Thomas Partey | SIGNED for Arsenal

He is a very good player and would be a fantastic pick up for whoever signs him. But there's a few very good ball winning players with good distribution we could potentially sign if Ole decides to go that route.
Assuming Pogba stays, in my opinion, Partey would compliment Bruno & Pogba really well.

Which others players did you have in mind who are equally as good as Partey or better than him? And they would be able to partner up well with Pogba and Bruno?

Overrated.

The Fred we saw over the last few months is the better player.
Fred is pretty much the perfect recycle player. Gets the ball forward to a better creator (Fernandes) but there are differences between him and Partey.

Away at City we hardly see much of the ball imo and Partey would not be a problem, more of a big advantage. However in matches where we dominate I can understand the importance of having a better footballer there. On the other hand Parthey would bring a defensive stability that we lack when Fred plays there, he is very easily bypassed and we are vulnerable.
Our defence is actually very good though? Especially in the big games?
I really don't think he and Fred is worth the trade off

We have been quite good in the big games this year but we still managed to get embarrassed by Arsenal and Liverpool, great victories against City and Chelsea though, however I am not convinced by our defensive stability to be fair. Too many times we have roaming runners directly at out defense and I think we should address that.

That second part I don't really understand? Do you mean what Partey brings it's not really worth in order to replace Fred with him? I that's your point I disagree, not like Fred brings much in attack either, never mind his questionable defensive game.

Different players but i prefer VDB. I like cultured players in our team. I read Partey is a very poor user of the ball. Not sure if he will be good enough for the football Ole wants looking at the type of players he’s now targeting. Matic is a DM but he’s got fantastic ability with the ball

Those calling him a CDM are wide of the mark - he's fantastic at taking the from his half and carrying a team from a defensive position into attacking ones. I feel those sort of players really thrive in the Premier League. His passing on the ball isn't particularly elaborate but technically he's sound and composed when players press him - I think he actually enjoys when players try to press him as he's very good at shielding the ball and then dribbling away. Great presence and physical attributes too . He'd start for all the top six IMO.

Grealish is not a RW option. His only time at RW came for Notts County 6 years ago with 7 appearances. Not sure that’s enough evidence of proficiency.

He does however offer depth for LW/LAM.

I understand the desire for Partey more because he could occupy a starting XI spot whereas even if Pogba left I don’t see how Grealish fits into the starting XI nicely.

For me, Grealish is more of an option for our RW than say: Periera/Lingard/Mata

Grealish does offer better cover/depth at LW/LAM your right, but he's simply better than any of the three above.

Currently with 2 CM spots up for grabs between: Pogba/McTom/Fred/Matic - I would say Partey would be behind all but Matic.

There's less need for Partey if Pogba stays.

Grealish makes our squad better, i'm not sure Partey does

Partey is a #8 and we already have three of those in Fred, McTominay and Pogba.

We need a #6 to replace Matic, long-term.

We play a pivot with two 8s

Be prepared to bang your head against this wall for a while yet. Ole isn’t going to buy a destroyer type and people would do well to realise this. Even Matic, who is often described as your typical #6, is excellent on the ball (at his best). Ole wants midfielders that can play; that’s for certain.

It's been reported by the likes of James Ducker that United are looking for a player that can play both the #6 and #8 roles. Which I personally agree with.

It doesn't seem like we're looking at a pure DM but rather a DM who can also contribute going forward.

That certainly sounds more like Van Der Beek than Grealish if that is the case

it makes sense especially for when teams come to Old Trafford and sit in and we need to get the ball forward as fast as possible to exploit any spaces given. Players who can produce the unexpected. Finding the quick ball over the top, out to the flanks or into the 9 while our more attacking midfielders take up advanced positions. A pure destroyer just isn’t needed in a lot of our home matches.

I dread the thought of seeing a player like Ndidi playing for us for the exact reasons you've given and I completely agree.

we are so close to being the finished article now, it’s an exciting time to be a utd supporter! We already have a lot of tools to break down teams. Bruno can find the tricky final ball through the eye of a needle or a quick flick around the corner. Pogba can drive it forward or land a ball wherever he wants, he’s also solid in the air if Bruno can find him. We just need that little bit more quality and guile to push the first 11 as hard as possible and keep everyone fresh and on their toes. I would like someone to come in and organically phase matic out by the end of next season. Camavinga looks potentially top class but I don’t think we’ve a notion of getting him. How’s your boy Zakaria been doing since the restart? Are you still as keen on him?

We play a pivot with two 8s

That's called a 'double-pivot'. We didn't have a whole lot of choice, given that there's only one #6 at the club.

For much of last season, our midfield was function over form. It will have a very different look about it next season, though, with two top class creative players in Pogba and Bruno, coming into the side together for the first time. To support them and give them the freedom to properly hurt the opposition, we need a positionally-disciplined player alongside them.

There seems to be a pervasive misconception, that to be a #6, a player must exclusively be a destroyer - essentially, a limited clogger, there to win the ball back, but not much else. That isn't the case. Look at how Carrick played the role - he was a superb reader of the game and his primary defensive attribute was his clever positioning, cutting off passing lanes for the opposition. He was an accomplished passer and could set the tempo for the entire game, from deep in midfield. Few would argue that he was there to 'destroy'. In my view, we should be targeting a similar player this summer.

