Well I'm just finished 'the book' and I enjoyed it immensely. I think it's because it's pretty much how I want Keane to be. Is that what he was going for, the devious media-savvy bastard? Fair play, if it was, he's nailed it. Very honest and enlightening insight on his time at Sunderland and Ipswich. I hated him at Ipswich, all those rent-a-quote pressers. He never looked like he was enjoying himself. We've all got our angle on Roy, I want him to be content with the Irish set-up and he sounds like he's enjoying it, he loved United and doesn't mind saying it now, he held his hand up for all the shitty stuff I never liked at the time....yeah, a really good read.

Some unreported Gems from the book:

On leaving Sunderland
A few days after I left Sunderland, Yorkie texted me: All the best. I texted him back: Go feck yourself.

I saw him a few years ago. We both played in a charity match. We said hello to each other, but there was no real conversation. And it’s sad, because I had great days with Yorkie. I could have handled things differently.

On a confrontation with Coppell
Wally was right in front of me, and I said, ‘Wally, do you always shake players’ hands after you’ve just beaten them?’

And he goes, ‘Yeah, Roy – yeah, yeah.’

And, as I was talking to Wally, Kevin Dillon stood up, and goes, ‘Don’t you come in here and—’

I grabbed him, got his head on the table, pulled his tie up.

‘I’m feckin’ warning you—’

Nick Hammond grabbed me.

‘What are you doing?!’

‘You feckin’—’

‘Get out of our office!’

I went, ‘feck yis, anyway.’

Dillon said, ‘What are you having a go at me for? I’m a Sunderland man.’

I went, ‘feck you.’

And I walked out.

My staff hadn’t come in yet.

I wasn’t going back to Sunderland that night with the players. I was going home to Manchester, so I had a car waiting for me, to bring me to Heathrow.

My phone went off about ten minutes later. It was one of my staff.

‘Everything all right, gaffer?’

I hadn’t given them a heads-up about what had happened in Steve Coppell’s office. They’d followed me in – after I’d left.

‘All right, lads?’

And somebody said, ‘Your manager has just attacked one of our staff.’

And apparently Raimond van der Gouw, our goalkeeping coach, said, ‘Well, can we still have a sandwich?’

I didn't like that, with Yorke. But refreshingly, neither did he. That's what I mean, he admits regrets.

Two more; his book is great.

Roy on playing charity games:

I just didn’t want to end up playing football with feckin’ JLS. That was never my master plan. You get your boots on, and you’re overweight. You get injured; you embarrass yourself.

‘What am I doing?’

I didn’t like what I was becoming.

Roy on meeting Nial Quinn for the Sunderland job
They sent a helicopter over to Manchester and flew me to Dublin. They were trying to impress me, of course; I was crossing the Irish Sea in a helicopter, but I was wondering, ‘What am I in for here?’

I’m not sure where the meeting took place. Some estate, a manor house outside Dublin. All the lads in the Drumaville Consortium were there, and Niall was, too. As the helicopter landed I saw that he was a few feet away, beside the helipad, waiting with the other people. I got out of the helicopter, kissed the ground and blessed everybody.

‘The Pope has arrived.’

Slates Paddy Crerand & co for being out of touch then slates Rooney & co for not doing things as they were done 'in his day'.

I have no idea either, yet.
Must admit I agree with him on the old boys mafia thing. There's half a dozen people still involved with the club that can't give an honest, straight forward opinion probably for fear of getting canned.

They would be the club 'ambassadors' or whatever they are called? They are the last half dozen blokes you should expect objectivity from, in fairness.

Roy seems to have real issues. He advocates and vilifies the same thing depending on his mood or perspective. When someone shows a lack of loyalty he bemoans it, and when someone shows loyalty he bemoans it. Not even Paddy Crerand takes Paddy Crerand's opinions on United seriously. It's his shtick.

He always has to say that bid additional which is quite unnecessary, doesn't he? Everybody knows Paddy's commentary or opinions are biased. Hardly a big deal. The addition of word 'mafia' is the unnecessary bit. Yes United have employed lot of former players in some roles and they try to present positive picture. What's wrong with that? Does he expect everyone to idiotically go on complaining about everything like he does?

It's downright idiotic. If Man Utd mafia is out, I wonder what he calls the Liverpool gang. @SteveJ correctly pointed out what I felt while reading. feck you Paddy, it's 19 fecking 76, but feck you Wayne, back in my day it was not on. Shut up Keano, please.

