Sexual abuse of young players | Bennell gets 31 years (expected to serve 15) | Dead

Lot of rumours doing the rounds that Gary Speed was one of his victims. Not sure if it's just journo conjecture but it would seem to make sense of his suicide. Horrendous thought, someone being so broken by the abuse that they can only see one way out. Poor, poor guy.
 
In a way doing that is surely the worst thing he can do if he feared vigilante attacks.

As now, they've listed the town he's in, listed his alias name, and all the stories are confirming that he's out of jail, when surely most would think he's long still banged up.

Best bet for him now is to be arrested, and back where he belongs.

Maybe his MBE could be revoked, or possibly his existence.

As far as Bennell's concerned, I think it's possible and reasonable to be appalled by what he did/seems to have done while still feeling some pity for him. Less than for his alleged victims, of course, but I wonder how others would have done while under the same unconscious urgings as someone - allegedly- like that.

Bristow is out of touch, can't say I'm too angry about his comments, they show a huge amount of ignorance though and maybe he'll learn something from this.

He said that it wouldn't happen to darts players as they were really men, he also said it wouldn't happen in Rugby to which Brian Moore replied to him, he was also a victim

I doubt he'll be alone thinking that way. Don't think he has a remote understanding of the damage done to an innocent young kid- lasting damage that beating the guy up years down the line won't solve alone.

Have I missed the part where darts is a tough guy, "man sport"?

I've never really followed it but always took it for a game of overweight alcoholics filling air space on paid for channels in between real sporting events?

Clowns like him are the reason people are afraid to come with their stories and adds to the sickness in our societies which allows these creatures to get away with their scum for so long.

This whole topic is horrible but thank goodness those footballers have the courage to tell the truth publicly. This can only help make football and other sports safer for children and youths, but the deeply sad reality underlying all of this is that such perpetrators are protected for a number of reasons.
One of these is that the people around them who weren't doing anything wrong but turned a blind eye felt that it would reflect on them if the truth came out. Cowardly but sadly part of human nature. I suppose Dario Gradi falls into this category, and I hope that was the reason why he didn't want to know - bad as his probably deliberate 'ignorance' was. Shockingly football coaches and such evil 'celebrities' as Jimmy Saville are the tip of the iceberg apparently.
There are some brave people putting information about politicians (not all of them deceased) from all levels and entertainers (from the UK and other countries) out there, but given the power, money and lawyers these people have it is very difficult to bring them to justice and to public awareness. The Savilles and Gary Glitters are exposed while so many get away. But it's a legal and other kinds of minefields to do anything about it.

I think you're underestimating how skillful the game actually is. It's not the '80s, they don't smoke and drink on stage any more. There's big money involved, so with that comes professionalism.

Anyway, not to divert the thread...

Even though he was safely away from Bennell, he still couldn't tell anyone what he'd gone through and ended up drinking away his chances of a possible career.

You could level that accusation at several sports tbf. Hitting a target the size of a cigarette filter from 8 feet with a dart is bloody difficult!
 
I'm now starting to understand why parents can appear to be overly-protective. If it's so widespread in such a common area, what about other areas where children are involved?

True, and you need to do it consistently or you lose to the other guy that does but that doesn't mean that the game is any more skillful or "manly" as other sports.

The manly line is absurd, but Bristow has shown himself to be a real dinosaur. In his day he played in working men's clubs etc...Women were barred from my dad's snooker club when I was growing up.

fecking hell, that's bad. Reminds me of what we hear now about Saville, about how so many small rumours were abound but people never really thought all that much of it until they realised the scale.

You do wonder if abuse was rife in other sports too.

Can you imagine as an investigator having to view photos or video footage of this stuff if available in a case they're working on? Horrific
