Didn't we get Zlatan and Pogba without CL? Also highly rated Mkhitaryan? CL matters yes, but it's over rated imo when it comes to United. A good manager, lots of money and a good plan will attract most players. ETH is a new beginning that many footballers will believe in no matter how bleak of a picture the English media is trying to paint. Keep in mind that much of the same journos that are bombarding us with negative narratives are the same that are protecting Lingard; one of our most toxic players together with Pogba.Last time we had Champions League though
We were far worse then we should have been this season; it's not a fair reflection on the quality of the squad imo for many reasons; many of them have been fixed, manager in particular, and others are on the way (letting go of toxic players). If things go half way decent only City, Pool and Chelsea have a better squad then us. Most ambitious players should look to be better then Arsenal and Spurs next season.Sancho is English, has virtually grown up in Manchester and probably had likes of Rashford, Shaw and Maguire in his ear.
Varane has won everything there is to win in the game and needed a change of scenery. It is a bit different especially as they joined a club which had come second not seventh in the league.
If we were to sign a new midfielder from Italy I'd prefer either someone younger like Tonali who can play at the 6 well or a good playmaker like Barella. Either one + De Jong would make for a massive upgrade in ability and quality in midfield.Anybody here watch the Italian league? Milinković-Savić has had a mental season with Lazio.

SMS would be pricey and I'm not sure just how well he'd translate in the Prem.

Perfect would be a ST, RW, CM, DM, CB and RB. Antony, Frankie, Kante, Timber (CB, RB) and Nunez.
GK - not fussed
LB - An energetic, pacey attacking left back. Cucurella fits the mould, but just one example. He's also quite versatile and can fill various positions.
CB - ideally left footed, pacey, good in the air. Lower priority than other positions, so I'd be content with a young player who would be content to start on the bench initially, and ready to take their chances when our first choice are injured or out of form again with a view to becoming first choice. Salisu from Southampton looks good.
RB - complicated. Laird waiting in the wings but not ready, Williams potentially as a backup covering both flanks, Dalot and AWB both still young and have some potential, maybe, but a decison needs to be made, get rid of those the manager doesn't see potential in, bring in a quality RB, or another potential top talent like Livramento or Spence. I can see this being position being unchanged by the start of next season.
CM - Rice, Neves, De Jong, Tchouaméni, we need one of these at least. De Jong would be my preference, I love that style of player and its something United have lacked for several years, and ETH could build the midfield around him. Ideally two CMs, but I think one is likely with VdB being part of the squad, Fred and McTominay playing bit-part roles, possibly Garner in the squad, and possibly Hannibal although the latter may be used in more advanced positions. If one or two of the latter go out on loan, then maybe bring in one of the Ajax CMs or another youngster specialist DM for squad depth, with a view to phasing out McTominay the next summer.
AM - possibly the only place we're okay, with Bruno, backed up by VdB, Hannibal, Shoretire. The bigger question is whether we'll play with a number 10 most of the time, or whether we'll prefer a 6 and 2 8s.
LW - Another position we're OK in for a while. Sancho should be an important part of the new manager's plans, with Elanga and Rashford involved.
RW - We absolutely need a specialist in this position, not someone who can merely do a job there. Someone like Raphinha would be ideal but I don't think we'd get him, Antony maybe more realistic.
CF - If Ronaldo leaves we need a top number 9 worthy of leading the line for Manchester United. I fear we'll chase Kane all summer and be rejected, as we're currently a sideways/downward step from Spurs, and Kane doesn't seem to sort to jump ship for the money and he doesn't have time to wait a few years in the hope we become genuine title contenders. I reckon we'll see Bruno as a false 9 at times, perhaps with another 10/false 9 brought in too like Nkunku, and bring in another option who can play the traditional 9 role when needed. Ideally our new setup will identify a young player who can come in and provide competition immediately but has the potential to become top level, but I'm not aware of who and fear we'll end up with a short term backup option like Haller or Calvert-Lewin.
I will go and list a dream team....
Timber CB
Kante DCM
FDJ CM
Anthony RW
Nunez ST
This could let us line up...
--------------------DeGea-------------------
Dalot----Varane---Timber----Shaw
-------------Kante-----FDJ----------------
Anthony------Bruno----------Sancho
-------------------Nunez---------------------
With subs.............
-------------Henderson/???-----------
????--Maguire-Tuanzebe-Telles
----------Garner---Fred-----------------

