It doesn't matter what is on the seats, officially it's the West Stand, and after renaming the North it proves there is actually no point to naming them North, East, etc.

A huge percentage of stadia call their stands after the compass headings because it helps people to find the locations of the stands. If I'm a tourist or a delivery guy or a businessman about to have a meeting at a stadium, I may well have a map in hand if it's my first time there, using the map and the names of the stands it's as easy and as simple as can be to find where I'm going.... and well, that's the point here.
I couldn't give a shit if it states WEST stand officially because it's simpler that way, because the club recognize that it's the fecking Stretford End in the great way possible, it's doesn't say WEST STAND on those seats does it.

Road names are useful too as you mentioned, but stands aren't always located on roads, and when they aren't, compass headings are used. Anyway, non of this changes anything, I think you're pretty damn aware that North, East, South, West or as you mention yourself, road names, are used to help people find their way around stadiums. If one stand at the end is called the Stretford End and the other is called, say, the Busby End then what difference does that make to it being East or West? If you get to one, and need to get to the other it's pretty clear, unless you are an imbecile, that you need to get to the other end.

Erm, how would that be clear if you don't have a diagram/map of the stadium?
If one end is called "Stretford" and the other "Busby" but you don't have a layout of the stadium.... how the feck would you know where one is just by arriving at another?
If you have no layout of the stadium but arrive at East Stand, it's pretty fecking obvious that West Stand will be opposite. Your failure to understand this is bizarre to say the least, it's like your flogging a dead donkey.

There was no real reason apart from Health and Safety back when they did, you could only access Old Trafford via cars from the one side, and foot access wasn't much easier if I recall just one bridge behind the ground to the Stretford End. Everyone knew you drove up Warwick Road and went via the tunnel or United Road to the Stetford End, no need for compass headings.Don' tell datura this, there can be NO REAL reason for naming them after their compass headings.
However, I'm sure little things like signs might help the day trippers and emergency services to let them know where they are. To rename a stand now, defies the logic of renaming them all years ago, though to be fair the names were those given by fans, and never by the club. I've never used anything other than "tunnel" side for "South Stand", as that's how I have always refered to it. So now we have named one stand lets do the rest, lets get rid of the silly compass headings.
