Sir Matt Busby's plaque removed from Old Trafford directors’ box

A plaque commemorating Sir Matt Busby has been removed from the directors’ box at Old Trafford .

His grandchildren have also been told they will no longer have access to seats there.

The move - particularly the removal of the plaque - is said to have saddened some members of the surviving Busby family.

Sir Matt is still revered by United fans for reviving the Reds after the 1958 Munich air disaster in which he was seriously hurt and which claimed 23 lives, including eight players.

He recovered and went on to build a new, all-conquering team built around Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and George Best.

After his retirement, a plaque was mounted on his seat in the director’s box - one of four seats said to have been used by the family there.

Sir Matt’s children Sandy and Sheena used the seats until their deaths while his seven grandchildren also used them until this season.

A bronze statue of Sir Matt, which was erected in 1996 following his death two years earlier, remains outside the stadium.

But Amanda Eustace, who is Sandy’s daughter and Sir Matt’s grandaughter, told the M.E.N: “My dad always said it was a privilege to have those box tickets. We have been extremely grateful to United for what they have given us over the past years.

“We do still have season tickets, which is absolutely fantastic.”

Another source told the M.E.N: “For over 40 years Matt Busby’s family have had a table in the directors suite at Old Trafford, with four tickets in the directors’ box.

"These have been used by Matt himself, by his son Sandy and daughter Sheena. Since they have both died the grandchildren have had access to those tickets. That was until last season.

“The powers that be at Old Trafford have decided to call time on this and have told the families they wont be getting any tickets this year.

“Worse than that they have removed the plaques on the seats, including the one with Sir Matt Busby’s name on.

“That name has been on his seat for nearly 50 years - so who is going to sit there now?”

The M.E.N. has contacted United for a comment.

@decorativeed:

The term 'plaque' is not really accurate. In the director's box there are a number of seats with small name plaques on the underside. Since the leather seating went in there they had names on those seats. Some say 'Sir Alex Ferguson', 'Sir Bobby Charlton', others say 'Edwards Family', others said 'Busby Family'. The seats themselves can't be more than 10 years old, and the name plaque certainly hasn't been there for 50.

Sadly, last year both of Sir Matt's children died, but before then they could give those allocated seats out to family members if they were not going themselves. Now that they've died, and the grandchildren outnumber the amount of seats in the director's box and there's nobody to allocate them fairly, so United have given the family a number of season tickets instead, as they say in the article. It's just crap sensationalist journalism from the MEN again.

Edit: Here's a photo of the kind of seat name plate this 'plaque' actually is that the article refers to (no idea who the bloke is, by the way):

What the feck?!

They'll be chopping the head off the statue of Sir Alex, as if he's Jebediah Springfield next.

I'm avoiding this thread like the plaque.

Not only should the plaque (obviously) not be removed, but the family should have as many tickets as they want for as long as they want.

Would like to see the club comment on this.

Unless there's a very valid reason it's awful.

This. Why on earth would they do this? If anything it's shit PR!

I would happily keep a Busby plague at Old Trafford, so a plaque is a no-brainer.

The removal of the plaque is in poor taste and baffling (perhaps it'll be relocated) but the removal of the free box for the descendents is acceptable in my opinion.

There's probably more to this story. Can't imagine the club risking such a move for PR reasons.

Yeah but if each of his 7 grandchildren has 2 kids then that's 14 tickets and if each of them has 2 kids that's 28 tickets and if they have 2 kids that is 50k tickets and we'll struggle to make a profit.

So United had 4 seats reserved for Busby and his family... There was a name plaque on one of them...
Now that Sir Matt and both his kids are dead, that is being removed .. the seat is no longer reserved.
It had to happen sometime..
It really isnt a big story... unless there is more to it.

EDIT: its not like United are removing Busby's name from the club.. one of Jose's first interviews, where he called united a BIG BIG club (or something), was with the 68 team photo as the backdrop..

The seat was reserved. it no longer it. Would be weird if someone else was given a seat with Sir Matt's name on it.

'United fat cats SLAMMED by Busby babe!'

Why on Earth those feckers did that? 4 free tickets out of 75k means nothing for a club as rich as United.

Why is this guy reporting the story? Isn't Luckhurst the MEN United reporter

After reading the post, this is all a bit less dramatic than the title suggests

So they still have season tickets and the grandchildren just don't get a directors box anymore? Doesn't seem like a big deal

As is often the case with stories like this there will be more to it than what is been reported.

The grandchildren have just been moved out of the directors box it seems into normal season tickets

Agreed that 3rd generation family who have personally contributed nothing should not expect a free box!

Also agree that's it's a lousy and distasteful thing to remove the plaque.

This is how I feel.

I imagine the four seats were for him, his wife and two kids. They have passed on now, and Sir Matt has a statue and a road named after. He's still very much part of the club

Yeah this sounds like the most logical explanation.

I don't understand the plaque thing but I'm totally for removing the family members. They are 7 grandchildren and will soon be more. Can't have 3rd/4th generations just sitting in the directors box.

And they say Mourinho isn't anti-youth...

Not sure if it's just me... but I don't really see the big deal.

This plaque is one of the less significant things related to Sir Matt at the club. We have a fecking statue of the great man at Old Trafford. The stadium is on a road named after him... this just doesn't seem significant at all. Who here even knew there was a seat with Sir Matt's name plaque on until now?
