BBC News - Bond film called Skyfall

Name of the new James Bond film.

Does it still have legs? I feel like it's going on for the sake of it, I'm not too particularly fond of Craig as Bond. I feel like the older films had something the new ones don't. Or is it just a nostalgia thing?

I'm a big fan of Daniel Craig, have been since Our Friends in the North. I was really excited when he got the role and I haven't been disappointed. I thought Casino Royale was the best Bond movie for years. Quantum of Solace had a weaker story, but he was still great in it.

Apparently there are only 5 Ian Flemming titles left and this is one of them. My worry is that they are all short stories (one is called "007 in London" FFS) and that they are scraping the bottom of the barrel a bit now.

That said, with Sam Mendes on board the direction should be good. Really surprised to hear they were filing for bankruptcy protection after Casino Royale; that movie played everywhere for ages and must have sold an absolute ton of blu rays.

It's a nostalgia thing. Some of them are absolutely terrible. I still love them, though.

I like Craig as Bond. Casino Royale was a pleasant change. The follow up not so much.

As a Bond fan, I will watch this, regardless.

I Don't mind Daniel Craig. I enjoyed both his movies.

Some of those gadgets in those old movies makes me cringe.

Daniel Craig's Bond is a response to the marker laid down by Jason Bourne in my opinion.

It's far grittier, and a vast improvement on the days of Brosnan where Goldeneye was the only decent film. The gadgets got ridiculous - invisible cars and surfing on the door is the imagination of a child.

For me, Craig is the best Bond, I just hope that they don't ruin his tenure with the re-introduction of M and the gadget side of things with the new on, as I have read it will head in this direction.

Good points there. I don't mind gadgets myself, every secret agent must have them. But there should be a limit. Some of the earlier movies had cringeworthy gadgets that seemed purpose built for each specific situation - not very realistic at all. More intelligent use of tech is fine by me.

I'm looking forward to Skyfall and I think Daniel Craig's Bond has brought some necessary changes to the franchise. Hope this one is closer to Casino Royale than Quantum of Solace in quality.

Agree with all points. The Brosnan flicks were so so bad and I like Daniel Craig as Bond. As much as I'm still fond of the pre-Brosnan Bond flicks, Daniel Craig and the whole franchise are offering something new now because it was getting kind of stale. Though my favorite still is Mishter Connery.

Well QoS was a decent 'watchable' film in my opinion, nothing special and wasn't a patch on the brilliant Casino Royale, which I'm still pinning hopes on that 'Skyfall' will be able to replicate or even better! But with Ralph Fiennes and Javier Bardem playing the villains (Ralph is a villain, it's just not mentioned in that BBC article) in this movie it's definitely going a step in the right direction.

Do you mean Q? M has been in the previous two movies  If it is Q can we expect John Cleese back?

But have to agree on Craig being the best Bond, the recent adaptation of Bond has kind of ruined the older ones for me, but in a good way!

And all that money went to - say it with me now - service the debt. Held by multiple parties. The whore - I mean whole - reason it's been so long since QoS has been that they've been fighting over who gets exactly how much.

It's also probably the reason the new movie "has nothing to do" with the other two. I think they had a good thing going with the whole global sinister organization. But now it sounds like they're scrapping that entirely and going back to villain-of-the-week.

They hired a sizable chunk of the Bourne staff for QoS. Which made it really weird watching that movie right after Bourne Ultimatum.

And new Bond's already used quite a few gadgets, just in subtler ways compared to the good old wink-nudge-this'll-come-in-handy-around-minute-forty-eight-trust-me-Jimmy-old-chap.

In the current films he just uses the gadget, end of. Which is pretty nice.

Apologies, I meant Q rather than M!!

Interesting that a lot of the Bourne staff were hired, I didn't know that but it makes perfect sense.

I used to like the gadgets when I watched the Bond films as a kid - but now they make the films lose credibility.

I much prefer a Bond that is skilled in Krav Maga (or similar) and looks like he's been in a fight - it makes it more "believable." Perhaps that is what a lot of Bond fans don't want.

Will be interesting to see how Q's re-introduction plays out, and how ridiculous they get. Frankly I hope they'll continue to play it down and have them used subtly.

The reinvention of the franchise has worked in a similar way to how Nolan put a more realistic, grittier spin on the Batman films.

Craig is more akin to the Bond of the books to me more than any other. Also Albert Finney is in it as M's boss.

Yeah I'm looking forward to it. I looked at my OP in this thread and don't remember ever having that opinion really. I'm still not too sure about Craig as Bond but I do love James Bond films.

I can't get into the older ones and Brosnan's films are far too cheesy. Craig's re-invigorated it and I think he's excellent. CR is the best Bond film I've seen, QoS was disappointing but still a decent film.

I grew up with Brosnan as Bond though so that's kind of how I see him. I don't mind them trying to get gritty but not too gritty. Bond is all about the over the top villain, gadgets, etc..

I love the old films because I remember watching them all with my old man as a kid, they were basically terrible cheesy films but just had something about them which made them fun.

Goldeneye aside, the Brosnan ones were just bad, and the reinvention of the franchise centred around Craig had a fantastic start but as others have said QoS was poor. The trailer for Skyfall looks good, and the positive reviews are a good sign too. Very much looking forward to seeing it.

It's better now for me. The earliest ones with Connery were great as he was a brilliant Bond, but they got more and more cheesy along the way. I like Craig's Bond and the series needed some fresh blood anyway.

Looking forward to this one, supposed to be rather good and with a bad guy like you know who, well... should be worth watching just for that!

I've been re-watching a lot of the old Bond movies recently and the sexism in them is unbelievable. Spanking lady masseurs arses as they walk off, throttling a woman for information and then throwing her onto the bed before forcibly getting into her pants.

You'd never ever get away with this now!

Supposed to be really good. Javier Bardem is epic in No Country for Old Men so he should be good as the bad guy.
