Fair play to him managing to play through the pain at the end but he's been a shite signing.

He’s a good player. We need to find the right partner for him so that we can move him to his preferred side on the right.

I don't see how he was our man of the match. His level isn't exactly impressive but what we saw today was him taking a bigger part in the team performance, he was a team player and moved with the team, he wasn't this weak-link player playing on his own. That is a good sign of his mentality, and who knows how far he can go. I don't have high hopes tbf, but good job.

I can't believe what I'm reading here. It seems many are turning a blind eye to a not-very-good performance because of those last fews minutes. Had some good moments, but his overall performance isn't something I'd describe as good.

Still a mile away from what a top club should have playing at the back.
Watching Tottenham - Chelsea and tbh I think a blind Lindelof without any groins at all would be better than the whole Chelsea defence today.

He’s getting better but still not impressed. Cant believe someone that’s so bad at jumping and heading the ball can play centreback in premier league. He needs to improve that part of his game.

Thought I'd take a look expecting loads of positive remarks given he has been probably been consistently one of our best performers of late and still negativity. I'm out....

Thought he was a little unlucky with the offside goal. Pogba was marking the guy all the way and just dropped off him - didn't leave Victor much time to pick him up.

He was the only player (apart from Rashford when he came on) that seemed to realise he was playing for Manchester United, he hadn't a perfect game but he gave 100% and defended well for the most part. The rest of them looked a bunch of grannies who were out for their Christmas shop

Let me direct you towards John Stones. Still, they're both young for centre backs and improving so who am I to criticise. I loved it when Lindelof fought off those 2 guys at the end. He's good to watch when he's being assertive.

Same, I came in here to say he's been our best and most consistent performer over the last couple of months. Finally growing into his own and all you get in here are people looking for the weaknesses in his game. Says a lot about this forum at the moment to be honest, people aren't interested in anything that might be remotely positive.

I agree

You know that is not good enough for us either btw

It is sad when 2 tackles from our young exciting forward at right back position and a couple of tackles from an injured player clutching his groin are highlights of a game at home to palac
But those 2 actions showed more guts than some of the other shit out there today at least

I did vote for him as the MoM in the heat of the moment after his heroics at the end, but thinking back he didn't really deserve it. He was decent and would have been in our top three, but there were a few times he got quite lucky that Palace didn't punish us.

Loved his attitude at the end though.

1. He headed the ball onto a player towards his own goal.

Yeah, offsides exist for a reason. If the player wasn't offside they don't get ahead of him and force him to head in the direction of his own goal.

Really good performance from him, starting to gain confidence. A shame his groin looked to go near the end.

His tracking back at the end despite the groin injury got the biggest cheer of the day from our fans!
Credit to him least he looked like he gave a feck.

He may not be our best player but he was not garbage. Any defender is going to make mistakes without any covering midfield. Matic has been horrible. You may get the best central defender in the world but with Matic in front of him he is going to make mistakes.
Matic doesn’t remote control his headers does he

He should be moved into midfield instead of Matic.
This makes a lot of sense. But we really haven''t seen his incisive passing. He's taken a lot of time, to get his positioning right at LCB, now moving him to the base of midfield would again mean, him re-organizing himself. I don't think that would be feasible mid-season.

I've long thought he would be good in the Matic position. Would give it a go myself once we've reached 40 points and safe from relegation:D. We can spend the rest of the season 'experimenting':) (with a different coach of course!).

I dont think he would be any better as a DM than CB. His issues other than in the air are similar to Matic. Could he be very slightly better than him? Sure. But neither are what we would need in the position medium to long term. It would be like going from a 4/10 DM to a 5/10 DM and thats if he did well which is no guarantee.

He's not particularly good at reading the play defensively and sensing danger, not particularly aggressive in his challenge to break up play when needed even if it means fouling someone breaking away. And while he's comfortable on the ball for a CB, he'd look very average in midfield next to midfielders.

If we wanted a younger player who can do some stuff at DM but doesn't sense danger well enough yet, then we have Andreas. At least he's a good passer and dribbler and in his few matches he was one of our best players at winning the ball this season.

Already did in the match thread. But since you dont seem to have seen the match :

This was when he headed the ball into the Palace player goalside of him and it ended in our net. There was a Palace player offside thankfully.

He also got tight to a Palace player and the ball was flicked on, taking him completely out of things in one move.

And then when he and Matic let Townsend run through them like they didnt exist :

So there you go. Those were his main mistakes today. He also made some good contributions at other times.

If you're going to miss the next match let me know and I can think about writing a match report for you ahead of time.
Knew someone would blame him for these.

He was always second favourite for the header. He was coming across to challenge a player that wasn’t even his. Just a rudimentary check of the replay will see Pogba lose the player he was meant to be marking entirely.

And the Townsend one, really? That’s all on Matic, mate. You allow a player with his pace to get up to speed against any defender and he’ll be hard to stop. Matic had several opportunities to stop him and he didn’t, with his final attempt at a tackle pushing the ball away from Lindelof and essentially fecking him over.

He was second favourite for the header because he's not good in the air. He headed the ball towards his own goal. Not out for a corner, towards his own goal and it came off a Palace player and into the net.

And yes when Townsend ran through Matic and Lindelof, Lindelof lost his bearings completely. He should be ready to pick up the loose ball pinching it away because although Matic was doing poorly, Townsend was under pressure meaning he was less likely to perfectly keep his balance and control of the ball. It ended up bouncing around and the fact Lindelof didnt have a clue what planet he was on allowed Townsend to get on the end of it.

