He was but now it’s iconic  whenever anyone mentions batman that’s the first thing my mind jumps to.

I do get what you mean by the voice, my first introduction to The Witcher has been through The Wild Hunt and the voice to me is part of what makes that character. When Cavill is playing Supes it is quite a slow dry delivery so maybe lower the tone a bit and a bit of growl to it and he might not be too far off.

Well, she is probably the most important character in the entire saga. Large stretches of the books are narrated from her point of view and pretty much all of the plot is either about people wanting to protect her or people wanting to use her. Geralt is the witcher of course and he's still the main man, but if anyone can match him in terms of importance, it's Ciri. She's awesome anyway.

Cavill is a good actor, too bad he had to work under shitty directors when it came to the recent DC movies. This whole thing reminds me that I haven't TW3 DLC's

Same boat, I fired it up the other day as I have one to finish which is Blood and wine. Haven’t played in probably about a year and have forgotten all the controls and the first thing I had to do was fight a vampire. The movement is kind of horrible as well which I never realised before. Considering starting a whole new playthrough but the new Tombraider arrived today so that then RDR 2 back to Wild Hunt, but I’m still addicted to MHW so fitting it all in is an issue. Life getting in the way and all.

Agreed on Cavill, he is a good actor and kinda been tarnished by how rubbish the DC movies have been, hopefully this will be good and I think he’ll be a pretty good Geralt, hope the rest of the cast is quite ambitious casting as well although I think I saw the writer has moved away from Twitter so might not get too many more updates from her.

I'm sure she is, I personally just hope it's about Geralt, because he's awesome :)

Also, I haven't read any of the books.

Geralt and Ciri are part of the same story. It's basically their story, not his or hers, so it will be about both.

Indeed, and it is clear from as early as The Last Wish.

Apparently Cavill is no longer going to be playing Superman in the DCU. Geralt or Superman bit of a tough choice, imagine if he eventually becomes Bond as well.

Hopefully it is a statement of intent from Netflix, hiring Superman. Like they want it to be their ‘Game of Thrones.’

I’m trying not to get my hopes up.

I really, really hope that somehow, they’re able to use some of the same music that was in the game. It’s just too good to imagine not being included in a Witcher series.

I am so wanting this to be good but also expecting it to be dreadful. Having played the series, I love the 'vibe' of the world they've created as well as the lore. There's loads of great stories in that world I'd love to see explored.

Slightly worried by a lot of the online talk about this (from people who know the source material better than me as I've never read the books) being basically which conventionally attractive woman they get in to play the female leads. The sex/romance aspects of The Witcher 3 are one the few things I don't like about the game, simply because it feels like they were written and storyboarded by a teenage boy in his bedroom. I'd watch it if it was more of the politics etc. from the games interspersed with some plot-driven monster-killing, I'm not into watching a high-budget soft-porn fantasy series about a muscley guy riding around banging every women he meets who isn't a peasant.

I don't see how the writing in The Witcher 3 is relevant to this show. The show isn't based on the games and it's not as if the games are telling the same story as the books. They're a non-canon extension of the books.

You and Sakpowski can feck off with that. They're canon.

Why are they so adamant about it not being about the games. Forgive me for not being a hipster, but it's the games that got The Witcher global fame not the books. Would seem a bit daft then, to not base any of it on the games.

I tried to romance both Triss and Yennefer and ended up with neither, they're not canon until I fix that in another playthrough. :(

It's a great opportunity to introduce people who've only played the games to the original source material, which is far too wonderful to ignore anyway. I only read the books after playing all three games and reading how everything came to be before the start of the first game was truly fascinating. I'm sure all those who'd watch the show will have a similar experience. Unless it sucks of course.

Just making a show about the games wouldn't give you any additional insight into the universe of the Witcher, so I don't see the point of that.

You greedy disloyal bastard. Triss is fair game only until Yen returns.

Books are awesome too and contain much more stories, including the origin ones, how Geralt met Yen and Ciri. The abundance of politics, large-scale battles and characters is also very important for a TV show. Saying that, I hope that after they run out of the books stories, they do a season based on the events of TW3, though they might need a deal with CDPR about it, in addition to pissing the author (who seems a bit of a bitter bellend).

Yeah but at that point I'd played both previous games and never read the books. Especially The Witcher 2 really sells Triss as a genuine love interest for Geralt. Having read the books, it's not even a contest. I just have to find the time for another play through.

Yeah, when it comes to Yen' rivals, in the books it is Fringilla Virgo the only one. In the games, actually in both first two games Triss is Geralt's default romance option, but in the third game it really pushes the player to go for Yen. Read the books after and it was definitely the correct choice.

I wouldn't even say Fringilla, she's basically like a summer love for Geralt. He doesn't trust her anyway. Looking back it's strange that CDPR took so long to introduce Ciri and Yennefer. The first game is a bizarre story with Alvin basically taking Ciri's role, really feels out of place now. I really liked the second though.

I'll have to play the second one - I have only really got into W3 after dabbling with (but not getting into) W1 and I totally skipped the second game.

You have to. While nowhere as good as the third game, it is quite better than the first one, and the story is very good.

As others have said, the games are what made the brand popular enough to adapt into a high budget series, not the books. A big budget production is far more likely to take it's stylistic cues from the hugely successful games as opposed to the book series that most people have only heard of because of the games.

This isn't me trashing the books btw, I've not read them. Just saying that it's the games which will be the yardstick by which the money men will judge this adaptation and the games handle sex and romance in a really juvenile way I'm not personally interested in seeing in a live action series.

edit - to clarify I'm not talking plot here I'm sure that will stem more from the books as for most audiences that will be new ground, I'm talking style/tone.

But the point remains, those who did the writing in the games have nothing to do with this show so why would you be concerned about the quality of the writing in the games? It's not based on the games nor are the same writers involved. I just don't see the connection. Sapkowski handles those themes well in my opinion, so I'm not at all concerned about that.

Non-creative executives won't be pushing for an artistically faithful adaption of the books or how Sapkowski has written them, they're going to use the background provided by the books to create something that sells to an audience who largely won't have read them.

My concern is that the executives will say 'a modern fantasy tv series needs a heavy sex-appeal angle, the games treated sex/romance in a way that seems to be popular and ultimately the reason this IP is valuable is because of the games so we'll go that way with the series.'

Given the way these big budget productions work it's not a ridiculous extrapolation. I'm glad you're not worried about it and I hope you're right, but until I see it I'll have my doubts.

Personally I prefer brunettes (if I have a preferance, I'm not 100% sure). In TW3 I always go with Yennifer because despite her attitude she genuinely cares for Ciri & Geralt.
And despite it being a magical world, how many wouldn't feel betrayed if someone had a long relationship with your friend and said they had forgotten about you for some reason not within their control?

It's just a weird thing to be concerned about. I wouldn't even say The Witcher 3's success is in any way related to the fact Geralt can have sex with several women. The days of The Witcher 1's sex cards are long gone.

It’s very linear and nowhere near the content in terms of side quests etc. but the positive of that is the overarching plot is a lot more focused and doesn’t falter at any stage. Probably the only major flaw in TW3’s main plot is that final arc with the Wild Hunt feeling so rushed and sort of non-existent as a major villain*

    * they compensate for this big time with Gaunter O’Dimm in Hearts of Stone tbf

TW2’s story was good fun. One of the very few games I turned down the difficulty for just so I could enjoy the main quest.

Yeah TW2 was crazy difficult. I remember thinking going into TW3 that if they made it as difficult as TW2 I wasn't going to bother. Turns out they probably made it too easy!
