I enjoyed every second of it. Wayne fecking Rooney.
Thanks. I’ll listen to this tomorrow while I’m working. Rooney knows football and I like his opinions on it

I saw some quote on Twitter that he said he’d want to be the Man City assistant manager? Was that taken out of context?

He was asked if he'd ever consider being an assistant and he said as long as it was for a manager like Pep. Not as outrageous as everyone is making out. Basically said that Peps assistants learn so much from him that they become excellent managers in their own right. He used Arteta as an example.

Feel like a lot of his success was glossed over in that interview and we dipped straight to the tougher moments, he was the poster boy for our club in the 2000's and not much was said about becoming captain, top scorer for club and country and his better moments.

Whilst it's what he wants, he seems a little unsure of himself as a manager and doesn't know what kind of job he wants. Don't think he'll be successful, unfortunately.

Enjoyed that! Thanks for sharing.

Was really sad hearing talk about how the younger players were dancing in the dressing room the day after losing to Liverpool. Sigh

A great watch, pretty damning but not suprising to hear players had already given up on Managers before they even set foot in the door.

You can tell Keane respects Rooney a lot.

I have to be honest, I absolutely hated it when he put in a transfer request. But looking back, he saw a lot of things coming that we had suffered with over the last decade. In a way, he was proven right and I no longer have that anger towards him as I did in his final 5 years or so.

His inability to look after his own body played a big part in part of our decline. He was the captain and he was finished as a top level player by the time he was 30. All well and good to complain about people dancing but he didn’t keep himself in shape at all.

Very true. He went from being one of my favourite players on the team to me cringing when I saw him play at times, was a shadow of himself. 2004-2010 Rooney > 2011 onwards. At least he admits he wasn't a top professional in terms of taking care of himself.

However I was only talking about the transfer saga, have to give him credit for seeing it coming.

Many fans do too. I don't see it as damning against the players though, it's damning against the choice of manager. Would you give (e.g.) Frank Lampard time to prove himself if he were appointed here in the summer?

I'm sure we've all had jobs where some muppet was over promoted, then multiply that by an overtly success based model such as football and short playing careers. Players have every right to be concerned in that scenario.

Most players don't get into adult football teams until 20/22 sort of age bracket. He was playing PL by 16. His body did 14 years before the decline. That's enough isn't it.

Come on...you shouldn't have been so dependent on just one individual or replaced them better. He himself says in the video that he was benched for Zlatan, another aging striker.

Sorry to be pedantic but he was cooked by 2014, so 12 years and age 28, but yes, he had done enough by then. If Rooney was African I'm sure there would be people questioning his birth certificate.

The problem was he wanted to continue as though he was still in his peak, as did the club. He should've gone when Moyes took over as the decline was already evident by then but instead we had to endure him stinking the place out for another four seasons while no-one seemed to want to acknowledge what we were all seeing. "My captain shall always play".

His ego contributed to that, same as Shearer when he was declining and still captaining England, but if he had looked after himself he might not have been quite so much like a pub player in those latter years.

But then that's also the history of the club post-fergie - accepting of mediocre and/or selfish performances on the pitch. Lingard, Pogba, Rashford being the poster boys. Hopefully we'll finally see the end to that this summer. Beans beans beans.

He was probably amongst the better footballers during Moyes's season.

But then really dropped off hugely after. In the long run selling him at the same time Fergie left would have made far more sense as we would have made some money out of him at least and Moyes wasn't working out either way.

It was more the timing of his new contract after Ferguson left than anything. The club put him on a pedestal with that as the example for the rest of the squad, and it was just when he'd reached the point his body had caught up with him and he couldn't really lead by example anymore. The same thing had happened to Rio, Vidic, Evra, Carrick at around the same time so we had a bunch of leaders who couldn't lead by example, a bunch of players who needed leading, and whatever Fellaini was meant to be.

But the reason he didn’t manage his decline is because he clearly didn’t look after himself off the pitch. His last top class season was at 26.

No, but none of that absolves Rooney from his inability to look after himself. The fact he was benched for a player who was older further proves the point.

Rooney should have looked after himself better, but him being benched for an older Zlatan for me doesn't prove anything. Ibra was an anomaly for how long his body held up. At 40, he was still a useful player for Milan.

Enjoyable episode. I do wish they covered more of the highs prior to Rooney 1st asking to leave and then SAF retiring.

It's interesting that he mentioned a few times how his relationship with SAF was never the same after he asked to leave the 1st time. If the club adequately replaced Ronaldo/Tevez, I'm pretty sure Rooney doesn't get that new contract and SAF would have happily sold him.

