to overtake it, given that the league and sport in general are far more appealing and ‘cooler’ to younger people, have the huge advantage in terms of social media, greater global appeal (you could argue that basketball is the second biggest sport in the world), and considerably more individual star power. Baseball matches are too low octane and long for many people nowadays. Talk shows like First Take and the Undisputed mostly cover the NFL and NBA (usually Tom Brady and Lebron are mentioned every day), and hardly mention MLB at all, unless there is a racism or drugs scandal.
It might take 20 years or so, but I wonder if the NBA can eventually overtake the NFL in the USA. Basketball is a much cheaper and more accessible sport than American football, which also has the issue of concussions and parents not letting their kids play it. NBA players are generally and already much bigger stars than NFL players, as there are significantly fewer players on a basketball court / NBA roster so they have have the ball more, and don’t wear face covering helmets.
The major advantages that the NFL have is a much shorter schedule where ‘less is more’ and every game matters. Many NBA regular season games are a waste of time and sometimes the playoffs can feel like they drag on as well. Also there is obviously far more parity in the NFL, meaning that a much higher percentage of NFL teams move the needle in the USA and attract interest and debate. NFL matches will attract huge TV ratings regardless of who is playing. Even NBA finals or conference finals TV ratings can fluctuate hugely depending on who is playing. Most NBA fans don’t care about at least 20-25 out of the 30 teams in the league, while considerably more people care about middle of the road or weaker NFL teams than NBA ones.
