Make it huge, make it accessible, make it distinct (I think all the modern stadiums prefer a bowl so the rectangle facade is probably gone but you can hopefully save some of the old style at least). Make sure the catering is great, the seats are comfortable with legroom (but still right by the pitch), and the other “little” things are taken care of.

according to the Athletic, our budget is £2 billion. By contrast, SoFi (which apparently Ratcliffe wants to emulate) cost $5.5 billion between 2016 to 2021. Not sure how we can spend half the money to get something of a similar standard. That makes me nervous.
From what I understand, the $5.5b figure also includes the cost of the Hollywood Park which consists of the hotel, retail space, YouTube theatre, etc

Also, the stadium costs ballooned due to having to dig nearly 100ft underground due to restrictions imposed on it by the aviation administration, delays due to covid and labor shortages. It is also designed to withstand earthquakes which also adds to cost.

The Intuit Dome costs $2b and has a capacity of only 18000 but is very fancy with lots of lots of over-the-top features, like charging point for every seat, boat load of restrooms, carbon neutral, solar energy + battery storage etc. It makes the Sofi look like good value for money.

I think our stadium will definitely be the best in Europe, considering it costs £2b (probably closer to £2.5b when it's done) for the stadium alone, but will it be as fancy on the interior as the Sofi or Intuit? I doubt it and it's not really trying to be that, instead focusing on proximity to pitch/acoustics etc. A lot of the stadium's appeal also depends on the surroundings and what gets built alongside it (like COSM, Fan zones) and how hard United are willing to go in that area.

A proposed new, fast connection railway line was announced today from Manchester Piccadilly-Liverpool.

Adjacently related to new stadium plans as the Piccadilly-Liverpool Lime St. route currently goes past OT? Mind you, we should have built the new stadium by the time this happens.

There was already talk about shifting the freight rail from around Old Trafford up towards the North of the city. This could shift a lot of the passenger rail away from Old Trafford as well I'd assume.

Do we have the money? Until now it's still not clear where the funds will come from. The only thing we know is that we are more than a billion in debts.

It will require funding clearly. I don’t see this as an issue at all.

I wouldn't trust Ratcliffe to deliver on this for one moment.

The stadium announcement was cynically timed to distract everybody from the 2 rounds of redundancies and penny pinching measures.

The club debt is enormous, Ratcliffe has lost 25% of his personal wealth and if he is to be believed without his hacking of the overhead United would have had zero cash by seasons end.

But don't worry look over here, we are gonna build a £2bn stadium.

He's a conman, I wouldn't believe him any more than I would a car salesman, Owen Oyston or Donald Trump.

You make it sound like Ratcliffe just cobbled together some drawings of a new stadium the night before

I'm inclined to agree with this.

Ahh yes, piss off the fans even more than they’re already are. That’ll work.

Don’t know why fans are so cynical to the point where they believe a stadium is a made up PR spin?

Don’t forget this stadium plan was first devised way before the redundancies. Unless you’re going to be super cynical and say that they were planning this ‘PR stunt’ months in advance?

As if he's not aware it wouldn't come all crashing down when a new stadium is in fact not built. Nonsensical to think it's a PR stunt.

None of this matters in this case though. The stadium would need funding and I would assume there would be no problem at all acquiring it.

Especially as infrastructure isn't linked to PSR, so that money can come from owners, sponsors, people's council tax ( ;) )etc.

We've only seen concepts... Truth is we don't have a clue what it will look like. Apparently Ratcliffe likes this tents but that doesn't mean they'll be a part of the design. Nor do we know whether it'll have two, three or more tiers. Basically we don't what it'll look like or even if it'll get built.

Is this post parody? We pretty much know how it’ll look for the most part. Also it’s not Ratcliffe who likes tents and it’s not even a fecking tent either. It’s designed by arguably the best architect on the planet but hey what would he know?

We've seen mock ups, images, videos, presentations, models, we've even had the architect describe the design choices in detail.

But no, we don't akchullyy know what it'll look like.

"It’s worth bearing in mind that the tent design we saw in London is only ‘conceptual’ but Sir Jim Ratcliffe seems very keen on it.

If it gets made I suspect it'll be scaled down and a lot different to the concepts.

But do carry on as per usual....

We've seen two tiers, some pictures with three tiers, a stadium with single tier goal ends and mock ups with double tier goal ends. They're only concepts.

Wait and see. But this probably isn't happening.

Piss off the fans? I don't think he gives a flying feck about the fans. What makes you think he does? He needs simply to be seen to be doing things - like Trump does. Before long they'll be good reasons not to do it, possibly as soon as 11pm tomorrow evening.

I’m astounded you both think it’s all smoke and mirrors.

Don’t forget Man Utd are on the New York Stock Exchange & things like new stadiums affect the share price and what not.

This is not all smoke and mirrors “just to appease the fans”

I am astounded you are so convinced this will happen.

Because all roads point towards it, are you that cynical that you think everything the club puts out has an hidden agenda.

No doubt all the time, money and effort wasted on hiring consultants, designers, campaigning hard with the government to get some funding. They do alllll of that, “just to appease the fans” ??

I didn't say it was all smoke and mirrors. I've no idea what goes on behind the scenes. We'll just have to wait and see whether it'll happen.

He talks a great game, to be fair.

It may not happen but nobody hires a world class architect, Seb Coe, Andy Burnham etc. just for a bit of nice looking PR.

The intention is obviously for this to be built. It's entirely possible the cost spirals, they can't fund it, priorities change etc. but it's quite clearly the clubs long term goal.

I think 100k to Sir Norman for some pretty pics isn't probably a bad investment if it takes the heat off you for a while. Remember how many regular staff he'd just sacked and those he was about to. It's all about a look. It's the corporate world - not sure why people think "the club" (Glazer Inc) is so innocent.

This is United, doing all that and then not following through just brings more scrutiny.

"Hello, Lord Coe? Jim Ratcliffe here. Listen I need a favour, I'm getting rid of free sandwiches in the cafe and I need you to pretend to be building a new stadium to take the heat off me. Thanks mate."

We'll see. Let's revisit this in 2028.

I'm inclined to agree with this.
Same. I think it was his speech at the time, or an interview after, where he was putting the ball into so many other peoples courts for this to succeed that its almost guaranteed not to.

It was a prototype of a shell drawn up by a group of architects. It probably didn't even go that deep.

Didn’t go that deep?!?

We’ve gone as far as speaking with the council & the government & hired a firm to design it, don’t know how deep you wanna go before people are convinced

The government are also on board with regeneration of the local area and infrastructure.

But ok Spoony

100K wouldn't get him out of bed!

Yeah we told them do this and we will do that. Heard anything about it since? When are the government starting? This is one the of the balls in other peoples courts I talked about previously.

We hired a firm to do a prototype, the shell. I hardly doubt we are as deep as the interior fully designed, or getting structural engineers involved.

Its phase one of architectural drawings essentially. Just some pretty pictures and models made with it.
