Anyone else cool with binning Varane in the summer because of his injury problems? It's not like he's been mostly world class when he plays for us. He can be a bit iffy and if we have an adequate replacement I'd be fine with cashing in while we still can.
I wouldn't have even signed him in the first place because of his injury problems.

Looking over my shoulder.
I wonder how he could possibly be worse playing out from the back than we currently are? His passing isn't adventurous, and he isn't smooth on the ball, but at least his passes have some speed and are mostly accurate. Lindelof and Maguire are playing the slowest passes between them that I have ever seen. The opposition can do yoga in between and still have time to move the entire team, their mascot and supporters over to the other side.

Not like he’s been amazing this season but his best level at the club is a lot higher than the other two playing.

He is definitely better than Maguire and Lindelof. Varane may be on sucky form but I'd still trust him more in the big games.

However, now is the perfect time to cash in if it suits all parties.

Ridiculous situation really. Our best CB is on the bench defence is leaking goals and chances in every bigger game.

He is not the best CB in our club. Last season Martinez was and Varane was average. This season Maguire is our best player. To get back to our old days we should sign hungry young players and not over the top has beens like Varane,Casemiro, Cavani, CR7, Falcao, Zlatan etc

Mental

I don’t understand how Maguire who was 5th choice CB behind Evan’s and even Shaw playing CB, essentially transfer listed and had an offer accepted and now is suddenly ETH’s number 1 pick

Ridiculous

Because he's got his head down and proved himself despite all the nonsense from our own fans.

He was never '5th choice' either, 3rd choice RCB at worst behind an injury prone Varane and clearly not good enough Lindelof. Thankfully we didn't sell him.

Nonsense

Hes been at the club years and always failed to impress. A handful of games isn’t changing years of mediocre performances, he’s ‘proved’ nothing. Was available at a knock down price and only West Ham were interested shows the level he’s at.

Lindelof has been a better player for us than Maguire by the way. Recency bias in football is mental.

They were our number 1 partnership for about a hundred games and Lindelof was regularly the better player theres zero agenda, Maguire put in shit performance after shit performance and Ole didn’t have the balls to drop him

Right back at you if you're championing Maguires failed United career. 3 years of shite and a run of 6 games this season and suddenly he's the English Cannavaro

I haven't 'championed' anything but anyone that rates Lindelof over him doesn't have a clue.

Posters that get wound up over Maguire playing well and proving their agendas wrong are the funny though.

No they do have a clue, they've watched them play together a hundred times and even under Ole they wanted Maguire dropped years ago. He was dropped for the entirety of last season and we looked the best defensively than we have in years.

Id take Lindelof over Maguire every day of the week. There's 30+ games left this season how much you betting he fecks up yet again and gets dropped?

Be honest.

They've both been as bad as each other.

No idea how 2 players could play so many games together and still not have any semblance of a partnership between them.

Maguire was atrocious last season. Same as Onana this year, Maguire was main reason why we dropped out from Europe.
Rapha-Lisandro(Lindelof) was pretty good partnership last year. Yes, against Liverpool and City they had awful games but in general they did pretty good.

Really sucks that we are potentially losing Rapha over a disagreement with the manager. There is a stubbornness to ETH that could really become his undoing. :(
if we get a fee for him, we take it. He's our 2nd highest paid player, he's constantly injured. Even last season, where when he played, he looked good for the most part, he only played 24 league games. That's 14 league games he missed. This is his 3rd season, he's played 75 games. For comparison, McT has played 90 games in that period and he isn't even a first pick if everyone is fit. Fernandes has played 124 games in that period. No-one doubts his pedigree, but injuries have taken their toll, we can't have our 2nd highest paid player being a bit part player for 3 seasons. If the Saudi's flash the cash, bite their hand off, if not, he stays, works hard and tries to force his way back in the first 11.

They've been at a very similar level on average. Maguire's peak level is higher but his floor is also lower, and in general he's been more inconsistent as he goes through periods where he can be at either extreme.

Lindelof is just so passive, so weak. Maguire has had some calamity moments but you can trust him in 50/50's and I think is just an all round better defender than Viktor, he also had a very good period when he joined where he was actually very solid. Has Lindelof ever had a period of consistency, he's basically been in and out the team since he joined with long periods on the bench more recently.

Yeah but they were freak games. We had the most clean sheets in the league last season, Dave won the golden glove etc
We have the most clean sheets this season so far too.

He always has been for LCB. Ten Hag doesn't consider LCB a position for Varane and has said so recently.
This Dutch obsession with only playing left footed players on the left side of central defense is lunacy.

Harry has played most of his career as a LCB...but for some reason he can't play there with Varane because ETH only wants Harry to play as a RCB...what is going on here? And it's not the left footed thing because Lindelof has played plenty as a LCB.

It’s complete bollocks though. Varane at RCB and Maguire at LCB. Playing Shaw out of position and Dalot out of position. Makes no sense. Makes both worse. In addition we struggled badly on that side. What did eth do? Nothing. Terrible management.

No, he can play Lindelif and Evans there. So only French centre backs cannot play there. Although, Maguire has normally played that side, so… just put Varne rcb? Not rocket science.

Wouldn’t have changed anything for the better. Our CBs were our two best players.
