Ferdinand doubt for England, says Fergie

By Joe Bernstein - Last updated at 21:27pm on 22nd March 2008

Manchester United effectively ruled Rio Ferdinand out of England's friendly against France on Wednesday, leaving manager Fabio Capello bracing himself for more withdrawals after today's matches.

Ferdinand, a doubt for Manchester United's game against Liverpool today after missing two games with a back injury, is unlikely to get the blessing of United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to travel to Paris, whatever his role at Old Trafford this afternoon.

Training: Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand

Ferguson revealed: "I doubt whether he will be playing for England, to be honest with you."
The timing of England's friendly in France could not come at a worse time for the managers of the so-called Big Four.
They all play in potential title deciders today and face two important games, including Champions League quarter-final first legs, in the week following the international at Stade de France.
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has already questioned the validity of friendly internationals at such an important stage of the season for club sides and Capello will be anxious to see how many of his players from Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool withdraw after today's games. Almost half of his original squad of 30 play for the top four teams in the country. The 13 are: Rio Ferdinand, Owen Hargreaves, Wayne Rooney, Wes Brown (all Manchester United); Joe Cole, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Wayne Bridge, Ashley Cole, John Terry, Frank Lampard (all Chelsea); Peter Crouch, Steven Gerrard (both Liverpool) and Theo Walcott (Arsenal).

Well this isn't good is it.

Ah well at least if he does miss us he will definitely miss England and he will be ready for the upcoming gruelling fixture list. Always look on the bright side and all that.

He could still play tomorrow and aggravate his back in the 94th minute.
:nono:

:)

Its 6am here. Just 6 and a half hours till we find out the teamsheet!

Imagine we beat the dippers without Rio, it'll be like the 4-0 against the Arse w/out Ronnie.

I just watched the December game again to get myself in the mood.
What a defensive display!
I'm still a nervous wreck, every time we play these buggers.
Even watching the replay 3 months later, ...

We are a better team but Rio was immense, as he has been all year.
He is the reason we have only coughed up 24 goals all season.

Vidic is tremendous - but it's the pair of 'em together that makes us the stingiest defense in all major leagues.

A tie will be fine, but if Rio plays, Torres is gonna be shackled.
And we are gonna have a 5 point lead come Monday.

If he doesn't, I'll be happy with ties all round but fancy us to nick a 2-1 win.

He'll start today,* this is just a plan to keep Rafa on his toes and to make sure he doesn't have to join up with England.

*I hope :nervous:

Am going to bed now, to wake up in 6 hours .. and I'm drunk.

He injured his back while diving for the penalty against Pompey, apparently.

We need him today. He's almost always MOTM against Liverpool.

The one time we've lost to them in the last 3-4 years is the one game he's missed...not good

Shithouse. I'm not confident without Rio. He simply must play.

Yeah, cheers for that Noods :smirk:

He'll play.

It's onm the SSN ticker. Not sure how up-to-date this is though.

Should have team news on MUTV at 1200.

Did Platt just claim that Vidic is out too? Did I just hear O'Shea and Brown as centrebacks?
