I doubt it, and im not sure i want it to happen. Would be great if we we had all the money in the world, but we dont. To spend 25 million, maybe even more on a striker, who isnt the best finisher, to replace the best finisher in the world, is a bit of a risk. Especially with a midfield like ours.Mainoldo said:Stop being so Negative man, why wouldn't he come. He's already stated that he would love to go to England and Milan isn't the most attractive move at the minute, but we will wait and see

In the last 3 years, we've spent a crazy sum on Rooney, 7 million on Smith and what was it over 10(?) on Saha. Its a lot. It just seems like bad business to spend another 25 million on Torres and that too now.

Listen we have a rubbish midfield. Absolutely rubbish. Upfront we're still alright. Remember we werent missing Ruud much for half of last season because Saha was excellent. If we spend 25 million on Torres, and lets not kid ourselves, we dont bargain well and he is pure quality, so it shouldnt be any less. How much do you think our 'tranfer budget' is?? Getting a quality midfielder isnt going to cost less than 15 million either. And if we are to get those two midfielders we need, AND Torres, we would have to spend around 50 million plus. I'm sorry i cant see that happening for a club so in debt.Mainoldo said:Torres has never been cheap and his that price for a reason. We are not Arsenal finding gems for relatively low prices. We spend big always have done on good player sometimes exceptional players. It's been this way for 10+ years and wont change!!

He was excellent last season. Was scoring for fun until the differences with Fergie or our favourate diver. Even came off the bench to score a few later on. His dip in form is overhyped. Holland were crap in the Wc, not that Ruud played exceptionally well, but they barely created anything. Scholes lost form, Giggs has lost form plenty of times, suddenly with Ruud it means he's FINISHED!!savais said:I really don't understand the Ruud fans that still insist that he IS the best finisher in the world. Last season he was a shadow of himself (most of the season before as well). Then, they blamed Fergie for dropping Ruud, well how do they explain that Van Basten did the very same thing? Yes, Ruud WAS a world class finisher, the best in the business, but nobody can claim that he still holds that title.
Red17 said:So you're basically saying it is not worthwhile to spend money on a replacement for Ruud unless he is as proven as a prolific striker as Ruud is, since we have already spent loads of money on striker in the past. So basically, you're narrowing the field to just Henry, Bent (but that's just 1 season - who knows if he can repeat it), Eto'o (but that's in La Liga), Forlan (but that's in La Liga and he had failed earlier in the Premiership), Sheva, Toni (but that's in a rigged Serie A).....so just Henry & Sheva then.
And therefore, from your line of argument, it also stand to reason that "who cares about adequate cover & future planning when we've already spent too much money in the striking dept".
And conclusion is basically - you do not think Torres is worth the trouble and not so much because you have insider information that he does not fancy United - which is contrary to most reported accounts in the media.

I didnt say its wrong to sell him. I said its not appropriate to claim he's finished.Red17 said:On the pitch, his body language was all wrong. His movement was all wrong. (Even professional pundits have commented on this - so it's not just to the untrained eye) He didn't take too well to being substituted and did not respond in a professional manner. Who knows what else happened off the playing pitch. What do you think is going to change this season - so that he regains his form of 2-3 seasons ago.
Wonderful to see you lot so wound over me saying Torres might not be the best idea. Spastics.pepsi07 said:feck off...![]()
Vieira 8 mill.
Gatusso 8-10 mill.
Torres max 25 mill.
...........................
max . total 43 mill.
Ruud 12-15 mill.
Obi Mikel 12 mill.
transfer budget at least 20 mill.
amolbhatia100 said:I'm saying we dont have a bloody midfield. We need a few midfielders, that will cost us 25 million around, and if we do sign Torres, thats 50. Cant see that happening. IMO it makes more sense to sort the midfield out first, if you can do that within a certain budget, and still have the funds to get Torres then excellent. But i really dont want us comphensating the quality of signings in the midfield to get pin up boy Torres.
About the spending on strikers, i said that in relation to the amount he would cost and the timing.
You guys really do take all of this seriously dont you. I dont spend hours reading quotes and rubbish articles all day. So i really wouldnt know. I'm just doubting him coming here, lets see though.Red17 said:You said you doubted if he wanted to come to United, preferrin Milan. But it was pointed out that he's gone on record that he prefers the Premiership to Serie A. So you doubts were really borned of the fact that you do not rate and want him at United rather than any substantive fact.

Cal? said:He has to get no. 9, guess that might be the sticking point.
He even has the number tattooed on his arm.
Maybe. It would be great to see all of this happening, the 10 from Mikel and 15 from Ruud going straight back into transfers. Giving us an additional 25 to spend on just a striker, that being Torres. And the normal budget used to improve the midfield.WesBrownIsaGod said:i'm talking logic. we need three class strikers, we have only got two. your issue is money, but the glazers'll come up with the funds, they have to or we'll struggle - they know that. hopefully ferguson will drop some more dead weight out of the squad aswell.
eg silvestre
Lots of people claim he's finished as a striker. One in this very thread thinks he's on the same level as Sheringham today. I said he's probably the best finisher around, and thats probably still true. I didnt say its wrong to sell him, so stop picking on little things and making it an issue.Red17 said:Nonody claimed he is finished as a striker but the common consensus was that he did not seemed to care anymore and/or seem to enjoy playing for United - if it meant bench time. And most would agree that Saha seemed to offer more of an attacking threat to the team as a whole.
We're "wound up" - if that's even appropriate because you offered information as facts when the contrary is true (that he prefers PL to Serie A) - so who's the WUM?
Ky7 said:Didnt the Glazers say if a "Rooney" becomes available they will make funds available, would Torres not come in this category?

Red17 said:Just 1 - against Bolton, after Saha started to feature regularly in his place, which was after the Liverpool FA Cup lost. During this period - he scored only 1 other time, against West Ham, where he featured for the full 90 mins.
Taking the Liverpool FA Cup game as the critical event, when he became "disillusioned/disinterested" when Saha featured more regularly in his spot, his stats are these:-
Up till the Liverpool FA Cup game: 138 minutes per goal
Subsequently: 218 minutes per goal (almost a full game extra).
So we now have both stats and naked eye observation to back up what some of us has claimed about his form.
By the way - when I write this - I do not mean to trivialise Ruud (I have the utmost respect for his striking abilities and what he's achieved for United) but just to set the facts/records straight.
he scored twice, you muppet.Mainoldo said:Blackburn!! even though he was rested for that game
