I like him but he's getting old and has hardly been a bastion of good health during his tenure. A departure to a lesser league is best for Raph, and also the club who will hopefully invest in a new CB. Arabia beckons.

Meh, bit of a shame as he still had it in him to be good at times but hard to justify his wages with his fitness record so definitely for the best.

Not exactly a shock. Seemed to genuinely care about the club, shame it didn't work out

Shame he joined us towards the end of his career, class when he was fit to play, looking like a solid pairing with Martinez.

Only United could sign a 28 year old world class CB off the back of 3 largely injury free seasons at Real, and then watch him turn to mush.

A CB should be in their prime from around 27-32. He should have been our van Dijk.

He’s a class act, shame but good move for both parties.

Can’t say it’s unexpected. He’s still a beast when he’s fit but that’s too unreliable these days. Guess we need a new starting CB for sure now

Casemiro, Martial, Sancho and Varane. A solid 1.2m off the wagebooks. Good start.

Very good player but correct decision by the club , a reset is needed and he is not the future.

Best of luck to him in the future , when fit he served us well.

That's Ten Hag staying then. Fantastic player that can't stay fit, wish we'd had him earlier.

Very good footballer, but it makes sense with his contract ending to part ways. I don’t know if he would go to the Saudi League or America, I think he still has more to offer than that.

Easily our best defender but his wage and contract expiring coupled with his injury record probably make this a good move for both parties

Shame really. Watch him go to another club and be injury free.

Came out of nowhere!
Out of nowhere ? It has been speculated for months that he might leave on a free.

Real Madrid getting 100m for him and Casemiro is wonderful business for them. One of them turned out to be a crock and the other is finished after just 1 season. Here we are after just couple of seasons looking for their replacements. Such terrible business by us.

At least we seem to be on the right track by letting him go instead of extending his contract to "protect" value. One down, few more to go. Martial and Eriksen should be next on those that needs to leave on a free.

Bit of a shame really. His injuries really prevented him from ever reaching his top level with us.

He went under the radar a lot of the time and we were easily a lot better when he played. I think one of the reasons we've conceded so many cut-backs this season is due to his absences. He's absolutely elite at defending that near post area.

Wish him all the best.

Madrid got done by Chelsea for Hazard though, swings and roundabouts

Good luck to him. Shame it didn't work out for him at ManUtd.

Thank you for everything Varane, what a wonderful player and professional. Wish the injuries didn’t hamper his time here

Sure they did.
'oh please , don't leave us' *While slowly pushing him out the door*
Not according to Ornstein and most of the reliable Madrid journos and this was well reported before our interest in him became widely known.

How did you come to that conclusion based on this news? Irrespective of whether ETH leaves or stays, Varane had to leave. We can't keep paying 300k every week for a guy who can't stay fit for more than half of the games.

If only he was 10 years younger, was solid most of the time but injuries has just caught up with him. Many thanks Rapha for your service

He only turned 31 a few weeks ago. That surprised me.

Where's he gonna end up? Far too young for the Saudi retirement league, right?
Don't Chelsea need an experienced head to replace Silva? :wenger:

His future here was rumored to be very much linked to Ten Hag's future. I agree with that, but I imagine we'd have liked to have kept him over Maguire, Lindelof and Evans.

Our best defender but its difficult when you're only fit to play half the games.

Thank you Rafa.

A shame that he joined during our very prolonged banter era. Good defender but unreliable.

Why?

INEOS would have seen him as a high earner and injury prone. I don't think it has much to do with ten Hag.

Varane himself might even have asked to leave. It can't have been easy playing for United. 2 horrendous seasons out of 3.

Happy he at least won something with us, even if it is just a League Cup (and maybe an FA cup).

Reckon he would have been a much more valuable asset if we weren't so shit, I never really saw him as someone who could singlehandedly sort out our defence but as someone who could pair with a proper captain-like CB.
