That was coming, Rooney won't start next week

We were clueless out there. LvG needs to get a game-plan nailed down, right now we are just playing possession and hope the opposition won't create enough chances. Doesn't work against a team like Arsenal, or any other team with quality players in it.

That first 20/30 minutes from Arsenal is the best football I've seen in the Premiership since Liverpool a few seasons ago.

Fast, incisive, deliberate, and every single pass was absolutely inch perfect.

Whatever 11 we fielded, we would have struggled to keep up with them I feel... but I think having a solid midfield (3 in there instead of 2 - which should be par for the course away at the Emirates) would have stopped the wave a little bit.

Negatives
Don't get me started

Positives
We only conceded 3. I thought it would be 6 or more.
We had no players sent off, which at one point looked a certainty.

Set up wrong from the start, effectively out of the game by the 7th minute.
Lessons to learn tactically.
But its just one game, it's how we respond.

Better team won, much better 2nd half, on to the next game.

Horrible result but let's put it into perspective, away to a title contender, any point is a bonus. Especially when you've played a tough match on the Wednesday and they've played on Tuesday.

Ridiculous. Never even looked like getting started in the first half. All over the place defensively, wingers not helping out, Young and Darmien forgetting how to play football (though Young's not a defender so less anger at him). Carrick and Schweini never to start together again because they should only play together to completely close the game up.

Also if people start saying 'yeah but we performed well in the second half' then that's just stupid. Arsenal had won the game already, didn't need to do anything and let us have the ball because everyone knows we play with 0 urgency. I fully expect Van Gaal to say we were too slow to start and lost the game then, but controlled it after so we were good.

Martial was the only player who I thought played well all game, Wilson did good when he came on too.

Pathetic first half and in the second Arsenal just sat back and, as usual, we create next to nothing when a team does that. Excellent performance from Arsenal.

Arsenal were excellent. Did their jobs perfectly.

United are playing with at most 10 men currently (and probably only 8 or 9 depending on who plays). It was a bad day at the office.

I don't judge managers for results like this (one-offs) but I will judge LVG if he insists on playing Rooney/Carrick and a couple others.

-Disgraceful first half.
-Ordinary second half.
-All fart and no shit.
-Rooney finished
-Marital is an amazing talent
-I do not rate Depay and think his attitude is shit
-Bad selection from LvG
-Miss Shaw badly
-Arsenal deserved to win but, they'll still go and lose to a shower of shit next week and Claude from Arsenal TV will go into meltdown again.
- Arsenal beating United 3-0, at home, and their fans are quiet and pack out of the ground early

Up there with some of the Moyes performances

Arsenal were brilliant, no doubt. But to play an old 2 men midfield was just careless as well

Terrible performance and questions should be asked
but ... its not that big a deal. Losing away to arsenal isn't a shocking result.
Recover with a win next match, learn some lessons and move on

First 20 mins was suicidal though

We clearly don't do well against a massive pace/press onslaught, especially when top players like Sanchez are involved. Need to improve that.

Also, thought Rooney and Martial were by far our 2 best players. Same with Valencia when he came on. The rest were awful really.

Our away form is appalling and has been all through Van Gaal's time here.

It's the away form which will cost us winning anything in my opinion.

Bad day at the office all round.

LVG didn't set us up right, we looked tired, we were stunned by Arsenal's unusual intensity and we then totally ran out of ideas to get us back into the game.

Still, it's important to remember that things are still going well overall this season. Early October and we're third, a couple of points off the top. That's a perfectly fine position to be in.

Today was bad and lessons need to be learned but we shouldn't overreact and forget the positives of this season either.
I agree with this

Pretty much agree with it.

Horrible start... Darmian got schooled... Need some back-up at wing backs...

Memphis has been really really poor... He has become a one-trick pony and is struggling to adapt... Needs to increase his work rate and use his brain...

We weren't as poor as the scoreline but Arsenal definitely deserved the win...

Saw glimpses of Rooney getting more involved but he has been a passenger for too long (Memphis too)...

And yeah... Martial didn't deserve to be on the losing side... He had Mertesacker in his pocket... Really exciting...

Only way to field 3 players in midfield is by dropping Rooney... Hopefully that will happen sooner rather than later.

Playing 2 midfielders in big games will keep costing us.

LVG deserves huge bollocking for that setup.

Players deserve huge bollocking for being spineless cnuts.

Fair play to Arsenal, they've done their job in 20 minutes and then sat back, probably could've ended up higher if they weren't such pussies.

No idea why Schneiderlin didn't play. Surely this is the one game of the season he should start above all others?

  • Having 3 30 year olds in cm/num 10 was a bad move
  • Passing it around like we were 3 goals up was a bad move
  • Not Rotating the squad was a bad move
  • Not having any pace was a bad move
  • Not defeding the man was a bad move
  • Not settling down after the first goal for at least one fecking minute was a bad move
  • Not settling down after the second goal was a bad move
Credit to arse they came out and played us off the park and we honestly we were shithouse, a shambolic performance that needs to be reviewed and lessons need to be learnt.

For next games i want to see this
  • A Schniderlin, Basti, Herrera mid field
  • Lingard to get some games to add pace
  • Depay to be dropped for young
  • Jones to cb
  • Blind to LB
Changes need to be made

Two of our back 4 aren't defenders. Arsenal exploited that and well done to them.

I don't know how LvG can pick our slowest midfield combination for a game against the fastest side in the league. Madness.

That sort of start and lack of urgency is still unacceptable

Do you think United played very well and Arsenal needed to play out of their skins to beat us here?

I think Arsenal played out of their skins for 20 minutes and we were dreadful. Hence why they were 3-0 up after 20 minutes... something that hasn't happened to us since 1992 apparently.

I was banned from the matchday thread :(you guys do know there isnt really anything paranormal about me dont you, its just coincidence im sure.

Hopefully LvG has learnt a lesson or two here. Not good enough to just stick with plan A and ignore our weaknesses week after week.

Firstly, congrats to Arsenal on a superb performance. They started brilliantly and finished the game in 20mins. Excellent stuff.

Coming to us. Very poor from start to finish. I won't go overboard as these things happen from time to time but we should tweak our style and system based on the occasion. Schneiderlin should have started today as we needed his energy in the middle.

We just didn't start playing at KO, much like the game at Southampton. Absolutely poor. Had we done so, it would have been a very even game as I don't think there is much between the 2 sides.