He’s looked decent for a few weeks now but it’s really hard to judge him when our whole team (especially defensively) is a shambles

He’ll have earned a lot of trust from the fans playing on like he did yesterday too.

And because the Palace player started from offside it meant he was always going to stay goalside and force the defender, whoever it would have been, to head back towards his own goal. Some posters will try to blame him for anything and everything, though.

The Townsend one was just funny. How many times does Matic want to try and tackle him. Lindelof was rightly sitting off them both, you dont charge in and risk taking your own player out, but he probably needs to be more assertive from now on and realise Matic is just going to let any player run at him.

So you're not even acknowledging that it wasn't his man. You've just chosen to ignore that part of my response entirely. Of course. That literally makes no sense. He was goal side of the palace player, yet you say he headed it towards our goal and it came off Kouyate? Kouyate would either have to have been beyond Lindelof at the time of the header for this to happen, which clearly or wasn't, or Lindelof didn't header it directly towards our own net.

Ready to pick up the lose ball? Just watch it. Matics tame tackle changed the angle entirely, there was simply no time to adjust. If Matic hadn't made the 'tackle' then Lindelof was well placed to challenge. He can't predict the future.

Yup. Lindelof was actually in a perfect position to challenge Townsend. Lindelof was side on with Townsend going away from goal. If Townsend tried to have come inside, to his right, then he's heading straight into Fellaini. Matics third failed attempt at a challenge pushed the ball to the side, where Townsend sweeps a leg at it, leaving Lindelof stranded. Either we expect Lindelof to predict the future, or we ask him to be position himself poorly on the off chance a freak rebound opens a new avenue for the ball to pass through. Or perhaps, more simply, we ask Matic to do his job.

He was our man of the match yesterday IMO (which against Palace is a sorry state of affairs). He's not perfect but he's improved a lot for playing consistently and the determination to play on and deal with that situation at the end was great, despite the obvious injury. Sadly, that means he might be out now but I'm convinced there is a player there who can be successful here in the long term.

We need a dominant CB to pair with him (I don't mind Smalling but we need an upgrade) and we sorely need an upgrade at DM to offer better protection. God knows why Matic is untouchable.

Wrong, he jumps from behind him, with the ability to face up the ball and head it back exactly where he was facing and where it came from

The reason he fails to do that is because of the physical contact from the attacker being far more powerful than Lindelof is, and Lindelof mistiming the jump or losing control because his head goes down and instead of using his forehead to head the ball straight, it comes off the right side of his head towards the goal and towards the palace player

Straight on with the jump like you'd want to head the ball away from goal

How he ends up actually delivering the header a split of a second later

He did charge in though thats the point. He isnt sitting off waiting for the opportune time to go in, he does go in at the wrong time allowing Townsend to walk straight past him like he was never there.

Theres no need for him to rush in at that point, he's the last defender with 8 or so yards before his box. He gets attracted to the ball and Townsend flicks it past him with Lindelof's body positioning giving him no chance whatsoever to get back and recover. Luckily Smalling puts a little bit of pressure on Townsend and Townsend has an awful shot with his right foot - He obviously should have scored regardless.

Thats where Lindelof stops backing off and gets attracted to the ball and moves forward to try and win it, allowing Townsend to breeze past him.

And thats the place Townsend is able to get to, with the ball under his control, because Lindelof committed so far out and didnt even slow Townsend down with some physical contact or put him off in any way.

So yes he could have stayed a few yards behind waiting for Townsend to make a mistake and looking to pinch the ball. He could also have looked to block him off. Instead he committed with poor timing and didnt effect play allowing Townsend to get in on goal.

Matic did poorly, his tackles were too weak in his attempt to stay with him but he did at least have him under pressure. Lindelof took himself out of the way relieving the pressure he could have put on Townsend too.

Him and Darmian, surely?!

Problem for me is our defence looked so shaky and disorganised... We really didn't cope well with the Palace attack, especially in the first half. Damian was the better of the two, but was really poor going forward.

I thought Smalling was a bit more composed then Lindelof, but still wasn't MOTM worthy either. Lingard was probably having the best game for me, he was actually causing then problems and was working really hard for the team.

It really doesnt require all that effort to create those stills. You say it yourself. Lindelof jumps from behind him. Townsend (i think) is also slightly ahead of him, because he was coming from offside. He is backing into the Lindelof and pushing him away from goal and the flight of the ball. He's only able to do all that because he started from offside. It didn't count because it was offside, it was nobody's fault. The whole situation came about because of a piece of foul play.

As for the second chance, at the point of crossing in to the penalty box is the point at which Lindelof has to make a challenge. He does but Matic gets a toe on it and it bobbles around and Townsend get a lucky bounce. He ran from the half way line and Matic was with him the whole way. That's not Lindelof's fault.

I cant decide if you just really don't know what you're looking at or you're that desperate to blame him for everything its clouding your view? You go to so much trouble for a goal that didnt even count.

I think Lindelof will be out for week or two so lets see what the others can do now..

Mourinho says that he has a "proper" injury that will keep him out for a while.

And that's why its always idiotic to play through injuries, especially muscular injuries. Even more crazy that Mourinho actually praised players who try to play through them. Not brave, stupid.

We had run out of subs and it was 1-1. If anything he did the right thing staying on the pitch but someone else should have covered everything for him.

Really good performance from him, starting to gain confidence. A shame his groin looked to go near the end.

It really wasn’t, by any stretch. Average performance, topped off by a lucky decision from the assistant referee when he failed to defend like a man. Confident? He’s a sitting duck.
