Define technician :P

But in terms of technical ability, id say Zlatan should surely top the list of everybody.

I would put Götze and Özil way over Robben here. Probably way over Ribery, too.
Perhaps we have different ideas of what a 'technician' entails in football but as stated by another poster, aside from Messi , Robben is probably the best small spaces dribbler in the world. That for me ranks very high on what makes a good technician. His shooting technique is also fantastic. If we are talking about passing then I would agree that Ozil and Goetze may be ahead but I don't think that is all there is to technique. I consider a wide variety of aspects important when judging technique. For me Robben would probably be number one on this proposed list and Ozil would make it too. Goetze I'm not so sure about however, though he could possibly squeak in.

Just because he doesn't try it much anymore doesn't mean he's lost the technical ability that made him known in the first place. He spent his childhood playing futsal, he'll shit on anyone if you go against him in a 1v1 on any technical skill or tricks.
Lots of people grew up playing futsal that aren't all that technically, that's a moot point. He just isn't all that great with the ball at his feet, not compared to the elite technicians around. Its got nothing to do with him doing those over elaborate tricks.

a lot of these lists brings up the question of what do you really mean by technician....cause a lot of those players offer completely different skill sets

Pirlo
Zlatan
Hazard
Modric
Robben
Ozil

Ribery used to be quite good too but don't know whether he could regain his form.

Technician is obviously a broad and somewhat subjective term, open to interpretation, but generally pertains to the full spectrum of attributes: ball control, ball manipulation, ball distribution, execution and so on and so forth.

I purposely left it open to see what people would come up with of their own accord and as seen in these lists, people generally bracket one type, such as close control specialists, with another, such as exceptional passers and ball manipulators.

I don't think anyone can say there is a right or wrong way to answer, but it can look a little skewed if you go for someone who's an extremely good dribbler, but can't pass, shoot etc to anything above an average standard, imo.

In hindsight, it would've been a better thread with a 1-10 as the first 5's are all extremely similar whereas lists of 10 would start to look more disparate.

Dribbling maybe not, but shooting technique, first touch and tricks (back-heel, side-heel, steps-over, freestyle touches etc) he definitely is.
Lots of poor technicians have great ball striking technique and that's not what this is about. His first touch is nothing special. And those tricks really don't say much.

You can't be a poor technician and be great at striking the ball. And Ronaldo's first touch is spotless, as is his ball control.

You can and I didn't say he's a poor technician. The best ball strikers are often midrange technicians. Batistuta, Lampard, Icardi, Gerrard, Trezeguet, Bale and Shearer can attest to that. Often the best technicians are mediocre at striking the ball. Iniesta, Modric, Mayer, Wilshere, Kovacic, Turan, David Silva and Xavi can attest to that.

His first touch is everything but spotless and his ball manipulation is nothing to write home about. For fans that have had the pleasure to see Cantona, Nani, Berbatov and Scholes I'm surprised any united fan would find Cristiano to being an elite technician.
