I agree with that, there is an "outcome bias" when judging footballers. If you make a brilliant pass that is squandered, it tends to be judged differently than if it result in a goal - even if those two hypothetically were identical. In such a situation, the passer should be judged equally regardless of what the striker does.
The same applies to defenders, a mistake leading to a big chance shouldn't be judged on whether the striker actually buries it. It is a fallacy to think like that, but its a common one imo. I frequently find myself doing the same quite often.
Lets say e.g. the Pogba/Rooney misunderstanding in the first half led to a goal, it wouldn't become worse. Its horrible in either case, and will on average lead to an opportunity for our opponent a fraction of the time.
