A few takeaways here:
1. We are even better than that performance. The first 15 minutes of the game showed exactly what we can do. After that we had patches of good play. When we attacked, both on the counter and fully in their half, we attacked really well and fluidly. IMO even better than Arsenal did when they had the ball and that's fantastic. We have the solution to the lack of control after that period, that has to do with closing spaces in midfield, which Casemiro can do expertly.
2. Rashford is not a striker, but he can easily compete for the left flank with Sancho. There's going to be real competition on the flanks. Antony looks direct and dangerous, so both Rashford and Sancho will need to be really good there. Rashford was really good in his runs today and his ability to make good decisons has improved.
3. The centre forward position will immensely improve our team. Gabriel Jesus was a major reason Arsenal were such a threat in attack. He was really good today and his hold up play shows you what we have been lacking all season in attack. Martial coming in and Ronaldo getting fitter should solve that issue.
4. Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes. I don't think people realise what we have here. Two brilliant passers, Bruno with almost endless energy and magic; Eriksen with line breaking passes and control. Both of whom can play in midfield, attacking midfield and on the flanks, making us so flexible in games. We ended today's match with Fred as the 10 and Eriksen and Bruno out wide; that is true versatility. It's important because it means we will always have good options in areas on the pitch, something we haven't had in years. No more Lingard, no more Pereira, no more Elanga, no more aging Cavani or Ighalo....just actual talent on the pitch each game.
5. Mctominay has a role in this team. His passing has improved and as a player he seems to be improving. Should he be a starter...No. However he can make an impact in this squad which is something I wasn't expecting.
In summary, we have a really good squad with a team performance that shows clear signs of improvements. This Arsenal team gave us far more of a challenge than I think Chelsea and Spurs would give us, with only City being more of a threat, yet we've come through this period, playing both Liverpool and Arsenal unscathed, whilst having a lot of much easier teams to play at home coming up.
