We appear to have a clear divide on this forum;
Poster 1. “The Glazers have been penny-pinching and the recent ‘spending spree’ figures are artificially inflated by the fact we spent so little for so long and transfer inflation” (My View)
Poster 2. “The Glazers have spent more than enough money and the problem is various managers have wasted it”
This is not another thread debating the above viewpoints.
The purpose of this thread is to determine now what the general consensus is on what an acceptable level of spending is in the summer transfer window
Now I get that people will say “it’s not the level of investment, it’s getting it right” which is obviously fair but the counter-argument is that if we do pick up a few bargains, more should be spent elsewhere as we clearly need several players
It’s also not a thread to debate WHO we should sign, I believe the club should have a long-list of targets given the number of scouts we employ and our obvious weaknesses in certain positions
So - what do we all broadly agree is an acceptable level of ambition in terms of investment?
I’ll start the bidding at £200m for the following reasons;
- We spent a pitiful amount last summer
- We have struggled this season and underachieved
- We can’t argue the manager doesn’t have the confidence of the Board as he’s just been appointed!
- Two regular starters are approaching mid-30s, several players are out of contract and Valencia will not be renewed
