PL L FA Premier League

Newcastle United 4:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Also really don’t like Newcastle. Well done for beating Liverpool in cup final but that’s about it. They put away fans somewhere high up in the stadium, miles away from pitch it seems. Still great support from our fans to team and Amorim especially.

You need players like Martinez, Ugarte (not sure United have anyone else) for games like Newcastle away.

When there is nothing for United to play for, you need a few players that love a scrap to get everyone up for the match.

It's a massive job for someone get this lot doing anything meaningful.

Doesn't seem to be any desire in any of the players. We just seem in really big trouble at the moment.

Relegation form at this rate.

That lineup was inexcusable. I don’t know what he was thinking
One eye on thursday! the early Garna sub, Bayindir minutes, Lindelof in from the start, Amas and Eriksen starting.... it is all focusing on thursday. Not that we would have beaten NU but if we had brought back that 2-1 in the euro, the approach could well have been different

Thought Bayindir was ok apart from the last goal (obviously), what is it with Utd and keepers? still the poor kicking it out is an easier fix than the mistakes Onana has been making

In terms of the goals, you can pick fault with defenders for all of them, but over all thought the defence just did not function well together, hard to blame that solely on Lindelof, but it does seem like a big factor.

Thought Ugarte had another poor game, just on a bad run for him, issue is that position either him or Case is pivotal, especially when you have like your 5th choice CCB and you are playing against one of the most assured midfields in the league

I thought it was pretty obvious the team was picked with Thursday in mind. For an hour I thought they were decent. Then they fell to pieces. I still think that there is a way forward with Amorim. A CF and a goalie will help.

Apart from our goal there were a couple of other positive incidents that are worth remembering. Firstly the move that ended up with the Bruno/Zirkzee one-two on the edge of the box and Zirkzee shot - it was absolutely sublime and would have been one of the goals of the season. Secondly Yoro pushing Fabian Schar on his arse - yes in some ways it was a silly yellow card to pick up, but it was nice to see him sticking up for Amass and the kind of attitude that makes me think he'll go on to be a massive favourite at United if we can hold on to him.

Amorim should be given the chance to work with players he brings in and given a decent run at it. The squad he inherited at United when he came in last November was, in the main, simply not good enough to mount any sort of challenge to Liverpool, City or Arsenal and has proven unable to even secure a top half of the table finish. We need (another) clear out of players who are not and mostly have never been good enough. Amorim likes to play in a certain way but needs the right type of players to fit in with his formation so he must be allowed to bring in new defenders, midfielders, a goalkeeper and a striker capable of scoring at least 20 goals a season. The tricky bit will be in persuading top players to sign for a club in decline.
Exactly that.

Im a big fan of Martinez, he fights... but I think his injury record means we have to replace him,

Ill not lie, i wasnt as bothered about the result as much. I just wanted to see a bit of form and putting some good plays together in prep for Thursday.

Was praying for no more injuries, especially to our forward players. Zirkzee hasnt been amazing and I didnt think id be saying this, but we will miss his presence up top big time.

Time for Mason Mount to maybe step up and show why we bought him. (if he doesnt get injured)

Mainoo will no doubt slip into MF and bruno will move further up the pitch

I'm starting to get annoyed at us getting easily rolled over by these tin pot teams with tin pot fans. I'm talking Newcastle, Bournemouth, Brighton, Brentford, Forest, Palace, etc. These games used to be guaranteed points at home, and a decent chance of wins or draws away.

Now we rock up and you just know we're going to get outfought, out run and out thought, especially away from home where our players just give up immediately.

Our passing is shite, or goalkeepers are shite, our defence is leaky, our midfield is a yellow card away from giving up every game, our numbers 10's are ineffective and our strikers are fecking bobbins.

I don't see a way out of this for Amorim. The pressure on him to get it right is going to ramp up after the summer window, and a lot of that will depend on us winning the europa league. If it gets to October next season and we're way off the pace again, it's going to get toxic very quickly.

The game is on MUTV now so I watched from 16 mins to 30, Newcastle were toying with us, we have been pegged back the whole time. When I watched it live yesterday it didn't seem so bad but we have been battered and unable to hold on to the ball. Switched the cnut off now.