Candor can be admired, but Keane has devolved into a sick, bitter fukk.

But he was one helluva footballer, wasn't he?

and he has to add that negative bit about everyone..as if pure praise of someone will hamper the supposed image he has created for himself.
He has problem with class of 92, Scholes's image as perceived in media, everything. Same Scholes about whom he had said few years back: "..an amazingly gifted player who remained unaffected human being." Now he is suddenly finding something 'affected' about Scholes.

Its quite sad how Keano, one of my fav players has slipped into this bitter caustic world of his. A psychiatrist will have a field day with him.

I think ten years down the road, Fergie will have to, once again, bail him out of his problems. No one else will be magnanimous to do it after he has burnt his bridges with the United Mafia.

Does he ever think of any reasons behind the things / changes happening which he doesn't like?

Players from both Manchester clubs meeting sometimes after matches? OMG! Never happened during his time? All credit to you for that Roy!

Maybe if back then us and City had some Spaniards/Argentinians, etc. then they would have met up, too. Foreign players meeting their countrymen who live in the same city, I for one am shocked!

After a failed managerial career he has to cash out on something.

Not many bridges left to burn though, next book it'll be slagging off the receptionist, canteen chef and his paper boy.

On a confrontation with Coppell
The whole Coppell confrontation had me crying with laughter, especially Van Der Gow's reaction. Priorities. I really enjoyed the book, and like others have said its both sad how he can alienate people but admirable that he's able to be honest about his mistakes and shortcomings.

Who's left to criticise at United for Roy?

Busby boys will probably the next target.

I finished his book the other day, and it's not as sensationalist and shocking as you'd think.

Keane has incredible high standards, and he really beats himself up when he fails to live up to his own expectations. His mistake is thinking everyone else should abide by his standards/morals. Call them whatever you like. He has a hard time differentiating between when to pursue something and when to let it go. And a hard time reading between the lines.

But as I said before, he really does have a kind of...self resentment for when he lets himself/others down.

Good book, but the first was better (in terms of 'shocking' material).

I love Keane but I still think the stuff with Nani and the red card was him being a bitter cnut and taking a chance to revel in Fergie's misfortune.

When asked if Keane could ever see himself managing United in the future, Keane told The Telegraph firmly: 'Not if Ferguson's still around.'

I don't think Ferguson is the only reason he won't manage United :wenger:

I agree about his comments on the United "mafia". Crerand is long passed his sell by date. What he is still doing on MUTV is beyond me. The man is clueless.

I'm going through the book now and really enjoying it. I agree with you that he has really high standard and he struggles to accept people who don't meet those standards. There is part of him too that is pure determination and blinkered. I think in part that made him a great midfielder but when dealing with people it ruins relationships and alienates people. He can go from being a great man to saying things like "I hated dealing with the families of fellow pros in my role as captain." I find the way he speaks about Bruce lead me to believe that Bruce is a much better man manager on all levels. He is a little bipolar if you ask me.

I agree. He judges himself by his own standards, fails, and then that failure manifests itself into something ugly, like the Queiroz rant on the training pitch, or the rant he had at SAF and Gill, or the way he handled the Yorke thing.

He will always be remembered for a truly great player. I just hope he doesn't tarnish himself too much with his post-playing publicity/comments/books.

Of course he will.

By anyone capable of judging how good a footballer is by how well he plays football anyway.
When talking about his football days, yes he will be remembered as a fantastic player. However when talking about Keane nowadays all people talk about is his temperament, bitterness and his feud with Fergie rather than his footballing ability. Some United fans have already turned their backs on him and it’s only a matter of time before he does or says something that turns the majority of fans against him.

Liam Brady and John Giles were critical of how Ireland played against Germany but it was Eamon Dunphy who really was the lead voice dampening down the mood of the nation. Keane had a very gentle dig back when asked ablout it.

"Do you know what? It's just an opinion. It's what football is about. These guys are entitled to their opinion. They've played at a decent level. Well, two of them have played at a decent level."

For a man that is saying he isn't trying to sell a book, he is doing a very good job of... selling his book! Fair play, I'm reading it.

Completely wrong about Nani, saying he should have gone is one thing (foot was high) but saying he meant it - sorry Roy, not every player wants to try and injure someone :nervous:
