Howe only wants to work with (white) British people. He had a sneaky suspicion that both Ashworth and Mitchell were hiding their ancestry and wouldn’t agree to a DNA test.
Reports suggested Ashworth felt impotent there as Howe didn't want him involved. It was part of his argument for wanting to leave and not work his gardening leave.