Going through the post match media stuff this morning and the criticisms from Keane & Neville and the papers etc just gets so tedious.

We’re 32 games into the season and we’re 14th. There’s really nothing left to say that hasn’t been said already this season so the criticism just feels pointless. It’s flogging a dead horse.

I know you have to fill air time and column inches but we know a number of players are past it, not good enough or not fit enough. You can’t fix those things until the summer.

Completely agree. I love Keano but yesterday it felt like he was just going through the motions - giving Sky Sports what they wanted to hear. Both him and Gary Nev don't seem to be able to judge performances in the context of the current landscape, it's like they are measuring everything against the United that they played for.

It'll only be on him if he gets the players he wants which to be honest I can't see happening as we don't have the 300m we need.

Garnacho, Dalot, Eriksen, Amass, Bayindir, Zirkzee just not good enough with intensity, drive with the ball, strength and actual Technicality and decision making. If you have six below par players against any teams in the top six you’re going to lose. Im still not convinced of Amorims system and will it ever work in the premier league is a major worry.
I thought zirkzee did well actually. He was able to hold the ball better upfront than hojlund and created opportunities with his passes.

100% it’s like they get given the Men In Black memory blast before every United game.

It became tedious months ago and I feel sorry for anyone who actually pays to listen to Roy and Gary’s analysis.

I don't think he'll be much good to us when he finally returns as it such a serious long-term injury he has, I'll be surprised if he isn't sold in summer 2026 or is a regular starter for the 26/27 season, so, either sold in summer 2026 or the new Phil Jones, that's his future at UTD.

The first half wasn't too bad... the second was among the worst performances in the past three years. No MoM... they should all be ashamed and embarrassed

Neither of them has said something not said here - but I love how people are blaming gary even though he wasn't even there on Sunday

The sad thing is that this was an average performance for us. It wasn't even below par. That is our new par and it's fecking dire.

I know people need time but Amorim really needs to start getting better performances, patience can only ho on for so long without any signs of improvement.

I like Keano, but his entire argument now is based on how much they "run", and he's getting on my nerves.

Neville is Neville and Scholes is a right miserable bastard. I'm convinced that they are loving the fact that we're shite, because a) they get paid to talk about it more, and b) it makes their generation of United players look good.

I'm just not that bothered by the result or the performance. We gave Bayandir his first start in the PL against a very good side, who although made a mistake overall he was quite decent. We gave Amass, 18 years old, his first start in the PL and he looked quite decent as well. Zirkzee looked almost a cheat code at times but was felled by injury. There were some poor individuals performances and we already know we need to upgrade on Dalot and Hojlund in particular but we were actually very much in the game until we were denied a clear pk and conceded immediately thereafter and collapsed soon after that.

The truly important match, as everyone on the planet knows, is this Thursday.

Thought the first half was okay considering they're a better side, in better form and have more to play for in the league. Even after conceding the 2nd we still had a few decent attacks, everything just fell apart after the subs.

Just need to hope that was a blip after some more encouraging performances recently, beat Lyon and it'll be forgotten about.

For a while watching I was thinking we are doing alright, the usual wrong choices when it mattered but we seemed in control.

There seemed to be a tendency to overplay at times and we were lucky to get away with some stuff. Eventually we got caught out.

The most annoying one being the 3rd goal. Ok Maz slips but really there was a huge error before this that led to him being in that position.

Don’t know why but when we were on the attack the option was to Dorgu. For some reason we opted to play it out to the right killing the move and then leading to us giving it to Maz. I knew as soon as we went to the right we were in trouble. Didn’t quite expect the slip but positionally we shot ourselves in the foot because of 1 dumb decision.

We really need to get better at the decision making or knowing when and where to pass.

I have felt in recent months we have been quite good at getting into positions for the switch of play to the other full back, but actually haven’t seen us execute this as much recently. Wonder if it’s partly other teams figuring it out?

Newcastle, 'big lads' and they can play a bit nuff said!

We got little cameos in the first half of what might happen for us, in the future, but second half only Ugarte turned up; five mins to go, 3-1 down, whose the only United player who is harassing Newcastle players on the ball?
Wouldn't be surprised if he walked this summer, then we will have no one who 'bites yer legs'.
