Arsenal 3:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 04 October 2015

You can't play a high line with no pressure on the ball. The work rate from Rooney/Memphis was absolutely shocking at times and Arsenal were walking the ball into our final 3rd.

We got Everything wrong from the start and gave them lots of gaps.

I just don't understand why we risk anything against Arsenal in the opening 10 minutes. We know what is gonna happen - they come flying out with Everything they got. If they don't get a goal - they crumble and we can win. If they do get a goal we have to push forward and leave huge gaps. They win.

As for Carrick and Schweinsteiger - they must never happen again. They are too slow to deal with a club like Arsenal. And Memphis....he is starting to annoy me.

I am going to have a look at City's ticket and merchandise prices and then evaluate my allegiance in the next 24 hours.

First half our midfield were not strong enough, if we started the match with 4-3-3 then I think it would have been an even match. Our midfield did not offer much protection to the defence, weirdly enough, fellaini helped alot in second half. We couldn't handle the speed of the match. Finally Rooney is a weak link in our team. Sloppy and poor. Well played arsenal. Excuses for any grammatical errors, I'm on the beer.

This result was easily avoidable but Van Gaal was too arrogant or stubborn if something is so clearly not working then fix it. Also I just don't get why he decided that going to try and out play Arsenal away made any sense. It was complete suicide.

Very well played by Arsenal. They know we're slow starters and made the most of it, game was over before we'd even realized we were playing.

I hope LVG learns from the selection errors. We can't be going into big games like this.

Second half was at least better but lacking inspiration in attack and incapable of breaking down any decent defence that sits back and plays on the counter.

Bad day at the office all round.

LVG didn't set us up right, we looked tired, we were stunned by Arsenal's unusual intensity and we then totally ran out of ideas to get us back into the game.

Still, it's important to remember that things are still going well overall this season. Early October and we're third, a couple of points off the top. That's a perfectly fine position to be in.

Today was bad and lessons need to be learned but we shouldn't overreact and forget the positives of this season either.

No need to use this much sense. Please panic and be unreasonable.

Full credit to Arsenal. Battered us in the first 25 minutes and could have had more than 3 easily.

Let's not be fooled by the second half performance, it was allowed by Arsenal having won the game early on.

Only Martial can take credit here. Felt Schweinsteiger and Smalling grew into the game but ultimately there were failings across the board and a case of being completely outclassed by the opposition.

Arsenal were brilliant, no doubt. But to play an old 2 men midfield was just careless as well

With our spin of blind carrick bastian mata rooney with very little mobility, it showed never play carrick and bastian together, not factoring in VG failing to strengthen the defense hit us hard today

It's a long season. And getting beaten by top team away this early season isn't a really big deal. Finger crossed that LvG has learned something from today. We couldn't score a fecking single goal against Newcastle is still the worst.

- Carrick and Schweiny too slow against a top team.
- Rooney unsurprisingly was awful again. On the second half though, he was okay. Not great or anything, but he looked like a player.
- Depay is the worst winger we've had since Bebe. Feck knows what will happen in the future, maybe he'll become best ever, but so far he has been awful. If Rooney wasn't so bad, more people would have realized how bad Depay is.
- Fellaini was quite good. He should have started.
...
- Shit happens. It isn't the end of the world. City lost 4-1 against a worse team than Arsenal just a couple of weeks ago, and they bounced back. We can do that too.
- LVG should make some changes to his fecking philosophy. Being slow isn't good under any circumstances. And we are one of the slowest teams I have ever seen in football. Allow to players more freedom and don't try to make 20 million passes per shoot.

Arsenal were superb, outplayed United in every way possible.
United were disjointed, had a bad game-plan with no help from wingers for fullbacks, a midfield with no pace and only Martial up top who shows any sort of technique and threat.
The players who got "wrongly picked" didn't show anything, so it's by no way just the managers fault.

That said, it feels a lot more like a one-off rather than the norm.

apart from first 20 minutes i dont think we did much wrong. we pretty much nailed the second half. Its difficult to see possitives but i think our thin squad kills us today. Fullbacks and defence is paper thin. I think we need to come out of the blocks quicker. we have been coming to the match late. Southampton, liverpool, tottenham and many other games where we start slow. That needs to be better.

