He's 27, 28 this year.Signings like this scare me. I can only think of Van Persie who has worked for us, when signing a player at his, or older, for so much money!
Entering peak years for a centre half.

Never ceases to amaze me on here. Someone on the Kane thread the other day making out he was past it and "nearly 30". Madness. Why are people saying he is too old to play for us when he is younger than Harry Maguire?
Yeah most people are just stupid.Never ceases to amaze me on here. Someone on the Kane thread the other day making out he was past it and "nearly 30". Madness.
Player in his prime, ready made to slot in and improve us significantly.
Totally agree. 60 mill for Varane is the best possible CB business we could do in the summer.I'm pretty amazed there are people scoffing at 60m for an elite centre back in his prime. We're being linked with unproven players and the figures bandied about always reflect the United tax. Koundé for 50-60-70m....
It would be the most obvious "get it done" I can imagine.
No matter the calibre of the player I can't see anyone paying £60m in Covid economy for a player with only 1yr left who is reportedly refusing to sign a new one.I'm pretty amazed there are people scoffing at 60m for an elite centre back in his prime. Such an opportunity doesn't arrive very often. Would enable Ole tactical flexibility - higher line, pressing higher up, not as reliant on the McFred combo, so possibly more creativity from midfield. Could really fix a lot of things in one move.Totally agree. 60 mill for Varane is the best possible CB business we could do in the summer.
What it does do though is limit our spending elsewhere, not sure how much money Ed and the elder Vampires are willing to spend this summer, a lot I hope.
Yeah, I don't see us selling Pogba for 40-50m this summer. At all. If he desperately wants to go, I could only see us sticking to a high price or using him in a swap for a quality player. I think the current economic situation doesn't really affect the elite players' prices too much.No matter the calibre of the player I can't see anyone paying £60m in Covid economy for a player with only 1yr left who is reportedly refusing to sign a new one.
It's why people are talking about Pogba being in the £40-50m bracket.
100%. I'm trying my best not to believe this, because it's that good.60 mill is what it will cost to get Kounde or Pau Torres. Varane at that price is a steal.
Yeah it's getting trickier to not get invested in this despite the likelihood we will end up in the same situation as 2015Such an opportunity doesn't arrive very often. Would enable Ole tactical flexibility - higher line, pressing higher up, not as reliant on the McFred combo, so possibly more creativity from midfield. Could really fix a lot of things in one move.

My only concern with Kane IF he ever left Spurs would be how much have these niggly ankle injuries taken a toll on himYeah most people are just stupid.
Lewandowski has said a few weeks ago "His body was never in a better shape".
It is down to every player to have still a good body with 30-34.
Of course if you had 2-3 long-term injuries in your career then it is a different situation.
What makes you say this? He has one year left on his contract, Madrid have been trying to sign him to a new deal for ages and still not signed and we all know he's been a wet dream of Woodward's for years. Madrid can't afford to lose him on a free.I always wondered if in these type of situations are they actually negotiating in the background with Woodward to make it look legit or are they just using journalists/papers to throw our name out there?
Imo there is less than 1% chance of this happening. And everyone knows that. So I wonder how that works.
Has been on Utd's radar since the summer of 2011 and came back on it again under Jose but were quoted £100mWhat makes you say this? He has one year left on his contract, Madrid have been trying to sign him to a new deal for ages and still not signed and we all know he's been a wet dream of Woodward's for years. So many players have done this no?What makes you say this? He has one year left on his contract, Madrid have been trying to sign him to a new deal for ages and still not signed and we all know he's been a wet dream of Woodward's for years. Madrid can't afford to lose him on a free.
Oooffff Red suits himHow stupid do you feel?
That should be obvious but all too often when discussing transfers fans are absolute in their views. Black or white.A player can genuinely be interested in joining us and still be potentially trying to sign a new deal if the current club match his demands It’s not an absolute either way.
Very stupid infactHow stupid do you feel?
We need to go back to this shade of red, with the long sleeves as well. Reminds me of ronaldo circa 08/09. Looks sexy as feck. How stupid do you feel?
Tbf, it'd be a nice touch if we bought Jones because Varane turned us down and then a decade later we buy Varane and feck Jones off.Maybe he’s heard wind that we’re finally getting rid of Phil Jones, and feels like he’d actually get some minutes for us.
Obviously but a muppet can dreamNo chance we get him. His agent is using us for a bigger contract.
Yeah miracles can happenTbf, it'd be a nice touch if we bought Jones because Varane turned us down and then a decade later we buy Varane and feck Jones off.
in ordinary times, you might be right but we won't have a huge pot of many to spend and sorting out the midfield/wingers (after about 10 years of not doing so) is more important plus we need a world-class goal scorer. and, by the way, as much as you might disagree, opinions can't be awful. This has to be a wind up? Varane at 27(prime CB years) has literally won EVERYTHING there is to win at top level and Madrid are desperate to have him as their next captain. Achievements aside he's easily a top 10 CB in the world ability wise £50-60m is a very reasonable fee if he had more years left on his deal we'd be looking at a figure close to £100m. Preferring perrenial plan Bs and a youth player to a bonafide world class CB is like preferring to eat raw intensities over a medium rare steak. Awful awful opinion
Pogba is a world cup winner but doesn't dominate in lots of games - that trophy has absolutely no bearing on the premier League. Steve Bruce was never even picked for England but was a fantastic CB. I keep hearing the argument about what players have won making them brilliant - by that measure, people who haven't won those trophies are poor, which i obviously not true.£30m because he's unproven in the PL but a WC and multiple CL winner?
Fish isn't ready for a backup role, he's going to need a loan for a season at least before he's considered, look at Tuanzebe.
Bailly is likely to leave as he's one year left on his deal and not willing to sign a new one according to the press. So to lose Bailly, having Tuanzebe and Fish as back up would be naive of us if we're going to attempt to challenge next season.
There's been a couple. Robben, di Maria and Ôzil come to mind. Real Madrid are stubborn about their wage scale and Varane earns very little considering his experience and silverware. This might be the chance for him to finally earn the big pay cheque. I don't think it's impossible for us to acquire him. This guy would be the dream partner for Maguire wouldn't he.
How many players leave Madrid in their peak years though?
What makes you doubt him? His height of 1,91m/6,3ft? His outstanding physical stature? His recovery speed? I mean, we have Londelöf starting for us, Stones starts for City who are miles ahead of the rest of their competition in the table...Like him but not sure how well suited he is to the Prems physical nature....
Varane is very strong.Like him but not sure how well suited he is to the Prems physical nature....
people said ruben dias and thiago silva were going to buckle to the epl, they are doing just fine.Like him but not sure how well suited he is to the Prems physical nature....
No but it effects the price of the player who is a proven winner, has the mentality to not crumble under pressure, which we need. There's no way we'd get Varane for £30m, no way. Would we sell Pogba for £30m? No chance.Pogba is a world cup winner but doesn't dominate in lots of games - that trophy has absolutely no bearing on the premier League. Steve Bruce was never even picked for England but was a fantastic CB. I keep hearing the argument about what players have won making them brilliant - by that measure, people who haven't won those trophies are poor, which i obviously not true.
I am worried that Varane will be caught out by the pace of the PL, which is well above that of the La Liga. He's obviously a very good player but using £60m of a transfer kitty that won't be huge, when we need to strengthen midfield/wingers and buy a top-class goal scorer worries me.
As for young players not being ready - well, if SAF had followed that line we'd never have seen Gary Neville, Scholesy, Becks etc
