Does feel like a couple of factors. This performance was really unusual in the last 18 months. Suddenly we lose our captain that plays every game, get to the end of one of the most fatiguing run of games in football history and have nothing to play for. I wish the players showed more but I'm not that surprised.

Really hope the league drop won't affect the final. It is generally better to maintain momentum before a game like this

That's the worry. Either that or overpay for some overhyped player who everybody but them knows its not needed or particularly great.
Yep, it be either some inexperienced kids or we overpay for someone like Grealish or Kane with our whole budget.

We simply are unable to do the smart, middle ground signings.

Disheartening. That’s 3 dog shit performances in 4 now. Ole always has periods of great followed by periods of awful. I just hope we’re not entering another awful period because losing the final would be a very real possibility. Next game is must win for momentum alone.

The Glazers are set to appoint Ed Deadwood MK2 for our CEO again, so it's all on them.

They need an accountant yes-man, who makes them money. If they got someone like Van der Sar, they won't get on well because he'll demand better.
I would love Edwin here, but as you say it won't happen. I am worried that we supposedly only need 3/4 signings to compete. After tonight I am not sure. Ole has played in these games. He should have had them coming onto that pitch with fire coming out of their ears.

- Terrible defending from set pieces
Just a coaching / reversion to mean thing, they'll fix it. We didn't concede as many set piece goals with the same tactics in 2019/20.

- Total inability to control any phase of a game against a top side. (1 win in 8 against the four directly behind us)
Plenty of wins against big teams in the season before. 1 win in 8, but we've had like 5 draws as well. "Any phase of the game" is nonsense, we're fine in defence, offense, transitioning to defense.

Unless you're excluding everyone bar City / Pool as "top" sides, we do alright at controlling games as well.

- Rubbish passing and recycling of the ball and an inability to keep possession
More possession against every single team that's not City / Pool.

- Can’t handle the high press
Can't handle the City / Pool press. Plenty of teams including PSG, RBL and every mid table team in the PL tried to press us high and got burned.

- Shoehorning players in
Pogba was magnificent on the left since injury. It's not really shoe horning someone to play them in a role they like and are excelling in.

At what stage is somebody going to do something about these things or try and improve them.
These issues can’t keep popping up once a month. They need to be sorted out.
Pray tell when we've been burned by these issues in the past two months.

How bad does Rashford need to be before ole realises he can't play on the right. He makes every 50/50 ball an 80/20 in favour of the opposition with his fairy like effort. It's like he's sulking when he's asked to play on the right. He wouldn't be in my squad for the euros

It will be seen as progress that we got to a final, progress would be winning a final.

I don't understand how this is your conclusion from watching the match.

We played a game two days ago, Maguire injured which means Bailly and Lindelof together, and Liverpool had everything to play for while we did not.

It was a terrible performance but there's not much to learn from this match.
How can we go on about McGuire been injured when you see the injury list they have had for almost the whole season, it is pathetic for a club as big as us to put so much significance on one player missing , real small time mentality.

We've been 3-4 signings away from challenging for 3-4 years. That's because we have one half-decent summer followed up by buying bench players and deadwood like last year.

It all stems from the American leeches. They go, we install a proper football structure with competent people (not Woodwards, Arnolds and Murtoughs) and we'll prosper again. Delay 5-10 years and it'll be too late by then and we'll make Liverpool's title draught look like a coffee break.

Get a fecking coach in who can coach them to defend properly.
Again, I have to agree. I have given up on calling for OGS to leave because he's good at creating unity and motivating players and that's key in modern football.

But we need a proper specialists in place to coach this squad.

There's a different between Maguire getting injured on Sunday and VVD getting injured at the start of the season. Liverpool have had all season to train and try partnerships without him.

I'm not anti Scottish, I just wanted Moyes out.
Weird because it was a pretty good excuse for them for the 2-3 months immediately after VVD's injury, but having to bodge together two different centre half pairings for 2 games within 4 days of Maguire's injury, out of depth so piss weak that we played Maguire for every league minute before it, is somehow not an excuse.
They were playing with Nathaniel Phillips and a 20 year old in defence today, its not an excuse we should use, not today.

Very disappointed, a lot of misplaced effort from most of the team. Seemed to have one eye on the final.
It's difficult to point to any one player who played worse than any other, possibly AWB and Fernandes were the best of a bad bunch, Cavani never really got much service, Shaw was OK, but the whole team, as a team, were appalling, and there were a lot of individual errors.
Why Matic came on for Bailly I'll never understand.

And that game sums up exactly why I think many have been hesitant to get giddy or see us as long term title challengers.
The excuses incoming will be predictable.
In fact expect several threads excusing that utter gutter performance being down to ‘protests’ and ‘dead rubber’ but it was the same old problems rearing their ugly head.
An absolute shambles of a performance.

Basically United at the moment are like being with a partner who constantly cheats but tells you you’ll get married eventually but deep down you know it won’t happen because the same problems lie at the surface.