Yes we could use some FB and a few other players. Will be a few years til we are back top but need to start strong.
De Gea-Henderson
New RB-Dalot
Varane-Lindelof
New CB-Maguire
Shaw-Telles
New DM-Mctominay
New CM-Fred
New RW-Elanga
Bruno-DVB
Sancho-Rashford
Ronaldo-New CF
This is the kind of investment we need to be making in the coming weeks. At least six. I agree completely on the positions, too.
120m and what we recoup in outgoings. Bailly, Jones, Cavani, Lingard, Pogba, Mata, Matic are all almost certainly gone. That's a lot of money going off the wage bill. Add to that whatever we receive from possible sales of AWB, Dalot, Henderson, Martial and it will be a lot more than 120m.With only £120 million to spend, an overhaul simply won’t be happening.
Only 2-3 signings will be made, as any good player, will cost at least 50 million, in todays market.
Can see Timber and a CDM coming in and that will be that.
We can forget about signing the likes of Nunez, as he will cost most of our budget alone.
De Gea-Henderson
New RB-Dalot
Varane-Lindelof
New CB-Maguire
Shaw-Telles
New DM-Mctominay
New CM-Fred
New RW-Elanga
Bruno-DVB
Sancho-Rashford
Ronaldo-New CF
Minus Dalot plus maybe Telles, this isn’t actually a bad looking team sheet.A centre back to replace Maguire/fill in for Varane.
A holding midfielder to replace Matic/McTominay.
A left forward to replace Rashford/Greenwood/Lingard/Martial.
LF Ronaldo SanchoI mean I'd like a new striker and two new full backs but we can't have everything.
Bruno DVdB
DM
Telles Varane CB Dalot
DDG
Time to wake up, from that dream now.
I don’t expect it happen, but it’s what needs to happen.
How did one player going to Madrid lead to thinking that we’d miss our targets? The fact that Tchouameni has now decided on Real Madrid (even though we werent really in for him and he would never have chose us) got me thinking that:
Declan Rice is either staying put or moving probably to Chelsea,
De Jong isnt really that interested in the new United project,
Phillips is likely staying at Leeds now,
Neves is being earmarked for Barca,
We are slowly starting to run out of options in this midfielder transfer. And ideally we need two![]()
Also this from Statsbomb's Director of Football resonated with me as its something I've often thought about myself over the last few years; that if United had allocated a month of Pogba's salary on its data science department around the time he was signed, a lot of problems could have been avoided. Nerds are relatively cheap compared to the best footballers!I believe a title challenging team can be built with players in the 30-40m range.
United need quantity as much as quality and they need to take some risks to get all the positions filled
RW or CF I suspect. We'll definitely sign one attacker but probably not more than one.
Partially because more recent stories have said we're looking for a single versatile attacking player rather than multiple attacking players. But also because unlike the post I was responding to lays out on paper, neither Ronaldo nor our new attacker will likely be content to swap in and out of the one CF spot on a 50/50 basis. Particularly given Rangnick openly stated that Ronaldo doesn't want to play as a CF. So I suspect we'll see them play together quite a bit as well, taking up two of the three attacking spots rather than just one between them.
I also wouldn't be overly surprised to see Bruno starting from a nominal wide position occassionaly either, with VDB as the #10.
Minus Dalot plus maybe Telles, this isn’t actually a bad looking team sheet.
Hopefully Ten Hag can get a tune out of a refreshed & confident Van Der B, coupled with at least 4-5 new signings, I think we should start heading in the right direction.