Beaten by a much better team, their passing and movement was on another level to ours and we allowed them to do it, that first half was as bad a performance as I have seen and lack of reaction from LVG was shocking.

Arsenal blew us away in the first half and then kept us at arms length in the second, as easy a win as they will have all season, just relieved it wasn't 5 or 6.

Blind shouldn't start at cb away from home unless we have no other option and changes will have to made for Everton game. It's into the end of the world, we are competing to finish top four and have still had a decent start but we need to be able to defend when we don't dominate possession.

This.

Got to have a sense of humour about it. Bad results happen to everyone. As long as we don't bloody repeat it.
Well played Arsenal.

That first 20 minutes we were blitzed. When you make a turgid start like that against a lethal counter attacking team you get punished.

I know we're prone to overrating players when they get injured but having Luke Shaw in that defence would have helped enormously today.

Yep, most certainly - especially with hindsight. I think when the line-ups were announced in the match-day thread before the game most people were happy with the lineup... but yeah, now it's very obvious to see we needed 3 in there.

I guess a lot of people thought we might be able to match Arsenal at football going in, especially with the run we've been on so far... but then I guess as fans we're allowed to have that confidence, and maybe our management should be a bit more shrewd.

Most inept performance as a team this season?

LvG naive with trying to control possession with two immobile center midfielders against the fastest midfield in the league. Carrick not hungry enough anymore and getting on, Rooney being useless as usual. Depay and Mata non existent.

That's what happens when your defense has no cover. They get overrun and get torn to shreds. Seriously disappointed with LvG, he played Fergie's gameplan here last season and won comfortably, this season he tried to dick on Arsenal by trying to play possession football.

Chelsea, while in a massive crisis, beat them without getting out of 2nd gear ffs

West Ham beat them too.....AND AND Liverpool destroyed them and were unlucky not to win

Also, thought Rooney and Martial were by far our 2 best players. Same with Valencia when he came on. The rest were awful really.

Disagree about Rooney. Credit for trying but again very static a lot of time and poor passes and poor touches too often.

Out thought, out fought and out classed. Arsenal were terrific both offensively and defensively, we had no answer and they blew us away before we could respond. We showed a real lack of respect for the opposition today as we opened up so much space in the middle that we exposed Darmian, Young and Carrick. Rooney and Memphis were also very ineffective. Martial was the only one who could hold is head high as he got involved and caused a few problems, perhaps was unlucky not to score.

Defeat is a setback but by no means a disaster. We play Everton next and it is important that we prepare much better for that game than we did today.

WTF is the obsession with playing the ball back all the frigging time and slowing down the play. I mean every single time, recieve the ball don't look up just play it back, someone else will take a risk. And before anyone says anything, it's not a LVG thing its been happening since at least the last season of SAF, it's just exacerbated now that we only have one player with true pace.

Rooney seemed to have found his aggression back. Hopefully he can start with it in the next games.

The mistake was not playing defenders in defence.

Blind/Jones/Smalling /Darmain. That should be the starting defence. The only other change perhaps is play Darmain at LB and Valencia at RB.

...and not play defensive against Arsenal or any other team. This is what was annoying me about van Gaal all season.

last few games we were getting behind defences. We made Arsenal look good. And lets be honest Arsenal are a soft team.

even more painful.

Another thing. We're extremely slow starters. No wonder why but we started too many games too casually. Badly punished today

Played poorly overall and not our day, I firmly believe that we would have been back in it had Martial scored at the stroke of half time. Memphis deserves a special mention. He was absolutely pathetic.

That was coming to be honest. Schweinsteiger and Carrick in midfield, with Blind in cb and a left winger in Young playing left back. I hope Van Gaal realises a few great performances against Villa etc doesn't make Blind Beckenbauer.

We can play him in centre back, but in games where we can expect to dominate.

Arsenal were brilliant those first few minutes though. Kudos to them. Great performance. Sanchez is the kind of player you pay 300k per week for.
