Surely he’s got to be in with a shout for the World Cup squad? With so many injuries, we aren’t blessed with many options.

He’s been one of Chelsea’s best players this season. Used to playing in a back 3.

I was writing out who I would name to the Lions squad and he would easily be in it for me. Added benefit that he is comfortable in a back 3 and 4, has loads of experience playing with the younger stars of the team and is n fantastic form.

IF England does go with a back 3 …I was a little surprised I didn’t see more Ben White mentions either to be fair.

If Southgate going to trudge out Dier and a lot of the odd rubbish … then, that would be a shame.

I would consider starting with a back 3, but Rice playing as the middle CB, letting him roam up to give heavier midfield numbers when needed. On current form with a back 3 you could do a lot worse than White and Chalobah either side: a physical but athletic group that also has some on ball talent.

Still not lost a game he's started yet (outside of penalty shootouts).

White, Guehi, Tomori, Coady, Burn, Dunk, Webster, and Tarkowski.

Yes you’ve just confirmed my point. Having people available to select from is different to having people of the calibre required. Of course we have 1000’s of options in that sense.

I do agree with the likes of White, Tomori and even Burn who’s been brilliant this season.

I would be inclined to go with a Stones, White and Walker. It’ll never happen though. Maguire is cemented in that team.

He seems to have made a big leap this season, which has been fantastic to see. It's the best part about promoting academy players, you see the progression and development in real time.

He warrants consideration in my opinion. He may have left it too late to start knocking on the door, but he's in the form of his life right now and I would personally take him over a number of defenders I know Southgate will include in the squad.

If I was an English fan I'd want him and Tomori both going to the World Cup. I don't hate Maguire as much as some others on here but I see no reason he should be in there ahead of either right now.

Maguire will go because he’s one of the leaders of the team I guess but you’re right, he shouldn’t be in the squad.

It's interesting that Chalobah has had 108 matches on loan, before actually getting into Chelsea's squad, and holding down a regular spot.
Some posters on here have already decided that certain young players, that United have out on loan, are not good enough for the first team after less than 20 games with their foster clubs.
Even Tuanzebe has only played 40 matches on loan, Garner had 81, Ethan Laird is currently on 62.
On Chalobah getting into the England squad, I can't really see it, Southgate will almost certainly go with his tried and trusted CB's, and even if he, along with other English CB's, are performing very well for their respective clubs.

It's a fault of Southgate's just like how Bellingham and Rice should have being playing much more games together well before the World Cup. I like Philips but the whole point of Rice is that he'll give you very little in attack but him playing means someone like Bellingham has so much freedom. Now Philips is injured and you have a midfield that should be in its mature phase but hasn't had enough time together. Same as how he ignored Sancho at Dortmund, just too slow to make the right calls and pick players on form.

Disagree, major tournaments like that should be about experience, of which he has none.

Should definitely be in the squad, however not starting.

Only because he’s one of the leaders of group, and I get it from that perspective but on merit I don’t think he deserves to be on the plane.

Yeah, the key point for young players is consistently playing football. Whether on loan or at the parent club. The Tuanzebe example is pretty staggering considering he’s going to be 25 in a month. Injuries play a part, but a player like Axel basically spent a season or two as a “first squad player” — too good for the U23s but not good enough to get consistent game time for the club. So he sort of just sat there in limbo only doing training

Experience of what? Losing?

Maguire (in horrific form) has runners up medals
Dier has runners up medals

Tomori WC (U20) and Serie A winner
Chalobah Euro (U19), World club, FA cup and Super cup medal

Stones and Walker (if he makes it) have various winners medals and are more than enough experience.

We can list various other examples of players not only being in better form but actually having a history and experience of being part of a winning squads. In any case, age is irrelevant, experience is irrelevant. Anyone could potentially be overwhelmed by grand occasions.

Don't watch Chelsea consistently but even the performances I saw of him under Tuchel he always looked relatively solid. Not outstanding but doing his job.

I think he was solid at times, but also kind of error prone sometimes. He's taken a pretty sizeable leap this season.

In fairness, the only decisions that Southgate was actually vindicated in taking at the last Euros was sticking with Sterling (who was possibly England's player of the tournament) and preferring Saka (who was also excellent) over the likes of Rashford and Sancho.

But I do agree that his loyalty to his CB's in particular are going to cost him. Which is strange because you'd think a former England international CB should be able to see that the likes of Tomori and Smalling offer more than Maguire and Coady.

I kind of just want him to retire. Nothing against him, I actually think he's quite good, seems fairly likeable, but I can't see him or hear his name without thinking about Tuchel last year, after a game against Liverpool, where he walked into the changing room and was horrified when he saw the medical staff was working on Chalobah's torn open ballsack. It gives me nightmares, it want it to stop.

I always rated Tuanzebe, and his first loan to Villa was immense, in fact two Villa season ticket holders I know actually rated him higher than Mings at that time, and would have gladly signed him permanently, in hindsight, staying with Villa in the PL probably would have been the right thing to do at that time, unfortunately he hardly got any playing time at United, and has badly stagnated.
If he gets fit (not sure what his issue is, possibly health rather than an injury), he may possibly get a loan for the second half of the season.

Apologies, pretty much off track with this statement, but Chalobah shows that several decent loans can help with a players development immensely.

didn’t help that he chose/club chose a bad loan option to Napoli where he was about 6th choice CB. Bizarre move

Somehow I have feeling that Maguire will surprise many people during World Cup and win his place back in United

I’m not sure he’ll surprise anyone, but I’m convinced he’ll play as we Southgate sticks to the same players each time.

Happy for them both. I think they both deserve it but I don't think RLC has done enough to be included while I think Chalobah has but likely won't be included because Southgate will continue to show loyalty players that have done well for him in the past.

He's one of those English homegrown players where you can see after a few games that he's not good enough yet still gets chance after chance while if he was a foreigner he'd be already shipped out. Also just signed a new contract till 2028
