Ok, here are my findings based on the league table as it stands right now.

Pete's system:
Chelsea 5
Man Utd 1
Arsenal -5
Liverpool -9

Rowem's system:
Chelsea 4.5
Man Utd -0.25
Arsenal -5
Liverpool -9.25

This is good news for us and bad news for Arsenal and Liverpool compared to the predetermined ranking stuff, so I suggest we stick with this method from now on.
So you've just done it by the table as it stands each week?

That's seems a good compromise, and a lot simpler than the weighting thing I was suggesting. Over the course of the season it will converge more and more with the reality of who is actually middle 8 /bottom 8 quality.

What do you think Mike? Do you agree there's an issue here? I mean, even this season we were debating how to score City as no-one knew how they'd perform. If some crap club get bought and hundreds of mil spent on them over the summer, it seems silly to spend the whole season pretending it hasn't happened.

Yes, makes sense. Although this season the adjusted league table probably isn't going to tell us anything the actual league table won't.

Yes, you always use the current standings. It's obviously a crap method early in the season, but it should be quite good at this stage. In fact I have a strong urge to do this for previous seasons, ie to compare adjusted mid-season tables to actual final tables, but that sounds like a whole lot of work.

The idea is nice, but the implementation is a bit spastic...

.... and the postings in this thread make it looks more spastic.
There's something fairly amusing about this.

Liverpool's is great reading, they've only gained points twice, once at West Ham which the system is rating much too highly.

The rest of us look about right to me, based on how we all seem to have played.

There's now a massive difference in the gaps to Chelsea in Peter and Rowem's Current Table Adjustoramas:

Peter:
Chelsea 2
Arsenal -4
Man Utd -5
Liverpool -13

Rowem:
Chelsea -0.25
Man Utd -2.5
Arsenal -3
Liverpool -12.25

Liverpool's is great reading, they've only gained points twice, once at West Ham which the system is rating much too highly.
Here they haven't even gained points once in Peter's system, because Everton and West Ham are doing worse than predicted, and only a couple of single and half points in Rowem's.

Yes, we've had enough matches now that the league's starting to catch up with the reality of teams' form.

 Look at Liverpool... what a bunch of hapless cnuts!

I'd be interested to see the results by the Pillory method.

West Ham is the sticking point in PeterStorey's system. Otherwise it's pretty damn good way of telling who has the upper hand. In anycase it's clear Chelsea have the run at the moment.

Rather than continuing to include Liverpool in this list, MikeupNorth would now be better off adding in Villa (-7).

Villa are only 1 point behind Man. Utd in this system !!

For my own amusement I've calculated Spurs at -9 currently, but even that is still +9 better than Liverpool.

Villa would be much better included than Liverpool, I agree, however these Mancs find some curious pleasure in highlighting Liverpool's difficulties.

However, focusing on where Spurs appear in this scenario is frankly disgustingly self indulgent of you.

The Chavs have the upper hand ... because they are 4 points ahead of us. i could have told you that just by looking at the league table - it took me just 2 seconds and I did need the pythagorus binary bollox formulae concocted above!

Obviously.Any measure of performance must be based upon actual results.Pete's sytem is not meant to be perfect, if it were you would be able now to predict the table in mid May 2010.

What Pete's system does though,is to weight those early season games according to the relative difficulty of the tie so as to give a better guide just from a few results as to the likely table come the season's end. It's a good guide and easier to understand than Daniel Finkelstein's Fink tank.As the season progresses it should converge with the actual league table.
As I said back then......as time goes by the different systems should converge reaching a singular view come the time the result is known

This year's not been as useful as last year when under PeterStorey's system United were about 4 or 5 points clear of Liverpool when the league table showed that Liverpool were 4 points clear.

Well, that has a lot of do with our strange fixture last season of playing everyone in the top half away in the first half of the season.

Course and it was reflected by Peter's system. But it didn't stop the doom-mongers and the media from writing us off and many predicting it was Liverpool's title.

Arsenal have overtaken Chelsea in both systems. MUP hasn't updated his, but I'm pretty sure it now is
Arsenal 2
Chelsea 0
United -3
Liverpool - 100

Is there any reason not to switch Brum and WHU and also Fulham and Everton? It wouldn't involve much work to recalculate the numbers and would reflect the difficulty more accurately, I think.

