Sócrates (maverick) - has a solid defensive platform behind him, allowing him the freedom to express himself and attack. Surrounded by hard-working, technically-blessed and creative players to link up with. Two prolific marksmen ahead of him to finish all the chances he creates.

Inzaghi (liability) - strike partner to the industrious Kempes, who will assist and create spaces for Inzaghi. Inzaghi has a wealth of supply too (accurate crosses, through balls, cut backs, long balls and set piece specialists to feed off).

I have nothing to hide... the player's roles/team shape pick themselves (Stielike and Briegel do give me positional versatility though, at CB/FB/DM).

Image created on microsoft paint (copy and pasting) - I can't do those fancy formations with player faces and arrows.

Also, didn’t Inzaghi have a second striker behind him? I can’t see how Kempes next to him helps either of them.

Kempes wasn't your typical forward: he can play off a striker (high energy, hard-working foil), wide (stretching play and cutting in), withdrawn role (creative and marauding slalom runs from deep, or powerful long shots) or centrally (target man role for direct balls, dangerous aerially). Possessing impressive defensive workrate, Kempes is the on-ball forward, as opposed to Inzaghi's off-ball movement and positioning. Kempes will also combine in the left channels with Coluna and Briegel.

I always preferred Inzaghi with an industrious supporting attacker and roving creative playmaker behind.

I’m not doubting either pick but Kempes was better as an attacking midfielder. Apart from 73-81 his goal ratio was decent at best.

Didn’t Inzaghi have Del Piero playing him through? He was also a bit further back.

Kempes is best as a forward (neither a #10 or #9).

In that Juve side, Del Piero was the supporting forward. Zidane was the attacking midfielder.