They might go four months without cheating but then you start noticing dodgy messages on their phone or they start turning up late from work. It’s started again with United.

This. It all looked way too familiar. Broken up and unable to transition.

Didn't help at all benching Greenwood for Pogba when we clearly needed both, Mason to push them back (or else punish them) and Pogba deeper to help with the outball/buildup, more so in the absence of Maguire.

Same old shit really.

Well, Liverpool have had a ton of stinkers too you know. That's why they are struggling to get top 4. We are playing the 4th game in a weeks time, without our captain and best defender, and nothing to play for. If was a terrible performance, but it's not the end of the world.

Maybe 50 +1 million into their pocket in the summer.
And Joel (apparently the fan) with an access to board meetings and decision making. Alright, I'm convinced now. Those drunk teenage clowns playing football on the pitch after fighting with overweight stewards in their late 60s to get there, did their job.

Shambolic performance.

I've always backed Bailly, just the kind of aggressive CB I like, but we seem to have an uncanny knack of falling apart with him in there. Might be my imagination.

Henderson had a terrible game imo. Non entity between the sticks.

Fred / McTom fell apart under the press.

We need Maguire back for the final. Hold him together with sticky tape and paper mache if you have to I don't care just get him in there. New CB / RW / All action CM needed this summer I think.

Simple..They wanted it more than we did. Sloppy, brain fart football from us, too often when teams high press us we slip into panic mode and continually give the ball away. Defence shocking, but not helped by our midfield, Mckred not fit to wear the shirt. You can't even say it hasn't been coming. At the end we looked ordinary and well beaten. Pretty shit night. Hard to come up with our m.o.m..A petulant Bruno maybe. Looking forward to Oles excuses.

Let's be honest the attitude of a number of those United players tonight stunk out Old Trafford. Many of them clearly playing through the motions and minding themselves for the upcoming Cup final.

The stature of that fixture simply didn't matter to most of them. No way would they have performed in that manner if points was required to finish 4th and supporters was in attendance.

There are too many mistakes in this team to ever win the big titles. Fred for their third goal, matic/Henderson for the fourth.

Our fans can complain, cry and insult all the players and the manager as much as they want. This is how we look when we go for it with the team as currently constructed. Sure Maguire would have helped significantly cover the flaws of Lindelof and kept the ball enough to relieve Mctominay and Fed of the pressure of having it.

However, here's the the thing, our fans don't like to actually watch the oppositions we play. Our press was actually good, however Liverpool were able to play out of it because they had midfielders who were willing and capable of playing one on one. Their midfielders had the agility to turn, the passing range to pass out of tight situations and the quick thinking to make quick moves. All with the confidence to take on that responsibility and get on the ball. They could play out of our press, we couldn't play out of theirs. That was the difference. Blaming Pogba, Rashford, Cavani, Bruno, AWB and Shaw is futile when the centre of the pitch, both defensively and in midfield were battles that we lost. Liverpool played out of defence with their youngsters because their midfielders had theconfidence to take on responsibility of control of the ball.

At least it highlighted our needs more so than any other game.

a. we need a capable midfielder that has good technique and quick decision making. A CDM would be nice.
b. Maguire should never have been blamed for anything. It so obvious when he plays, yet people turn a blind eye to it due to his price tag. He covers our midfield in term of holding possession, he constantly covers for Lindelof's errors and allows Shaw to venture high. We are lucky he is always available. We need a defender, one that can finally give him a worthy partner.

2 deflected goals and half the team was wank. Pogba Bailley lindelof Henderson McTom Fred all had poor games and that probably shows the merit of Maguire. The glaring fact we need a WC or as close as possible CD and DM to come in in the summer. Why we have given Bailley a new contract ill never know.

How does them having defenders out mean us missing a guy so important he'd played every minute in the league for us doesn't count? We are then expected to find 2 defensive partnerships for 2 games in 3 days, out of options deemed not worthy of replacing Maguire for a single minute beforehand, against two teams who both desperately need to win. Shock horror we are defensively all over the place, but pointing the circumstances out is somehow small time mentality.

Nah, they can cause a kerfuffle a week Tuesday yet. See if we can go for the triple home loss.

A 20 year old who was playing on loan at Kidderminster in non league last year, I believe too!

Yeah bang on those are easily the two most important positions but then a properly run club would get both AND a RW this summer

The Europa League, the cup for the Albanians and Bulgarians, should never be a factor for progress for a team like United. It is always fantastic to lift a trophy, but yeah… it’s a shit competition. Villarreal are 20 points behind 4th in Spain, Roma 15 points behind in Italy.

First 25 mins we looked good. Then we were a mess at the back, liverpool's first three goals were all avoidable.

I guess we've had a good run against them in recent years though.

Ole needs to pull a world class CM out of the hat this summer. Feels we haven’t had that for well over a decade now. In their absolute prime. Not another 40m wasted on a Beek type. Fingers crossed.
