Lower teams make up for a lack of quality in CM by signing someone with a bit of bite.

I’d like to see an Ince type in there. Feck, with our current bunch I’d take Scott Parker or Noble

Where actually IS Fred?!

I know he was a bit behind with his fitness but surely he's ready at least as a bench option especially given how short we are in midfield, it would help Pogba out a bit at least as he could be allowed a bit more freedom.

If he isn't even on the bench after the international break surely questions need asking as he presumably isnt on international duty so can make up the 2 weeks he missed at the start of the season, we have less players at training as most are at internationals so surely he can benefit from some more personalised coaching?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Garner have to be thrown in before long, especially if Pogba or McT get injured, I don't really watch the youth games but know he's been doing well for them but general consensus on here is he isn't quite ready for first team yet? I'd rather we didn't rush him into the team if that is indeed the case but I can see us having to due to being so short in that area. Especially for the Europa.

Fred is getting married.

We absolutely need to bed in Fred after his honeymoon or whatever. We are way to thin and we signed him for a reason so he has to have some talent we need to unlock.

I have no issue with the majority of Ole's decisions thus far but his choice to repeatedly leave Fred out of the team is baffling. He is the closest thing to Herrera we have, who is sorely missed in our midfield.

It seems such an obvious tactical change to make from the way are currently playing. Mctomminay and Fred behind Pogba. It solves the issue of Pogba losing possession in deep positions and it also allows us to have our most creative player in Pogba further up the pitch.

Wait, please tell me you are joking?
You don't think Pogba is elite or McTominay and Fred are shit?

Listen, mate. The best way to gauge a players ability is to see what rival fans think of him. It's like how Liverpool fans all think Henderson is fantastic, yet we all know he's bang average. Ask any Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, City or Tottenham fan what they think of Pogba, McTominay and Fred. They will tell you one is good and two are shit, because guess what... One is good and the other two are in fact shit. Yeah, McTominay is an academy lad with a great attitude, maybe he'll develop into a good player, but right now for a club the level of United, he's shit. He would not start for any other top 10 PL club. There's really no two ways about it mate.

City fans think John Stones is a top class centre back for crying out loud, we all know he's mid table level, but they think he's great. Fans have a tendency to overrate their own players. I had to listen to Arsenal fans tell me for years that Bellerin was the best right back in the world and Jack Wilshere was class. Some of our fans still think Luke Shaw is a top left back, we're all guilty of it.

If you don't think McTominay would start for other top 10 clubs then I'm sorry mate, but you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Ok, lets see.

1. City, they play a midfield three of David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne & Rodri or Fernandinho. Safe to say, McTominay ain't getting in
2. Liverpool, regular midfield three of Wijnaldum, Henderson and Fabinho. Obviously no McTom
3. Chelsea, they've a few injuries, but with Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic, Barkley, Mount & Loftus-Cheek, me thinks no starts for Scotty Mac
4. Spurs, they shift between 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1, Ndombele, Alli, Eriksen, Lo Celso, Dier, Winks, Sissoko & Wanyama his competition. Can't see many starts
5. Arsenal, Torreira, Xhaka, Guendouzi, Ceballos would be his competition in a 4-3-3, add Ozil in a 4-2-3-1. Can't see him being first choice here chief.
7. Wolves, they play 3-4-3, and he ain't starting over Neves or Moutinho
8. They play 4-2-3-1 and I can't see him starting over Gomes or Delph, he'd be battling with Davies and Schneiderlin for the back-up spot.
9. Leicester, Maddison, Tielemans, Ndidi. Nuff said.
10. West Ham, his only chance would be starting over Noble, as they won't drop Rice. Would they drop their skipper for our Scott though?

Nah, I'm sticking with it. I actually do have an idea what I'm taking about. Cheers though.

Thing is, you're basically using as argument the fact that these players play for their teams, in order to define the roles that McTominay wouldn't be able to fit into. But if he played for these teams, he'd be used according to his qualities, of which there are several (and they are improving). He wouldn't be a week in-week out starter, probably, but he would get frequent starts for several of these teams. He could replace Dendoncker for Wolves, and would be high in the pecking order for Everton (maybe even battling with Gomes). Could gradually challenge Noble's spot too, I suppose. He'd be a starter for Palace I think. Sheff Utd are top 10 right now, but best not count them. I'd even argue he'd be in contention for several starts at Arsenal and Spurs, maybe even Liverpool, given the mould of central midfielders they are using.

All of this is hard to say and pure speculation, because teams play according to the players they have, but saying he wouldn't start for any top 10 team is taking it too far and disregarding both the progress he's made and how well he played last half of last season.

McTominay isn't shit - to say something like is just stupid. As for your "what rival fans think of him" theory - is just plain dumb. It took Darren Fletcher about 10 years at Professional level before fans of other clubs would admit that maybe he wasn't crap. The majority of fans of other clubs still think of Paul Scholes as very good but not brilliant (like most managers and other footballers thought he was). And how do you think fans of other Clubs rate .. say Park Ji Sung ? We think of him as seriously under-rated - most fans of other Clubs thought of him as bang average.

Some players are unspectacular - McTominay will probably fall into that bracket. Unspectacular players are rarely rated by other fans simply because the average fan don't understand what they bring to the game. A good example is the CWC final against Barcelona - something Ferguson himself mentioned in his book. No one mentioned McClair as having a particularly great game - but Ferguson said he was one of the key players to winning the game because his job in that game was to stop Ronald Koeman from controlling the game. Koeman did nothing going forward until Barcelona got a freekick in the 79th minute.

Oh yes - Henderson isn't fantastic but to call him bang average …. ? Quite!

Thinking about it there are a few Liverpool fans at work who are deluded, in the sense that Henderson is world class and they are "champions"

As I tell them the guy in his late 40s was 19 when Liverpool last won the league, the other isn't old enough to remember :D

Don’t be ridiculous. Mctominay hasn’t even had a full season yet you are so confident he would start for a top 10 club? Let’s him prove himself this season before we make baseless conclusions.

Baseless? He's played every minute of this season for us so far. And - again - he had a very good second half of last season. If people can want Longstaff for 50 mill after like seven games, I wouldn't call that baseless.

Pogba could leave next summer, Fred is not playing and Mctominay is decent.
Do you think we are going to have a new midfield trio next season?

We were linked with a CAM (Eriksen, Fernandes, Dybala, etc). Also, we need a DM to replace Matic. If we sell Pogba, then we could be looking for a new CM.

If we continue playing 4231, what would be your new midfield of 2?
