A decade would be good enough, that's ten years. Coaches in the ilk of Nagelsmann, Rose, Wagner, Klopp are famous for their brand of football, but most of them are disciples of Rangnick. He's a football revolutionary and I can't think of many men that would fit the DOF role better than him. I'd take him even if at 70, the difficult part is actually being able to convince him to come.
Rangnick is a fantastic coach and DoF. Whatever role he is given, I'll be happy to have him.
As a manager he was very impressive with Hoffenheim and did decently at Schalke, then after his hiatus he took Leipzeg to 3rd place after they were 6th the previous season.
As a DoF, he's done amazingly well at Leipzeg since he joined with him in he lower divisions and taking them to BL. Their signings have been great during that time.

Yeah why would we hire an experienced director with proven track record, we should hire a 40-year old to make sure he can stick around for 25 years regardless of performance. The United way.

I'd have him as interim till the end of the season and then take the DoF role. Makes a lot of sense but it's Woodward in the end that has to approve it so I'm not holding my breath.

No modern business hires someone in a 10 + perspective. That’s fairytale thinking. The structure and strategy should never be dependent on one person. Which is also the main reason we have struggled after the great man retired.

Feels like he is interested in the Bayern job and using United as a negotiation ploy. It might not be bad if he takes Klopp with him to Munich.
Yeah everybody knows DoF's peak at age 45.
We won't see him at either of those 2 clubs. He's used to calling the shots at his respective employers, and doesn't like others reigning into his meddlings.
Woodward would have to step down in order for him to come here. I hope it happens.

Nice! You could argue that Rangnick is without exception the best appointment we can make for the Director of Football position (over Campos or Paratici or Webber), and the long wait would have been totally worth it. Not only because he is a former coach and is known as The Professor in German football (which gives him unique insight into the game vis-à-vis pure scouts that rose through the ranks) and influences the playing staff at the ground level but also: he has extensive experience with data analytics in recent years and is an ideology driven football person so his model of operation (Kapital, Kompetenz and Konzept) would create a viable long-term blueprint for United, once it's modified per the club's needs and seeps through the structure. A large percentage of the credit for the meteoric rise of the Red Bull organisation can be appropriated to him because he was the master puppeteer tugging the strings...
And he's also versed with coaches or scouting staff that should interest United in the future if things go south with the current administration: most prominently Nagelsmann, Rose, Mitchell, Marić. Would be more influential and significant than any player signing we can realistically make, honestly — and really set a standard of modernization/development for the next 5-6-7 year cycle.

I am a big fan of Mitchell but Rangnick is the don. He's the brains behind Leipzig revolution not Mitchell.
The key here is Woodward wont give up the amount of responsibility and autonomy Rangnick would want. We will look for a more specific and smaller role, someone that wont challenge Woody
What we need most is someone who can lay the foundations for the position, and a structure that will last for years to come. For that we need experience, which is why when names like VDS are thrown about they don't make any sense. Most of these guys have been successful going in with a functional system already in place. They've never had to build one from the ground up.
