Chelsea 1:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Given this was a must win game for Chelsea this was close game we just lacked threat.

Which makes the crappy attitudes of Sancho and Rashford unforgivable.

He can’t, but… only other option is to play without a striker (with Mainoo or someone else as a false 9)

I'm not against putting Mainoo up front and bringing Hojlund on as a sub, I think it might work better that way round.

Didn’t know the match was yesterday sounds like a good thing that I missed it

A game we should have probably drawn in a toothless display, away at a ground we normally lose vs Spurs going to Villa and getting properly walked over. Silver lining is we go into the final with the marginally better result/performance.

Not particularly. They had one threatening moment through Reece James outside of their goal. We even had more possession.

Were just completely toothless.

Ignoring Madueke through on goal? Or Gusto’s slip when through?

We had 3 clear cut chances vs 1, 11 shots to 4 and 3 vs 1 on target. Not dominant but clearly the better side.

Not that it matters as we wouldn't have scored if we were still playing now, but there should have been at least another minute played at the end. Play didn't even start in injury time until 91:07, there was another minute or so for the foul on Gusto, then Palmer wasting time over the corner.

Well done we’re 16th
Still maintain we are not far off despite some huge weaknesses in key positions, we can’t score we’ve lost a lot of games by a tight margin. Chelsea weren’t any better but for a brief spell. Just wanted to touch in Ohnana again the header wasn’t that far off him however before it left cucas head he was already on his knees and so it was impossible for him to react. The fact he cannot use his feet is a major failing that I cannot believe we didn’t notice. It makes every low or close to the goalie chance a guaranteed goal.

We had that possession with our CBs, which is no threat at all. Lindelof - 82 touches and Maguire - 72 touches had our most touches, our midfielders had 57 each

Caicedo had 72 touches and Enzo had 57 touches matching Casemiro and Fernandes' 57 touches. Chelsea had 3 shots on target to our 1, they just didnt finish very well. They also had 4 shots blocked by our defenders and wingbacks. We had 1 shot on target with 0 shots blocked by Chelsea players. They didnt need to because we barely got up there to shoot. We had 2 Mount slices wide which were closer to the corner flag than the goal and Bruno and Fernandes missed the target 1 time each. Total shots 11 to 4 Chelsea. Think its pretty obvious

That was Cuccurella making a great well-timed run in between the CBs, not Mazraoui doing anything wrong.
You might want to watch it again see if it changes your opinion. He's literally looking right at him. He should be tracking the runner there for me. He goes to play the offside trap them realises nobody else is.

Each to his own though. His one defence is there was a player behind I guess.

Well if they could be arsed playing to their potential at the club they signed for we would have more points.
"Why did we play poorly against Chelsea yesterday?"
"Because Sancho and Rashford had crappy attitudes."

It probably wasn't the right answer to the question at this time, but if they had performed and we did have more points, therefore more confidence and other teams therefore were more wary of us, our season could have been much different including yesterday against a not particularly impressive Chelsea team. Hojlund has been a big disappointment, those two when they can be bothered could have added so many more goals.

I actually think it's Pogba's fault.

If only he'd lived up to his potential in the league, we'd have won at least 3 titles by now and if he played half as well as that in the CL, we'd have at least 2 of those and every team would've been shaking in their boots before facing us this season.

Refs (and mangers complaining about time being up) do my nut ! 7 mins held up (thats the minimum) Chelsea immediately do a sub to waste time, 2 injuries to chelsea players, including a significant one that took loads of time and a VAR check. Palmer book for time wasting. And a pitch invader which wasted a load of time. And he played 8 mins and a few seconds with Maresca going bananas that time should be called. Total joke. The sooner we have hour games with the clock being stopped when play is stopped the better.

They did play a proper second string back line though didn’t they?

Judging by the comments on here I was one of the few (it seems) relatively encouraged by yesterdays performance.
One slight lack of concentration by Garnacho (more or less after he had just come on) let in Chelsea for the goal. Otherwise for large parts of the game, especially first half we played some decent one touch quick passing movements that nearly caught Chelsea out, and one such movement, except for a protruding shoulder from Maguire would have had us one up and at the time, perfectly justifiable position.

Chelsea are a good side and had something to play for, in particular their wing-backs looked more at home in their roles than ours did, but that didn't happen overnight.

Our main problem is still getting the ball in the net. Holjund, is still taking 2 steps forward then 3 back. Yesterday, he was repeatedly throughout the match on the wrong side of his opponent, failing to control the ball, losing balance at the wrong time etc.
However he does but in hard the yards, albeit mainly at the wrong time. For now if he cannot do anything with the ball, we have to find ways for him to inflict damage on opponents without it.

That is true, but Son looked well off it and the Odobert as 10 experiment (which they’ll likely have to go for in the final) was very very bad.
I didn’t watch it but saw the stats and they were poor creatively. Johnson will be a threat but I don’t really think Richarlison is one to worry about too much. It’s all about that midefiled battle and how adverse United are at scoring goals against PL backlines.

What about Amad, Heaven and Obi, honestly if Saudi were throwing around £125m for Bruno I wouldn't turn that down.
Amad I’d say keep depending on the price. Tbf what about Heaven and Obi? They’re kids that aren’t even from the academy I hope they’ll be good players for us but I wouldn’t be fussed if they left.

That was a nice goal by them blue bastards.
It really was. Any goal that starts with what was aptly described as "a pirouette" is not a run-of-the-mill boring one :)

I think we played quite well, unfortunately we had no one to put the ball in the net, there was an attampt by Amad, but the goalkeeper parried. Honestly I was disappointed with Mount, I was hoping he would continue with scoring goals after scoring twice against Vilbao. I was reflecting on the fact that a team with Onana as goalkeeper and Hojland as striker is bound to get relegated and we nearly did. Next year I dont know, a lot of rumours about signing new players, but from previous experiences, have to wait when it is officially announced. I liked the Kunha rumour for our left 10 in addition to Mount. Like Mbeumo as our left 10 in addition to Amad. Like to have Gyokeres as striker in addition to Delap. Like also to have Cherki added to our midfield. But that will be formidable, but the experience of our signings for the 10 years do not give me any hope that will be posiible.

After the Chelsea lost it, it is imperative to have Mount as a false 9, infront of Garnacho and Amad; play intensively for the first half hour and score two goals and then the team can relax.

I would seriously consider playing Harry Maguire up front on Wednesday if De Ligt is able to play CB
With Deligt injured, Harry will play central defender, but we can still play with11 players by playing either Mainoo or Mount as false 9 and hope that it works.

It's not even worth debating the pro's and con's of a league game for us at this point.

The same flaws as we have had all season since Amorin came in. Slow with the ball - no fight - no leadership - no control - slow with the ball - lazy without the ball

Hojlund is incapable of holding the ball up - he's proven that by now. He's good in the box and good at running the channels. Our solution? Keep lumping aimless long balls at the lad. Should he do better with the majority of chances he has to shield the ball? Of course! But he's never ever going to be that player, so it's baffling to me why we keep trying it.

I got a ticket among some home fans by going with a Chelsea season ticket holder. He asked me not to make it too obvious I am a United fan... have to say there was so little to get excited by except for Harry's non goal, I'm pretty sure no one had any idea!