The adjusted "adjusted league table"

This is something that kept me entertained while in the newbies.

In no way will this thread predict who will win the title or make any sort of accurate calculations on the amount of points teams will collect at the end of the season. Neither will it show what team is the most favourable or on course to win the Premier League.

It's sole purpose is the fact that I am bored, and that the circumstances which define Peters table have changed because variable change was not taken into account from the beginning. For example Birmingham (the most in form team at the moment) 25/33 points in last 11, are considered a bottom 8 team and Liverpool haven't been a top 4 team since the start of the season. Also I will use the scores for Spurs City and Villa as they are the only probable teams with the ability to make the Top 4 this season.

So I decided to make another table where the positions of the teams will be looked at according to the actual Premier League table every five games. The scoring principle will be the same.

Win home fixtures (57 pts)
Win away fixtures v bottom 8 (24 pts)
Draw away fixtures v middle 8 (8 pts)
Lose away fixtures v other top 4 (0pts)

After 5:
So the first five weeks the teams will be grouped like in Peters table.
Top Four: Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool
Middle Eight: Everton, Man City, Spurs, Aston Villa, Fulham, West Ham, Sunderland, Stoke
Bottom Eight: Wigan, Blackburn, Bolton, Hull, Portsmouth, Burnley, Wolves, Birmingham

Chelsea +6
Hull (h) 0
Sunderland (a) +2
Fulham (a) +2
Burnley (h) 0
Stoke (a) +2

Arsenal +1
Everton (a) +2
Portsmouth (h) 0
Man Utd (a) 0
Man City (a) -1
Wigan (h) 0

City 0
Blackburn (a) 0
Wolves (h) 0
Portsmouth (a) 0
Arsenal (h) 0
United (a) 0

United -1
Birmingham (h) 0
Burnley (a) -3
Wigan (a) 0
Arsenal (h) 0
Spurs (a) +2

Villa -1
Wigan (h) -3
West Ham (a) -1
Liverpool (a) +3
Fulham (h) 0
Birmingham (a) 0

Spurs -1
Liverpool (h) 0
Hull (a) 0
West Ham (a) +2
Birmingham (h) 0
United (h) -3

Liverpool -4
Spurs (a) -1
Stoke (h) 0
Villa (h) -3
Bolton (a) 0
Burnley (h) 0

At this point the Premier League table is like this:

Code:
[COLOR="Blue"]1 	Chelsea 	 	  15
2 Manchester United 12
3 Manchester City 12

After 10:
Top Four: Man Utd, Chelsea, Man City, Spurs
Middle Eight: Burnley, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Fulham, Wigan, Sunderland, Stoke

So we calculate:

And how is the Leeds defeat going to be factored in?
Timely question!

Is there any reason not to switch Brum and WHU and also Fulham and Everton? It wouldn't involve much work to recalculate the numbers and would reflect the difficulty more accurately, I think.
I was thinking about this. PS's system has three tiers, Rowem's has four and that was meant to be a more nuanced and precise representation of the league. But right now it looks to me like it makes more sense to part them in three, like this;
Top Four: Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool
Middle Eight: Everton, Man City, Spurs, Aston Villa, Fulham, Sunderland, Stoke, Birmingham
Bottom Eight: Wigan, Blackburn, Bolton, Hull, Portsmouth, Burnley, Wolves, West Ham

To do so with Rowem's system would take some rearrangements of the whole thing though. I suppose a 4-4-4-8 is more accurate than a 4-4-6-6, or a 4-3-5-8. I don't feel that Fulham or Birmingham belong with Villa etc, and if any of the lower middle team does, it's Everton. They've just been unlucky with injuries.
Bottom 6: Pompey, Hull, Burnley, Wolves, Bolton, West Ham, Blackburn, Wigan
Lower middle 6: Everton, Stoke, Sunderland, Birmingham
Upper middle 4: Fulham, Aston Villa, Spurs, Man City
Top 4: Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool

So while Peter's system can adapt to the realities quite easily, it's a bit messier for Rowem's.

Perhaps post it like this?

Win home fixtures (57 pts)
Win away fixtures v bottom 8 (24 pts)
Draw away fixtures v middle 8 (8 pts)
Lose away fixtures v other top 4 (0pts)
