Other than united games, of which there is plenty to choose from, this one was a good watch

Maybe Argentina vs. France from last year's World Cup?

Things to consider

- You don't want to show them something old as shit... At the very least it needs to be in HD... But the more recent the better I'd say.

- Need a game with easy to explain stakes and it doesn't get much easier then a World Cup knockout game

- Want a fairly even game that goes back and forth. One team dominating could seem boring

- Need lots of goals too, and quality goals as well

- the appearance of someone iconic like Messi or Ronaldo won't hurt.

So when you consider all this, France vs. Argentina is a strong contender.

I think non football fans would get invested in an International game faster than a club game. Basing this off nothing but guesswork, I assume its easier to root for Ghana than it would be for Everton.

Think the Spain 4:3 Yugoslavia match from Euro 2000 would be a good shout, always stands out in my head when thinking about international football. Also the Turkey 3:2 Czech Republic from Euro 2004. Euros are usually great entertainment generally.

Definite increase in kits and other team merchandise. Mainly from the big 6 PL clubs, Munich & Dortmund, PSG, Real, and Barcelona. The EPL and Bundesliga are on TV every Saturday and Sunday morning now, and the CL and EL every time they’re on as well, so exposure is up.

I’ve actually only taught 2 other United fans, and they were AP kids so didn’t need any extra credit  Although I think their intelligence shows in their team choice.

There would be many more but what comes to mind immediately. So a bit of a recency bias(and obviously biased towards Liverpool cause I watch mostly Liverpool matches)

Liverpool-Dortmund Europa Quarters (4-3)
Liverpool - Barca CL Semis (4-3)
Barca-PSG CL pre-Quarters (6-5)
United - PSG CL pre-Quarters (3-3)
Liverpool - Norwich (5-4) PL
Leicester - Watford Championship Play off Semis (3-2)

Have gone for maximum drama towards the end of the game.

I’m sure there are loads, but the first recent one that comes to mind is Tottenham Vs Man City 3-4 in the champions league quarters last season. What a game it was

One that hasn't been mentioned yet is when we (Sweden) came back from 0-4 down away against reigning champions Germany in the World Cup qualifiers 2012. Game ended 4-4.

And to get them hating football again afterwards:
Tottenham vs Chelsea (Spurs being Spurs)
Chelsea vs Barcelona (Øvrebø)

Exactly this! Everything I wanted to say in the OP but was unable to articulate!

Question: is the 1999 Treble too old, according to your HD clause?

Also, if I show them the CL final, does the quality of the goals outweigh the number of goals?

The unstoppable force vs the immovable object. Also why are you still friends with someone who doesn't like football.

From a German perspective:

Real 3-4 Schalke
Dortmund 3-2 Malaga
Leverkusen 4-4 Roma
Bayern 2-1 Dortmund (CL final)

It would definitely have to be a World Cup match since a neutral will apply more importance to whether the USA can beat England for example, rather than who can win a match involving two football clubs they're vaguely aware of.

I'd pick Netherlands v Portugal from the 2006 World Cup because if they don't like the football they might appreciate the violence and drama.

Or maybe Brazil 1-7 Germany in order to witness a complete humiliation on the grandest stage in front of a home crowd.

Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Barcelona in like 09/10 at the Emirates. The first half was some of the best stuff Barcelona ever played and Almunia was unbelievable in keeping the score down. Xavi put on a masterclass that night. Wonderful game overall but the first half alone would be enough to convert anyone.

I would say the 99 Treble is too old... I mean, if someone wanted to get me into Basketball, then showed me a game from 20 years ago, i'd just think that Basketball can't be very good these days if they're having to go back 20 years to show me something!

I wouldn't say quality outweighs quantity, but you ideally want a good mixture of both.

The United-Arsenal games at the peak of the Fergie Wenger era. Sensational stuff.

El Clasico games Mourinho vs Pep. For pure drama and breathtaking football.

Messi 4 Arsenal 1. The only game I remember being so vividly blown away by a player.

This hands down. Everybody I spoke to (United/Madrid fans and non-football chaps) said they hoped it would go on forever. So much quality on the pitch, too. World-class game played by world-class players at their peak.

United v Arsenal 98/99 FA Cup. Doesn't get any more sensational, intense or dramatic.

Just off the top of my head, mainly English matches, can't think of too many euro matches or WC matches as my minds a bit blank this morning.

Spurs 3-4 City - FA Cup 2004
Spurs 4-5 Arsenal - PL 2004
United 4-3 City - PL 2009
Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle PL 1997
City 4-3 Spurs CL 2019

It was entertaining, but wasn’t quite as epic or intense as the scoreline suggests since Real were never really in any trouble once they scored.
