Red Card for Casemiro!
Federer has won eight Wimbledon titles, five Australian Open titles, five US Open titles and one French Open title. He is among eight men to have captured a career Grand Slam and has reached a record 29 men's singles Grand Slam finals, including 10 in a row from the 2005 Wimbledon Championships to the 2007 US Open.

Surely the greatest tennis player of all time.

I think I've been lucky enough to witness some of the greatest sportsmen ever. Messi, Ronaldo, Federer, Sachin, Phelps, Bolt, Kasparov.

I'm lucky enough to have seen Federer, Sachin live in person. Hoping to make it 3 with Bolt in London next week.

He and Messi are the greatest sportsmen I've seen.

But unlike Messi, whose greatness I appreciate from a distance, Federer is basically one of my two favorite sportsman who I've grown up supporting as I have with Manchester United. The guy is incredible and a complete freak. His consistency, his style and grace and obviously his success.

That he's now further developed his game and improved weaknesses at 35, take him a notch for me.

One of the highlight of my life so far is being able to watch him live at AO this year. Needless to say it was an emotional day watching him lift #18 and seeing the legend in the flesh.

It'll be a very long time before we can witness a sportsman of his calibre again.

He and sachin are my two favourite sports person. Off course I have a huge admiration for phelps and bolt. But federer to me is the greatest.

Wow. Lucky man. I'd find it hard to keep emotions in check had I actually been there. Weird how different today felt.

Federer has to be considered one of the most impressive, if not outright impressive athlete of any sport of any time.

His 2017 is beyond words

I'd probably add Bolt to that list also, sorry to derail your thread!

Throw in Phelps there too.

Done. :P

You're a lucky man. I've seen Sachin live, and that's about it amongst GOATs.

I also saw the entire RCB team 3 feet away when I was walking into ITC Kakatiya a year ago. Gayle, ABD, Kohli, et al. My proudest encounter with a celebrity was when Rahul Dravid waved back to me during an India-NZ test match years ago (Harbhajan scored a century in that game).

Anyway, going off topic.

Great player and embassador for tennis. Probably has the most pretentious fan following in all of sport though, unfortunately.

And his wife is slightly annoying whistling at opponents.

Ain't I right prof @Kevin?

Could we not derail the thread on the very first page?

You didn't know who Sachin Tendulkar was?
I have no idea who is him too. Cricket has pretty much zero relevance in Europe, there is no coverage of it here.

But yep, I think that we're lucky to have watched practically the entire career of many sport legends like Federer, Messi, Cristiano, Phelps, Bolt, LeBron and so.

Off topic but every Olympics I have an argument about this with my missus. There are too many swimming events, which I reckon inflates Phelps greatness. I don't doubt he is a great, though.

Chess is not a sport. Cricket obviously is whether you like it or not is a different debate. Roger Federer as one of the greatest ever sportsman is unquestionable. We are just fecking lucky to have witnessed so many greatest evers in our generation of growing up watching sport.

Getting the thread back on topic: I was devastated after the '08 Wimbledon final. I thought that would be the moment Federer's era ended, and that Nadal would dominate. Having Djokovic and Murray step it up seemed to be the final nails in the coffin, but it is remarkable how he recovered from those difficult years. He looked as fit and classy as ever. Can't wait for him to meet a fit Djoker and Nadal again - I think he still has it in him to beat them anywhere (maybe except on clay).

I remember thinking the same back then. Wasn't much of a fan of his back then since I'm a brit but you just have to admire his grace, skill, tenacity, and longevity. Freak of an athlete. Hope he gets 20+.

If this is to be his swansong season, it'll have to be up there with the very best in sporting history. Alongside the likes of Cruyff's comeback in '84, winning Feyenoord their first league title for a decade and being named player of the year at 36. I'm not a huge tennis fan but watching him this year has been one of my happiest sporting experiences. Ruthless and beautiful tennis throughout.