Thing is though, whenever Leicester are doing well Ndidi is often a big part of it. And no one can argue that LCFC have played some wonderful attacking football this season, many here even wanted to poach their coach. Personally I love the idea of finally having a stable midfield, we've not had that since prime Keane.

Zakaria is still out due to injury and I'm still hopeful we might make a move for him because he fits the profile of the player Ole is looking for according to reports. He can also slot in at CB and I believe he'd be our best CB after Maguire.

Camavinga would be the most exciting signing we could make potentially for the role in question. But like yourself I'm not as confident of us actually signing him. Real Madrid seem like the front runners in that chase.

Carrick was a player that could play both the #8 and the #6 role and started of as a #8 coming through the ranks at West Ham.

Carrick is actually a example of the type of player Ole is reportedly after.

Except we've hardly been linked to any 6 at all. I think we are developing Mctominay for that role

Yes he was a box-box player earlier in his career, but the Carrick we need is the one we saw at United. I don't think Thomas Partey is that player. Somebody like Marc Roca, is more the kind of profile.

I'm not saying a destroyer type couldn't work. I'm saying I prefer someone that can also contribute to the build up to a very good level.

Grealish makes our squad better, i'm not sure Partey does

They both would, quite a bit:

Martial----------Rashford (Greenwood)
---------Grealish------------- (James but he'd play wide and we'd switch formations)
--Pogba-----------Bruno---- (Fred)
----------Partey----------------- (McTominay)

that's still only 10 guys for 6 spots and then Matic and Ighalo to cover the rest of the minutes, maybe Mata cameos?

We need 4-5 (CB and a LWB badly as well) very good players more than perfect fits. Bruno and Rashford are fairly versatile and we can tinker a bit formation wise, but you can't bend on quality. And Partey is a top 3 DM in Europe to my eye and Grealish would be great as a 10 for us and the first game-changing bench option or Pogba/Bruno #2 creative source when one is out option we badly, badly need.

That's why you should watch players before having an opinion on them. Thomas is very good on the ball and can pass the ball both short and long.

Easily a better player than VDB even though they are different types of players.

He isn't a destroyer. Last season Rodri played the defensive parts of the double pivot and previously Gabi played this part. He is a fairly rounded CM, who played everywhere in midfield. This season he played mostly as DM and took another step forward in his development. He isn't the messiah, but a good player, who can still find another gear. Simeone uses midfielders in unusual ways, but he only uses those as DM, that he really trusts.

Our recruitment is looking much better, if he's being able to go to Arsenal with not much fuss from other clubs, I think it's fair to say he's not the the saviour that many of his over the top fans make him out to be. He's a good player from what I've seen though, I just think people are a bit over the top.

Yeah from the little I’ve seen I’d agree, looks decent but not the world beater some would say he is.

Still would be surprised for him to sign for Arsenal. If we are letting them have a free run at him perhaps we know another player is likely to sign for us in the same/similar position?

Can we all drop the specialist DM posts, we don't play with one as a lot have pointed out now.

We play with two fluid pivots all this talk of destroyers or number 6s is getting tiresome, before you jump on and speak of recruitment learn the system first.

Van de Beek, Saul and Mctominay are the type of players that fit our deep pivot roles. I expect us to recruit one more as Matic and Perieira arnt really compatible there.

I think wel eventually sign backup for Fernandes too instead of using Lingaard, I'd like to see Gomes progress and become his backup

Partey isn't a specialist DM though infact some would argue he isn't a DM at all. He's also played in a pivot with Saul. We already have a Saul in Pogba what we need is the defensive qualities of Partey

You've probably mistaken my post for me saying Partey falls into the DM role , he doesn't I agree he's quite fluid, my point isn't about the player I particular it's about people pointing towards we need a DM and probably not realising Partey isn't a DM , if that makes sense.

Check Sauls defensive stats out compared to Parteys, you may be suprised both contribute to attack and defence a lot more than people think making both ideal signings

It's why I'm surprised we aren't linked to him. He's perfect for the pivot role with Pogba

Somebody mentioned Ole or the scouting team must of seen something or maybe we just can't factor him into this summers budget. May think Pogba, Fred, Mctominay and Matic are adequate for now, and if Pogba has decidided to stay maybe another midfield pivots been put on the back burner. Just my take on it, as obv I'd love us to sign one of Saul, Van de Beek or Partey.

Something tells me all eggs are in the Sancho basket, then the transfer window after we may be busier in terms of numbers signed.

Saul would be an absolute worldie signing but nothing suggests there is a hope in hell of him ever leaving Atletico particularly as he is on a ridiculously long contract too

Is Saul a defensive midfielder too?

Not a natural DM like an Ndidi I will grant you that but can play in that area of the pitch but in a different style to him, doesn't matter anyway because don't see Atletico ever letting him leave.

He has a close in his contract, he can leave for 55m. I would take him with a heartbeat. He is class, him behind Pogba and Bruno, Waw.

I think the poster is talikng about Saul. And yourself might be referring to Partey?
