An absolutely top class defender, shame his body has let him down. Absolutely delighted that he's got a major trophy here before leaving.

Still a top class defender as evidenced today, but unfortunately, not reliable throughout a season.

So glad he finished on a high, though. A serial winner!

He also sacrificed playing for France to keep playing for us. I think a lot people here have overlooked that.
There's one spot left in the French squad iirc. With Lucas out, I wonder if Deschamps will ask him to join. Obviously he seems like he wouldn't be a problem if he doesn't play, and useful for the younger players if he doesn't really play, and if there's 10 minutes left in a game you're seeing out, I'd certainly take him over anyone else available as Saliba's partner. Could argue their best backline with Lucas out is Theo-Saliba-Varane-Kounde with Theo free to attack, Kounde sitting more defensively and 2 pacy defenders either side of Varane dealing with crosses and any physical striker. Konate might not be fit for every game, Upamecano is in horrid club form and Pavard and Kounde are a bit small if you're playing some big target man like that Austrian striker or whoever they get in the knockouts, never mind a "Weghorst has been thrown on with 10 minutes to go and crosses are being flung into the box" situation.

A top player and one I hoped we'd keep for his extra year despite the injuries. Yes his salary is massive but selling Maguire and Lindelof would have negated Varane's salary and when fit he's still out of the top drawer. He's also a serial winner that would have been great to keep around the place. Just a shame we haven't had the chance to see enough of him.

Chuck a 12 month appearance related deal at him Jim, you know you want to.

It is unfortunate that injuries didn’t allow us to enjoy watching him more. He is an absolute class defender. Letting him go is probably the right decision (due to injuries and wages). Great end to his united career!

If we had him and Martinez fit all season I genuinely think we would have qualified for the CL, shame his body is in shambles.

I really would like for him to stay one more year but we can't pay 300k a week for 20 games

Class defender, sad to see him leave. Wish him the best of luck where ever he ends up.

Really have mixed feelings about letting him go, but on balance I think he probably can't be trusted to stay fit and it's a damn shame. We have one hell of a job replacing him.

He’ll be very hard to replace in terms of his experience, class and his ability to perform in big games. Obviously, you’d like to think whoever does come in should be available a lot more often than Varane would be so it’s better for us in the long run. Knowing our luck, we’ll sign the next Phil Jones

Brilliant way to finish his time here, an absolutely brilliant defender when fit, it's just a shame how rare that is nowadays.

A real class player - glad we had him here even for the length we did at the later stage of his career.

But going forwards we simply cannot afford to pay someone £300k a week for maybe 15 games. We need to develop a hungry reliable first XI and a fit and active wider squad.

Shame to see him go, but it is completely logical to do so.

To quote a cliche, he’s a Rolls Royce of a centre half. Au revoir Varane, and best of luck - hope you go else where and get a hefty pay day and enjoy your time.

Did very well in one aspect against City. When the ball came into the box he made sure he got to it most of the time. He dominated with clearing the ball and the couple of times he couldnt get to it, Lisandro made sure to be in position and head the ball out before Haaland could get to it. Other than that didnt do much but when you play as deep and defensively as we did with so many players back and plenty in our own box you do need one player to be the "Vidic" and repel the balls into the box without fail and as is per usual this season Varane was very good at picking a position to meet balls into the box, leaped well and won the ball.

Don't taze me, bro
is it mythology about him being unavailable this season? Wasn’t he available to start more matches than any other CB we have?

Offer him 200k/week 1-year extension to stay. If he says no, fine. But if he says yes, worth every bit.

Still believe he's the last CB we should be getting rid of bar Martinez so not happy to see him leave but I'm glad that he got to celebrate silverware to cap off his time. Class act through and through who will be missed

I mean, if he were willing to accept 200K/w then I'm sure the club would have extended his contract. Obviously Varane has at least 1 big payday left in his career and has decided to capitalise on that instead.

I know we sat deep yesterday but the change in attitude of the defence was more akin to last season. They celebrated defensive actions, grabbing each other shaking each other and congratulating good things.

Last season this happened a lot, Shaw, DeGea, Martinez, Varane, Bissaka/Diaz it looked like a unit defending for their lives and it meant everything to them. Well that returned yesterday and it was fantastic to see. So often this season it’s just looked weak and pathetic like the defence just felt sorry for itself.

Maybe it’s Martinez’s influence but Varane just looks different when he has him Alongside. He’s an exceptional player just a shame about the injuries. If he was willing to take a pay cut and be a squad rotational player next year to help hopefully the new cb’s we bring in I’d be all for that.

Mad to think that 200k pw isn't necessarily considered a big payday for the top players these days, isn't it?!

It would be up to the club whether they value him that much or not but if he still wants to give it a go in Europe he'll probably accept that as no other European club will take him on on that wage.

If he's looking for a payday however Saudi's would probably offer him much more.

Amazing and an absolute pleasure seeing him play for us. It's mad how much he loves the club and is proud to have played for us given he won everything with Madrid and spent a long time there. Same vibes as when Van Persie said the little boy inside him was screaming Manchester united.

Brilliant performance yesterday, I would definitely keep him above the chuckle brothers if he were willing to stay and play the Jonny Evans role.

Probably feels it time to move on somewhere where there is less pressure and less intensity and stress on his body.

Thought he was fantastic yesterday alongside Martinez. A real top class CB whose body just can’t quite cope with the demands anymore.

What a lovely way to end his time here too.

Yeah, sadly this is probably the last generation of foreign players who will have that innate childhood love of Man United. The next generation won't have lived through our glory years.

I’m constantly surprised/impressed how many of my son’s friends are passionate United fans (he’s 15). Don’t underestimate the power of fathers to indoctrinate their kids, even when the club isn’t keeping up it’s part of the deal on the pitch.

Yeah, but outside of Britain/Ireland I think the indoctrination requires a minimum level of on-field success.

If he joined us years earlier and before the injuries took hold, he’d have been a United legend

So glad we got a few years out of him anyway. Class player who I thought was brilliant when he played

I hope whoever replaces him this summer is someone who has the potential to be that good

Maybe. You don’t need all that much success to keep them hooked. For my son the Van Gaal FA Cup win went a very long way, so yesterday will have been a nice fillip for a lot of young kids. But yeah, I guess that FA cup glory doesn’t translate well abroad.

He was available and in the match day squad for around 70-75% of games this season.