Him talking how players never gave Moyes a chance is also incredible. Makes the Moyes thing even more puzzling honestly. Still can't believe he was hired as the successor to SAF of all managers.

Also, Van Gaal is crazy  . I'm shocked he didn't lose the dressing room right away. Insane training methods.

Personally, I think the 1st 8 or so months of 2011 is the best Rooney played. He was a bit less explosive, but I thought he had an even extra bit of ingenuity to his game and he was a more controlled player utilizing his best attributes.

He started the 2011-2012 Prem season on fire too. Had back-to-back hat-tricks. He suffered an injury prior to the Anfield game and was never really the same after that.

It was an example of one player who looked after his body versus a player who didn’t. You don’t have to be exactly like Zlatan to perform better than Rooney did after 2012.

Fair enough, but Ibra is one of the best ever in this regard. Not many better than him and he's a physical specimen. Rooney much less so. Which again does prove your point: He should have looked after himself better. He had it in him to play top level football into his mid 30's imo considering his all-around talent, but he let himself down. Still a great career either way.

I still hate it as I feel it's a black mark on his legacy at the club. Of course we love Rooney but he's not loved on the same level as the likes of Sir Bobby and George Best when honestly he should be on that level. He's our greatest goal scorer of all time. There shouldn't even be a debate on whether he should get a statue at OT.

If he hadn't had c. 10-12 years of top class level football then Id perhaps lean to your thinking but he gave more than most players did/do to football and he's one of the best players in your and PL history. Not every player is built to be playing into their late 30s or even mid 30s and nor should they feel obliged to.

He managed 21 and then 18 goal contributions in his last 2 seasons for United which is pretty good still.

To be fair, that's just impossible considering Sir Bobby's history and his efforts during and after the Munich Air Disaster.

It's not the same obviously, but I don't think Barcelona fans care at all that Messi requested to leave in 2020. I don't know why people still see it as a black mark. He was right. He went about it the wrong way maybe(there was probably no right way to go about it), but we weren't showing ambition as a club. If the club(Glazers) did, we probably have 2 more Premier League titles and potentially another CL title.

They may have if he’d been flirting with Real Madrid.
Well Rooney didn't flirt with Liverpool, and I don't think it was ever confirmed from Rooney himself that he was flirting with City(correct me if I'm wrong). He stated Real Madrid and Barcelona were interested in the video. I didn't recall him mentioning City.

He probably wouldn’t admit it though. At the time the only talk was Man City.

I don't disagree with that and I'm not criticising him. Ferguson leaving, other players retiring or being past their best, and Rooney's new contract all coincided with each other, and it also coincided with when Rooney really began to decline as a player himself. It was just bad timing.

Getting the big new deal meant he was the first in the firing line when things didn't go well (especially as fans still remembered the awful way him and his agent handled the previous contract deal), and as he's said himself, he was contending not only with his own abilities not being what they were, but going from team mates like Scholes, Ronaldo, Vidic etc. To clowns who dance around the dressing room after losing to a rival.

Funnily enough even with the fitness issues I think he was a better professional than a lot of the players we've had since. You could never accuse him of not caring or not being focused on the pitch, or not playing for the team, or being more concerned with his clothing brand than his football.

He was also the first in line for this current era of online United fans who seem to pick and target our better players for criticism, rather than recognising that the fact half the starting line up would struggle to get a game for Tottenham could be more of the issue.

Personally he's one of my favourite players not just because of what he contributed and for how long, but because he was very much a one off. He'd do things that we just won't see again from another United player

If you believe the reports and interviews he was training and going to reserve matches with the first team players from when he was 14. I remember an older Everton fan raving about him 2 years before he scored that goal against Arsenal.

People also don't take into account his physical build, he's stocky for lack of a better word, but he never suffered many muscle injuries. After 12 years of top level football his body just wasn't capable of carrying him around the pitch the way it once did. There's no shame in that, he was a great player who had a great career, those last few years shouldn't really detract from that.

I like how the conversation didn't lean towards Rooney's views on Ronaldo. Probably sick and tired talking about the guy in any manner or honesty without Ronaldo and his PR team throwing a public tantrum /wobbly.

He needed tough discipline

He'd have lasted longer under Ferguson

I've warmed up to him/how good a player he was a lot more after his retirement. His last couple years here I hated seeing him in the team.

He's a United Legend though, and gave me many happy memories.
