The reason i wanted Italy to win was because of the Southgate tactics. Criminal to play with these players and tactics while he has fantastic players mostly unused on the bench

I think we managed the game ok Italy are a very good team and whilst they had plenty of the ball created next to nothing

It went to pens and we even saved 2 and still lost, it’s shit but that’s football.

He's just boring and F.A. is also responsible.

So many exciting players and decides to bring Henderson on. He had Italy on the plate for majority of match.

We've got a very limited midfield that can't control a game and a defence that can be got at. Did well to even get that far considering

If nobody can get the ball forward to the attacking players it doesn't matter how good they are. That's why he played like that.

They played well in the first half. The Italians sharpened up and a better manager would have been proactive to change things before conceding. From then on every call he made damaged the team and he had 2 penalty takers who hadn't touched the ball.

Appalling management.
Throwing rashford and sancho into the penalty shootout without either of them touching the ball was a bad call.

Southgate fecked it.

scoring in the 3rd was detrimental in the end. I can’t believe he had us defending like that at the 50th minute, did he think it was the 80th?!

then the subs… what is he thinking?

A good manager makes a change when the team needs help, Mancini did it, Southgate didn’t.

Awful awful.

No team in particular.
Wow the first manager to get England to a major final in 50 plus years and you’re calling for his head you spoilt bastards.

His formation was fine and he changed it, Italy are just a good team.

It went to penalties, two of the best teams on penalties in the final.

At the start of the tournament if someone said to me I’ll give you penalties in the final every single one of us snaps their hand off it’s just a shame the Man Utd boys let us down.

More to come.
I'm not english, but he was too defensive today.

Even Deschamps wanted to win 2016 final, as he tried to attack, and actually he should have won before E.T, Portugal just lucked out with that hit on post at the last minute.

In don't think Gareth should have a new contract, he won't play better than this.

From a Scot who watched my team go toe to toe with this immensely talented England team.

This loss in a Final is the worst case scenario for England. Southgate will be praised , keep his job , and waste the all the potential your attacking talents possess.

In his time on the pitch, Saka was ineffective at RW, then moved to the LW, where he was ineffective, then played the last 20 minutes as a number 10, where he was ineffective, and then missed a penalty.

The poor kid looked like he didn't know what he was supposed to do.

From the 15th minute, he instructed his team to play on the back foot. From the moment Italy scored Southgate set up his team to take them to pens... against an absolute mammoth in goal.

Italy looked terrified at the beginning of the game. England has the best attacking options in the world, and he decided to nullify that at every opportunity. This is all entirely on Southgate. He's got away from it from the off. The quality of the team has mitigated Southgate's negativeness.

He has to go.
I couldn't agree more. England has a golden generation of offensive talent and he plays the team like Middlesbrough.

No Maddison, Mason Mount on the wing, no creative attacking midfielder to service the ball to Kane.

England won't be raising any cup under him.

I said during the first matches that it´s criminal not to utilize this golden generation of attackers… Cowardly tactics and team selection throughout. Written in the stars that this wasn´t going to work out.
He´s shown no support for Rashford and Sancho this tournament and then expects them to win him the trophy at the end, after ruining their self esteem and or any form they might have or get during the euros. People saying they should score can feck off. That pressure from a whole nation is not healthy, after coming on cold last minute. He really is clueless in in-game management. Sets up to defend and relies on luck and individuals to score. Italy were scared in the start and would have conceded again had he attacked instead of defend.

Everyone knows sitting on a 1 goal lead doesn't work - especially against Italy who are quality and clever.

Southgate's negativity bit him in the ass. Grealish has to come on at 60 mins. A ball holder and someone who can create. These were tactics of a championship side that snatched an early lead.

Thing is - England is better than Italy. At some point you have to go for it. But not in the 105 minute.

Yup.

You witnessed it first hand when you fought that draw. A derby, and you guys wanted it more. And yet we had the players...but players he refuses to use. It's all really obvious looking back to that, the Germany and the Denmark games how this would go.

We didn't even go for it then! Rashford was ready to come on, then he waited another 14 fecking minutes! Rashford and Sancho on in the 119th minute, Sterling left on but didn't take a penalty...

Seriously, anyone defending this clown surely can't have watched that game and grasped what actually went on.

As a Welshman, now that you're winning nowt I couldn't be more made up that you got so far - that massive chancer will probably be given another two more tournaments minimum, and you'll never have as much luck with tournament structure and draws ever again.
Yeah, sadly agree. Seems a lovely bloke but from the Mourinho school of over-complicating tactics.

What would Fergie do with this Eng squad ffs

The midfield and the care they took with the ball was what brought Italy back into the game. They were unreal. Running and showing for each other and backing each other to get out of the tighter spots. England is just force force force. They need a tempo setter and to be much braver showing for the ball in the middle.

Appalling management by Southgate. You can’t sit on a one nil lead for 88 minutes against a side like Italy. Taking no risks is not only moronic, but itself risky. He had the tools at his disposal to attack Italy and then defend two nil lead.

Instead, he pissed it all away. I recommend against his knighthood.

With Phillips and Rice in midfield? Seems unlikely. He definitely was slow to react and bringing Sancho and Rashford on so late didn't help them but England's midfield is 2nd rate and just like at the World Cup the moment they played one of the best teams they got outplayed.

Falling on the easier side of the draw has flattered them in both tournaments, they have great attacking options and fine full backs but until they have a more commanding centre back pairing and a midfield that is more capable of keeping the ball against good sides it's going to be a struggle to win something.

Of course it's his fault. Sancho has over 150 goals and assists at the age of 21, and he brought on Saka with 6 goals in his entire career. He has a team dripping with attacking talent, and he played passively the entire tournament. When Italy scored he made two defensive subs, and he literally held off as long as he could to bring on Rashford and Sancho on. It's beyond contestation that he played for pens. If he plays for pens against the best penalty saver in the tournament, and expects 3 kids, 2 of which played scarcely a minute all game to win us the shootout, then that is all on Southgate. I'm sorry but you've got to be clinically blind think this is on the players.
Yes to all of this. Amd I'm not English so you should all accept my opinion as non-biased expert facts.

Err no, Mancini wouldn’t have a Rice-Philips midfield pairing to begin with. England has enough talent to dominate in midfield but Southgate is too much of a coward to play them because his approach is defense first.

Who would play then? England don't have a single midfielder who is anywhere near close to the quality of all 3 that started for Italy today.

Not an issue with the midfield pairing but then allow the front 4 to be explosive attackers. If the back 6 are keeping things tight you can play a strong attacking unit. Instead he played Saka and Mount instead of Sancho and Grealish. Bizarre!!

What I find weird is why do people forget Bellingham? Even the pundits never mention him.

He is good enough to put in great performances against City in the CL, but is considerred not good enough for England against worse teams.

Grealish and Foden can both play in central midfield. Them two ahead of a Rice in a three, with Grealish helping Shaw and Sterling overload the left channel, and Foden helping Walker and Sancho/Saka overload the right, would make for a fine midfield.

Think it was the tifo podcast where someone said Southgate is on with such small margins that if it works he looks like genius(The Germany game)but if it fails then he looks pretty stupid.

As an outsider the late subs seemed insane and letting a kid take the final penalty is just bad man management.
