People just like moaning, they would rather we signed trash just so that we could say we had new players.

We can’t compete for the top players at the moment either way, and the manager has said that he wants the right players for the positions he needs to fill (so that maybe in 3 years time we don’t have to moan about those players going out on loan and no one wanting to buy them!).

We definitely need more players, and better players, but let’s save our moaning for the end of the window shall we and just try and get through next few weeks without a meltdown
This is my current position. Waiting until the end of the window and hoping the youth players who are promoted do shine and fill any gaps well.

I'm 100% on board with ETHs view. The right players or don't bother, develop our own. We have some good youth coming through and I reckon ETH will be able to coach our current players better than Ole or Ralf .

Murtough and Arnold are not new people , they were very much involved in the previous failures.

It's hard to have much faith in them when they don't have any history of success and aren't doing a particularly good job. Neither would get a job at another Premier league club. Honestly describing Arnold as new when he has been at the club for a number of years and is only in the job because he is mates with Woodward is a real stretch
They were not involved at all in first team football. Arnold had nothing to do with football until late last year.

Murtough was dealing with the women's team and youth teams until middle of last year.

Their involvement level was negligible.

No. No they were not

Who bettered our window 12 months ago? We’ve spent a fortune on the wrong players, fans want that to continue, the new boss doesn’t.

The antidote is buying the right players. Buying no one is definitely not the solution.

Cause we don't have CL we can't buy the top players and because we don't have top players we can't get into CL. Catch-22.

I can accept the fact that yeah maybe in midfield ETH and the board feels like its either FDJ or bust but what about RW, ST and RB?
You're telling me Utd can't find the right player for any position? Utter bollocks.

It certainly is if there isn’t anyone available

Or, fans want good players in critical positions of need to be signed. De Jong is not the only midfielder on planet earth that would improve United. The club is not in a position to be picky with players.

When did we buy no one? We signed 3 very good players in key areas. Feckin state of some of you lot, panic merchants simply buying into the hype. We have 2 strikers for 1 place, we have Sancho on right wing, Dalot seems to have established himself under Ten Hag. Try going with facts before calling said facts utter bollocks.

I’m not a United fan, but this is just click bait crap. Even if you had signed no one your squad is significantly better than most others.

EtH’s biggest job is not signing new people, that’s a distraction, it’s about working with the squad you have, which should be fairly easy to improve given that they’ve not been developed properly for a few years.

You apparently “won” the transfer window last year with Sancho, Varane and Ronaldo and look how that worked out.

Articles like this are designed to distract and worry you!

This guy gets it.

Excellent post!

Reduce the offer by €5m a day until they run out of time to register players, they've been in the driving seat until now because we needed him before the season started - that deadline is over for us now.

How can this be completely true? How can La Liga deny something when players signed new contracts?
Also can't Barca just not register FDJ for example and register kessie instead?
I know they will still owe him money but surely drives him away as he would definitely not play

Remind me never to take a pay day loan from you my friend…I like that tactic!

That would be the lowest of low but something tells me they are capable of that.
I think we should brief we are no longer interested (but secretly let Frenkie know that we are) and watch Barca squirm for the last week before their season starts.
Part of me also wants to see him stay just to see the shit show that is Barca burn.

I think it’s because FDJ isn’t a new contract so not registering him wouldn’t matter, Barca can still be punished for being over budget but still paying FDJ as he sits at home wouldn’t help.

Only for them to reject the lower offer. Makes sense.

They have something like “salary cap” in Spain. Barca with new players/renewals are above it, hence cannot register them. They need more income i.e. from player sales (hi Frankie) to be below it. Not registering Frankie will not help.

That's a risk United should take right now, Barca have dragged this on, not United.

The reason United agreed an €85m transfer was to get this done and dusted quickly, that's obviously not happened so United can and should risk being cheeky, Barca currently have more to lose (if the reports are true) and their deadline is a lot more concerning than ours (it's the start of the season, the benefit would have been to sign him early, no more deadline for us).

It also depends on FDJ, if he and his agent have it all set up with United and don't want to go elsewhere then Uniteds risk will be even lower.

Oh yeah the backup CB, LB and the 30 year old past his peak midfielder would fire us into the CL. Brilliant.

More deluded than Ty from Arsefam TV.

Quoted and bookmarked for end of season just in case the opposite happens.

Martinez is no way a back up by the way

I am sorry, but this is a very sweet development. Barca are just a mess and watching them splurge cash on new signings when they have so many debts and basically discarded players, but still their players, still on high salary...

and now this...

Hi! Been a lurker for many years and also a regular listener to the pod but decided to jump in.

What exactly is going on at Chelsea if they've already spent 185m, are going big for Fofana so likely willing to spend between 60-80m on another CB and then also want De Jong for I assume a minimum of 70m. Are they really going to spend over 300m this summer?

Seems pretty wild. I guess they could recoup 30m from Broja, but that leaves them pretty light up top.

As our main competition for De Jong my main hope is they overspend and can't afford him and we're his only option. Not very classy admittedly, but think we're beyond that at this point.

If you'll take points from us on Sunday, you'll have a double laugh.

You're really good at this, man.

I’m pretty sure we just sacked our two head scouts, not the entire network.
We also restructured the way we analyze the data an players that those scouts feed. While we didn't fire 100% of the scouts, we did a lot of adjustments which need time before they kick in.

How does selling one player allow then to do all that though?
I’m no expert, but if FDJ has €400k/week, thats €20.8mill, add on a €85mill transfer feel, that frees up about €2mill/week wages. Guess that will be different if transfer fee is set to be paid over several years, but you get the idea. Also, FDJ’s wages will probably be enough alone to cover 2-3 of the new guys.

Not convinced awb or maguire were signings recommended by scouts, seem to fit squarely with oles best of British policy from that year.

By all accounts the scouts had been somewhat alienated in recent years. Replacing them is fine, sacking to without replacement seems a bit silly. Pretty skeptical it was just a pr move to show that it's an new era without any real substantive improvement
Everyone who keeps towing the PR narrative just needs to be labeled a conspiracy theorist at this point. Seriously, everything is fecking PR. It's like I'm on a conspiracy forum where everything is a conspiracy.

It's a shame our PR mastermind Lord Woodwards never thought about firing anyone from the existing layout. Hmm, I wonder why?

They can book the whole transfer fee even if it’s spread out in terms of payments.
